Firefox Preview has been merged into Firefox Nightly Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:08 PM PDT Hi, I noticed today the following message after updating FF Preview on my device. It looks like Firefox Preview has become Firefox Nightly, which seems to be the path to make the new GeckoView developments part of the main Firefox apps. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
.HEIC image format is awkwardly implemented on Android. Posted: 02 Jul 2020 03:09 PM PDT If you dont know what .HEIC is, its essentially the JPEG replacement, it is able to more efficiently compress images, so smaller sizes with the same quality, and offers stuff like 16 bit colors. It was added to Android and Apple a couple years back. Most phones that have this have it disabled by default because of the issue below. Now that sounds great and all, but the downside is adoption. Not every device can handle HEIC and more importantly, not every image service or website lets you upload HEIC. So you have to either stop using it and go back to the worse, but more popular JPEG when taking a photo or convert the HEIC to JPEG, which can be done with apps or websites and then upload the converted JPEG. This extra step can be annoying and tedious. So whats the solution? An option to automatically convert HEIC to JPEG when sharing the file. That way the original stays on your device, taking up a fraction of the size, but you're able to share it freely. And while I am not a fan of Apple, this exact solution is something they implemented when Apple brought HEIC to their devices in 2017, and it clearly has been working well for their users. So Google, how about adding HEIC conversion in a future update? [link] [comments]

SOLVED: Galaxy Smart Watches disconnecting from Android 9+ Phones Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:21 AM PDT I replaced my S8 Active with a Blackview Bv9900 Pro which runs on Android 9. As soon as I switched, I synced up my smartwatch (Gear S3 Classic) and downloaded the associated apps. Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Accessory Service, and Gear S Plugin. I went through the setup process and all was well for about an hour. My watch said it was disconnected and could not be reconnected. Something about the Bluetooth connection was bugging out, saying it was connected when it wasn't, and really wouldn't work until I redid the whole setup process. After looking it up, this seems to be a widespread problem on a lot of different phones using Android 9+. After setting the watch up and everything is still working, I noticed this error happens only after I let the phone be idle/"black screened" for about 30 minutes. If I kept using the phone/kept it "awake", I wouldn't lose the original connection. I tried everything I read online, checking/disabling battery optimization settings, turning off "intelligent" power saving, background usage permissions etc. No luck. I tested and knew both of the device's Bluetooth were working correctly and it had to be software related. Something to do with leaving the phone idle after some time and likely some terribly made battery saver junk. After some digging, I found there's a weird hidden System App called DuraSpeed. When I searched for it on the phone, I could only see the app info and that was it. I downloaded an app called Solid Explorer File Manager. I went to Apps --> System Apps --> DuraSpeed and tapped LAUNCH. Once here you actually open the app. As soon as I turned it OFF, my Gear S3 immediately reconnected, the Gear S Plugin popped up saying it was booting, and my notifications all started working perfectly and have been since! If you're having trouble with your smartwatch or app notifications give this a try. Hopefully this helps others using Android 9+ TLDR: Built-in app called DuraSpeed is a dick. Download Solid Explorer File Manager on Play Store. Go to Apps --> System Apps --> DuraSpeed and tap LAUNCH. Once here you actually open the app. turn it OFF [link] [comments]

No phones releasing in 18:9 aspect ratio anymore? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:49 AM PDT I don't like the new 20:9 aspect ratio, im ok with all screen 18:9 phones, the last great phone with 18:9 I can think of is the pixel 3 but it has big bezels, I wish there was a new phone with 18:9 but bezelless display, but all Android companies seem to following the same trend and this year the standard is 20:9, maybe next year it will be 21:9, the pixel 5 seems interesting, but I would be it will be 20:9, if it was even 19:9 and was bezelless I may buy it. Android permissions feature needs to be revamped from the scratch. Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:32 AM PDT Today I installed a game on my phone. I was occupied with work and thought I'd play the game later on so didn't even open the game. Couple of minutes later I saw a notification from this game about buying coins or some shit. Why is this app pushing me notifications when I didn't open/use the app even once, let alone granting permission to show me notifications? Same thing goes for internet access to the apps. Why does every app have access to internet by default? The user should decide whether he wants to let the app connect to internet or not. I don't want my clock, calculator, keyboard apps get connected to internet. By default, notifications and internet access should be off for every app. Right now, when you use an app for the first time, you get prompted for giving/denying for several permissions like access to storage, location, camera etc. Both pushing notifications and internet access permissions should be asked the same way.
