Months in the making, my app for Curated and filterable Android games and reviews based on my 100+ months of posting here on the Sub is now live (+ a 5 x $15 Google Play Gift Card Giveaway)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:54 PM PDT

Thanks to everyone who helped beta test the app (over 100 people from r/AndroidGaming <3), MiniReview, the app I've been working on with a fellow Redditor for over a year, is now finally live on Google Play.

I strongly believe there should be a better way to discover great mobile games, and that's why we've built MiniReview, taking heavy inspiration from my posts here on the sub over the years.

    Hope you'll enjoy it :)

    Download MiniReview: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=minireview.best.android.games.reviews

Launch Giveaway Celebration: Leave a comment below and we'll draw 5 random comments (from this post/the post in r/MiniReview) in 48 hours - each will get a $15 US Google Play Gift Card.

    ________

Now, if you're interested in learning a bit more about MiniReview and what our plans are for the future, read on below.

    What and why?

We believe we all deserve a better way to find mobile games! Because frankly, we're fed up with the status quo of mobile games discovery.

So our mission is simple; to help you discover actual great mobile games - not just the ones that earn the most money! We want to make games discovery fun, not a dreadful process.

With MiniReview, we wanted to create a home for truly passionate mobile gamers. In many ways, it's the app we've always wished existed, and now it's finally here. It's a place by gamers for gamers, a place where mobile games are properly dissected, analyzed, and organized

So how can you use MiniReview then?

You can search, sort, and filter your way to exactly the types of games you're interested in. And once you've found one that looks interesting, you can browse our custom screenshots, videos, text review, and manually collected datapoints to figure out if you want to take it for a spin.

    In addition, you can also:

    • Get notified when new reviews matching your favorite game genres are added to MiniReview
    • Rate games and see what others think about 'em
    • Add games to your favorites' list and share it with your friends and family
    • Participate in promotions and giveaways (we hope to do a lot of these in the future - especially featuring small-to-medium sized devs)

    THE FUTURE: A MiniReview Website?

While we are initially launching MiniReview as an Android app, we're already working on a much-improved version of the platform, which will eventually live on minireview.io.

The website will have additional features and is a complete redesign of the platform. It will eventually replace the app (we might be able to "wrap" the website into an app if there's demand for that).

The benefits of a website version / additional features:

    • Accessible anywhere (PC, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS)
    • A much more interesting "feed" with different segments (examples: Last Added Reviews, Best of the Week, User Favorites etc.)
    • Ability to suggest games that should be added to MiniReview through an "Add a Game" button
    • Room for iOS games in addition to Android games
    • Game pages for games that don't yet have a review yet. There's a limit to how many games can be reviewed per week, but with the addition of game pages without reviews, it's possible to use the powerful filters on MiniReview to still find these games. When we add games that don't yet have a review, we still spend time collecting manual datapoints (this is what powers the filters) and custom screenshots.
    • Room for Editorial "blog-like" posts to highlight e.g. "best Winter games of 2020" etc.
    • Share a link with your favorite games without forcing the person you're sending the link to to download an app to view the games
    • A solid foundation for building additional social features in the future

    Want to Support us?

    • Go check out the app and leave an honest rating on Google Play
    • Join us at r/MiniReview
    • Tell you friends about MiniReview <3
    • If you're interested in reviewing games, either through text or video, be sure to reach out.
    • To expand our network of developers - do you know any we should say hi to? Ask them to email us at contact@minireview.io

How do you stream to TV?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 05:28 AM PDT

I know most people just use their phone display. I'm interested in streaming to TV so I can play Tetris 1v1 (Tetris and Dr. Mario on SNES). My phone does not support usbc to hdmi and I'm concerned with possible lag on any wireless options. I may upgrade my phone this year so that's something I may keep in mind when shopping around (it's annoying even the pixel phones don't offer video through usbc).

So do you stream to TV? What method(s) are you using and how does it work out?

xbox one controller vs the flydigi wee 2T

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:28 AM PDT

Hello, I am new to android gaming. I am looking for a controller for Kartrider rush plus. I know that the Xbox one does not have a native mapping app. Since Kartrider does not have controller support, will I have problem using the Xbox one controller? I like the landscape layout of the flydigi, but my note 10 lite has a bottom firing speaker and I am worried it is going to get muffled with the flydigi. Input lag is another concern. Is it the Xbox + OTG my best option?

    best gamepads for kids

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:38 AM PDT

My daughter got a taste for retro games but playing the action games (she loves TLoZ and Kirby's style) become too difficult in cellphone emulators for her as my Xbox one controller is too big for her, I need a smaller gamepad, she can play perfectly on my old Game Boy SP and I think she could do at least with a SNES size controller, but the ones I have seen are either too expensive (more than an xbox one controller) or I just don't know if it's a brand I can trust to last.

TL:DR kid have small hands and a taste for retro games emulators, need a controller to help her.

Games like Castle of the Winds

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 12:27 PM PDT

Back in the day, I used to love playing Castle of the Winds. Yesterday, my younger son (13) described the kind of game he was looking for and it sounded to me like Castle of the Winds. So I grabbed my copy of the game, loaded it on his PC, and got very sad as I realized that the old 16 bit Windows 3.1 game won't run on 64 bit Windows 10.

Until I figure out a way to get past this obstacle, I was wondering if there was anything like Castle of the Winds for Android. For those who have never played this game, it's an old school turn based RPG. You go into a dungeon (or cave), go down through various levels (which randomly generate your first time through), and fight various monsters. The monsters drop gold and/or items. You take those back to town where you can sell the items you don't need to get more gold or use your money to buy more items.

The basic types of items were limited, but what helped vary them was "enchantments" put on the items. For example, there might be two Long Swords, but one might be normal while the other was enchanted against giants. This would cost more, but would do more damage if you were facing a giant. (This obviously led to strategies as to which item was best.)

You also could cast spells which would deplete your Mana. This would auto-refill over time or if you slept. You could also send various attributes at the start of the game (strength, intelligence, dexterity, constitution) and raise them with special potions or by leveling up.

It also had an ongoing story. You weren't just going into a dungeon and getting treasure just to get treasure. You were trying to find out who murdered your parents and, later, trying to stop Sutrur from destroying the world.

So, are there any games like this for Android?

[Request] Looking for a game like Vector that isn't Vector 2

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:51 AM PDT

I really enjoyed playing Vector. I've played through it a couple times. So I was expecting to try Vector 2, but I really really don't like it. I don't like the changes they made to the formula of not being able to restart levels, and having to keep unlocking upgrades and everything.
