Any issue using Mi Box S with external usb drive?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 06:51 AM PDT

I run fire tv, with a local NAS for media at home. Need something for use in a camper. Thought about a Mi Box S with a 128gb flash drive with some media files on it. Any reason that wouldn't work? Can I remove the usb drive formatted as internal storage and copy files from a pc over to it? Will this setup allow you to download netflix content to the expanded storage drive?

    Hi all,

We use the USB drive as storage, but is there a method to use Google Drive? So I want to install apps to Google Drive.

Q+/Q Plus MBox, quick work around for shutting down issue I experienced

Q+/Q Plus MBox, quick work around for shutting down issue I experienced

Posting this here as it took me a while to figure it out and if there's even one other person out there in digispace with the same problem who finds my work around useful I'll be glad to have saved someone else from the hassle. If anyone knows a better solution please do let me know.

(I think it's an 'android tv' but not certain could just be a well skinned android smart tv box? - large panel interface, supports chromecast etc - anyway I appreciate my usage case is unusual but I'm keen to leave this solution somewhere in the hope of helping someone else with a similar problem one day).

Problem:Unlike my previous unit Q plus switches itself off every time the device connected to it by HDMI goes off, killing my servers. I literally wanted to use the box with the TV off most of the time (I've described my usage case below).

The Device I'm using Q+ Android TV box

    Solution:

I figured the problem was some sort of HDMI CEC control picking up the tv being switched off and I had tried everything....I couldn't find any such option in the menu to disable. I used dev settings to set the box to stay awake, I set the screensaver not to come on....all to no avail. Then thinking outside the box I decided that if my suspicion about a signal being sent along the HDMI cable to shut down the unit were correct then I might not need a setting...

So I set everything up, tested it all, then, happy, disconnected the HDMI cable from the back of the unit.

BINGO - it stayed on, shutdown problem now solved my servers have now been up for two days.

    ------------------

In case of interest/usefulness to others I detail my usage case for the box:

    Use case:

I was using this android 'tv' box largely to run a number of servers with my main TV streaming needs being handled by other streaming devices. I installed Servers Ultimate Pro (which I own, but there's a free version if anyone is interested), ttorrent and teamviewer host. The box is connected to a 4TB external hard disk.

    My setup uses:

    1. Teamviewer Host (in case something goes wrong and i need to play with the server settings remotely or DDNS breaks, I can remote desktop in. I'm trying to get static IP from my ISP).
    2. DDNS update server (so I don't need to change all my config every time my ISP changes my IP address).
    3. OpenVPN server - so I can tunnel via my home network when on insecure connections I have two both a TAP and a TUN, in case I need to interact with devices on my network as if on the network vs just needing to tunnel through to the internet.
    4. WebDAV server (internal and external) over https - as secure cloud storage when I don't want to use an external solution (sensitive documents or stuff I want to set to download to my cloud for later use) (Total Commander is good for accessing this from android, you can even access via any old web browser).
    5. Samba (SMB) network file share - For accessing the same files a bit more easily when within my home network (SAMBA also works when I use the TAP VPN server remotely although I don't do that unless I need to due to broadcast packets etc - most of the time I'll use TUN unless I specifically need to access my local network devices).
    6. DNLA Server - media streaming over the local network (and occasionally over TAP VPN).
    7. tTorrent - which has the https web interface connected and I use Transdrone app on my phone to manage downloads remotely (I should add legal stuff I don't condone piracy. Plenty of legal content to download out there though).
    8. VPN Client - this one is an external service - I'm not going to name the brand I went for but sometimes it's useful to be able to route the box's internet connection elsewhere (and if I do that I can check the new IP address by connecting in again via teamviewer host, due to hassle I rarely do this.

Anyway that's the setup the restart issue was ruining, ironically I rarely use this device for streaming/chromecast - although it is capable - as I have fireTV units for that.

Anyway I really hope this helps someone else frustrated at this box's well intentioned habit of switching itself off - which is a real pain when you're trying to do something like this.

I appreciate the topic may be a bit unusual here but who knows maybe some in your community may wish to try something similar. Hoping it is adequately on topic/interesting/useful enough to be ok by the mod team.

Android 8 Oreo Has Bricked My Apps

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:41 PM PDT

My 2015 Sony Android TV was updated to 8 last week, and in the process has completely broken some apps including Kodi, and Nova Video Player!

I've been using Kodi and Nova for 3 years now on my TV to play my movies that are stored on my External HD that's connected to the back of my TV. It has worked flawlessly, until the night Sony updated my TV!

With Kodi the problem is that the movies are all showing up on the Kodi 'Movie' section, and they are also showing up in the 'files' section, so i know Kodi is loading the movies fine. But when clicking into a movie to play it, nothing happens. No error message, nothing. It just doesn't play! I have uninstalled Kodi several times now, i even factory reset my TV! But nope, still get the issue EVERY SINGLE TIME. It's frustrating the shit outta me.

So i figured what the hell, i'll use Nova Video Player instead (that has also worked for me over the years with no issues). But NOPE. That no longer works properly now either! However, the issue is different with Nova. Nova will play my movies just fine. Wihich is great. But, everytime i load Nova, it re-adds all my movies! It never used to do that prior to this new TV 'upgrade' (not much of an upgrade lol). I have over 500 movies, so it takes 20 minutes to load them all. Pretty annoying having to do that every night!

What could be the problem? I've tried almost everything. My movies do play, since Nova plays them, so that's not the issue.

    Any ideas?

    Android box in canada

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:54 AM PDT

I'm looking to find a box that will stream 4k and dolby digital, truehd as well as the ability to cast from mobile devices and utilize standard music apps like Spotify, plex..etc. While its welcomed, I already have multiple home theaters so it doesn't really need any other functionality as I just want 2 for a couple bedrooms. I've been killing myself looking for a low priced option and so far mi box s seems like it could do it but Im torn as all these things have so many reviews of inadequacies, not to mention I dont know where I can trust to purchase them as I've never used any of the sites they seem to be sold on. Can anyone provide some recommendations or insight on which one or where to buy? Thanks 😊

Sony Firmware update for KDL-W80C 6.827

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:01 AM PDT

Hello all. Is there someone that have installed this update for 2015 Sony Bravia TVs? It is for Asia-Pacific region and bring Android tv to Oreo. I would like to know if there is some bug and if the user experience is somewhat better than before or is becoming worst. I have a kdl-50w808c sold in Europe and I hope this update will be soon available to me too. Thanks in advance.

Transfer large files from Mac to Shield over network?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:36 AM PDT

I currently have the newest shield TV pro and I have an external drive to play my media with Kodi. I'd like to keep my HDD plugged into my shield and just transfer media to my shield over WiFi (so I don't have to play my media using a server). I haven't been able to find my shield in the normal network settings in my Mac. What steps should I take to achieve this? Thanks!!
