    New look for Google Messages?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 07:20 PM PDT

    Hi all

I noticed something interesting recently that I wanted to share.

While my girlfriend was showing me her phone, I noticed that her version of Google Messages had a new colour scheme, both for the contact icons and the message colours themselves.

This confused me as I am running the beta version of the app (6.5.069) while she is running the stable version (6.3.054). I tried doing some research online but nobody seems to have noticed or posted about a new design refresh recently.

Here are some screenshots for comparison:

Here is also the version information from APK Analyzer for those interested

I did some more digging and was even more confused to find that 6.3.054 is not even the newest version, according to APKMirror (the newest non-beta being 6.4.043). However, her phone reports having the latest version of Messages with no updates available. I am running a Galaxy S10e (Android 10) and she is running a S8 (Android 9), but I don't think that is relevant here, as all versions of the app are listed as being compatible with Android 5+ on APKMirror.

I'm guessing this is some kind of A/B feature flag based testing, because I would have expected the beta versions of the app to get these kind of changes first. Google must have quite a complex rollout system set up for Messages, where certain devices aren't even getting the latest versions for whatever reason, but are still getting feature flags toggled on and off.

I also noticed, in the APK Analyzer screenshots, that my version is listed as Banyan while hers is listed as NoseFlute2. I'm not sure if these are just codenames for different versions, or they could be different variants of the app with different features. I couldn't find any references to these in relation to the app online either.

Anyways, I love the new look personally and can't wait to get it on my phone. Let me know if you've seen this new look as well!

EDIT: Looks like it isn't a new look after all, just a bug. Bummer 😕

Ross Young on Twitter: The reason the Pixel 4a can be $349 with an AMOLED is that it is rigid rather than flexible which is less than 1/3 the cost. Smart move by Google, cache of OLED at a much lower price. Apple resisted rigid due to dual source desire and smaller chin...

Samsung did optimize the Exynos 990 on the Note 20 series?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 06:25 PM PDT

    https://youtu.be/CrPqHKpDmh4

So in the video, after 30 minutes of playing Arena of Valor, the SoC was relatively cool (below 40C) on the front and the back.

In another game, PUBG, Exynos 990 kept a stable framerate of 40fps at the max setting it supports at the moment (HDR + 40fps), and 60fps with very few drops in the lowest setting.

Hmmm, seems like Samsung really tried to optimize the Exynos 990 on the Note series... Great! At least people in Europe don't need to worry about what SoC is on the phone anymore.

G8 Power BROKEN on Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile (Android 10 from Google Fi)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 02:17 PM PDT

Google Fi's G8 Power is not a truly "unlocked" phone. There have been many reports of failure to connect to mobile data on Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile. They will be able to make calls and texts, but not browse the web.

The problem is not hardware related. It is because the Google Fi ROM firmware (the Google Fi themed version of Android 10) has somehow locked the APN settings to only use Google Fi SIM cards.

The only way to fix this problem is to unlock the bootloader, root the phone, and load the Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile ROM. This is a complicated procedure that voids your Motorola Warranty and should not be required to gain basic functionality of the phone.

What's more insidious is that Google Fi refuses to acknowledge the problem. They offered the G-Power with a $100 discount if you use Google Fi for 30 days. By that point, the 15-day buyer's remorse period is over, and you are stuck with a phone that only gets mobile data on the Google Fi network.

THIS IS A LOCKED PHONE. Do NOT buy it if you intend to take it to another carrier at any point in the future. Caveat Emptor.

Hey Reddit, I'm back to answer your questions about the Note20/Note20 Ultra

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 01:01 PM PDT

Due to how Reddit works I decided to make a new post.

    u/specialpredator u/Feisty_Camel

"1-Did you feel any difference between the glass back of the ultra and the glastic one on regular one?

2-How noticable is the latency difference between the 2 spens?"

1-Yes there's a noticeable difference, it feels cheaper but I wouldn't mind if it came with the same screen as the Ultra, and perhaps better cameras but as is stands the base Note 20 is a waste of money

2- It's very noticeable in a side by side, I made a video to show it better S Pen Part Jump to 2:12 for a side by side with the Note 10 and Note 20 Ultra.

It feels much more responsive because of the 120hz screen, without that they are similar so yet another reason to avoid the base model

    u/cliffr39

"Outside of the 120hz refresh rate, do you see the Ultra being worth the higher cost?"

Yes, if you have your eyes set on buying one of them, the Ultra is by far the best option, the regular version has far too many compromises to justify the $1000 price tag. Honestly, it's hard to justify $1300 in a phone too but at least you'll own a flagship, spending $1000 on what's basically a mid-range is crazy

    u/CEO_16

"How smooth is that pen? I could literally see the difference in the MKBHD video"

it's really smooth, the low latency + the high refresh rate really makes writing feel natural, but like I said before only happens on the Ultra, the base model is similar to the Note10

    u/SeaScraper

"what is the Linux kernel version in Note 20? Is it 4.19 or the newer 5.4?"

    it was 4.19

    u/DJangled
    u/Feisty_Camel

"Might be difficult for you unless you have other comparable devices on hand, but how's the camera quality? Any improvement over the S20 Ultra, especially in autofocus and zoom quality? S20 Ultra's zoom quality seemed to suffer from degradation due to over sharpening, even at 10x, so it would be interesting to see if Samsung's made any adjustments."

There are improvements on both the autofocus and zoom quality check here for the auto focus and zoom comparison just having fast and reliable autofocus makes it a huge improvement over the S20 Ultra even thought they have the same cameras apart from the telephoto, doesn't matter how good the camera is if everything is out of focus and the camera keeps constantly focus hunting which is my biggest gripe with my S20U.

I feel like it's over-smoothing above over-sharpening, everything's just all mushy, even in the example in my video you can see that in the photo taken with the S20U the AKG logo is just a mushy mess while the Note 20 Ultra retains some of the detail. So in the camera department it's clearly an upgrade

    u/tiradium

"If you have One UI 2.1 device what is different/better in OneUI 2.5?"

Yes, I do. There's more options in the camera, like 21:9 and the ability to record at 24fps now. ProMode is also improved but still limited to the main camera for no reason + you can now use Dex Mode wireless on compatible TVs

    u/Exia-118

"Have they improved the haptic feedback?"

I have the S20 Ultra and it just feels the same to me

Samsung is marketing the new Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with the Note 20 and they have it on display for people to try.

It takes a couple minutes to start each game but once it starts it runs very well, there's barely any input lag. I tried Shadow of the Tomb Raider and it was buttery smooth in cutscenes but once you start playing it dips a lot, during gameplay it was like 40-60fps

I tried Dirt Rally 2, and it run very well as well but since it's much more fast paced than Tomb Raider, the low bitrate artifacts were very noticeable, it felt just like watching a Twitch stream, not terrible but a bit distracting at times.

you can watch the gameplay here

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, Drew
