| Posted: 16 Apr 2020 03:21 PM PDT Hey guys, a couple of months ago, I started to slowly switch away as much as possible from Google. Despite starting to use Duckduckgo for example, I also tried out any other things, to get rid of that company. That's where I found F-Droid. I like it very much and saw that almost every three years somebody is starting a "Best of F-Droid" at this channel. And that is exactly what I want to do right now. Here is my "Best of F-Droid 2020" list and please feel free to comment and add anything you like! (Please note: I don't get paid from anyone for this and I don't want to say that any apps not present on the list are bad or worse than those apps. I basically just want to create the list to see, if you guys also can recommend anything for me.) (Please also note: I will probably crosspost it at r/privacy and r/Android). F-Droid https://f-droid.org/ The app store which only has FOSS apps. Nice and easy overlay, auto updates for apps, screenshots. Aurora Store https://f-droid.org/app/com.aurora.store A Google Play Store App, which let's you use the store without an account. Has an integrated tracking radar which shows the trackers within the apps. DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser https://f-droid.org/app/com.duckduckgo.mobile.android A browser which automatically blocks third party cookies and trackers. Let's you create shortcuts at the homescreen. Can not recommend it enough. Tor Browser https://f-droid.org/app/org.torproject.torbrowser The Tor browser for android. I think I don't need to explain this one. NewPipe https://f-droid.org/app/org.schabi.newpipe Basically YouTube, useable without an account and with an integrated download function. Best version I have seen yet. SlimSocial https://f-droid.org/app/it.rignanese.leo.slimfacebook App for Facebook but without all them trackers. No notifications thou. Slide https://f-droid.org/app/me.ccrama.redditslide App for reddit but also without any trackers. Telegram https://f-droid.org/app/org.telegram.messenger Well I guess, I don't have to explain this one. OsmAnd+ https://f-droid.org/app/net.osmand.plus Openstreetmaps navigation and offline files. Comparable to Maps.me but also no trackers (Maps.me has 18 trackers right now). A lot to set up first but it works well afterwards. FairMail https://f-droid.org/app/eu.faircode.email Mail client which let's you do, what ever you dream of. It won't win the beauty award but has everything you need. Music https://f-droid.org/app/com.maxfour.music Nice and beautiful music player. Everything you need. VLC https://f-droid.org/app/org.videolan.vlc No explanation needed. AnySoftKeyBoard https://f-droid.org/app/com.menny.android.anysoftkeyboard Open Source solution. Works well after setting everything up. Classyshark3xodus https://f-droid.org/app/com.oF2pks.classyshark3xodus Scans any app you like on your mobile phone for any trackers. Blokada v4 https://f-droid.org/app/org.blokada.alarm Ad and track blocker. Has an DNS function and a paid tunnel version. Works well but often stops. OpenVPN for android https://f-droid.org/app/de.blinkt.openvpn VPN without root access Orbot https://f-droid.org/app/org.torproject.android Let's you use Tor on android FitoTrack https://f-droid.org/app/de.tadris.fitness Fitness tracker without any hidden third party trackers. SuperfreezZ App stopper https://f-droid.org/app/superfreeze.tool.android Let's you stop any apps in the background to enhance batterie life. Torchie https://f-droid.org/app/in.blogspot.anselmbros.torchie Easy access to flashlight via volume buttons. What do you think about the list and what would you add? [link] [comments] | ||

| How often do you upgrade your phone, and why? Posted: 17 Apr 2020 02:15 AM PDT I always upgrade my phone once a year. I love tech, and I always love to have the best thing my budget can afford. I've had these flagships on the past few years: iPhone 3GS, 4, 5, 5S, 6, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 6P, Mate 10, LG G3, Note 2, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S10+ (returned it, slow fingerprint scanner), Mate 20 Pro (returned it for the green screen), iPhone 11 and X (returned it because iOS is not for me [no comma on the keybord, can't accept alarms like Android, can't double tap and drag/slide for zooming in with one finger, can't set default apps, no good file management...], Pixel 2 XL (very happy with the phone), Pixel 3XL (almost happy with the phone but that notch....and also there was a bug where the first seconds of any 4K video recording there was severe stuttering. It happened to a lot of people). And now I have the OnePlus 7 Pro that I bought last year. For the first time in my life I'm considering not upgrading this year (because the phone works so good) but because of this reason I have some concerns: -I'm a power user and my battery is already degraded to aroung 80% (and that's considering that OnePlus changed my battery on an RMA some months ago). Before it lasted me like 5 hours and a little more, now 4 hours and half (I use 100% screen brightness almost all the time, and I don't have my phone static staring at a WhatsApp conversation, my minutes of SOT are minutes where I load websites or do any other thing that requires a lot of power, my SOT numbers are similar to MKBHD) -Reselling value. I always sell the phone for around 200-300€ less than what I bought it for, and then I add around 300€ for the new phone, so for around 500-600€ I have a new phone every year. But this year, If I keep the OP7 Pro it's reselling value will fall, and I dont know if it's worth it, because battery is going to be bad too... I would love to buy the new Fold 2, but It's going to be so expensive so now I'm considering the OP8Pro, the S20 and the P40 Pro. My main reason for upgrade is the camera and the screen refresh rate. And also the battery [link] [comments] | ||

| Discussion: How do you break Qualcomm's monopoly? Posted: 16 Apr 2020 07:46 AM PDT I see a lot of people here Qualcomm but when it comes to voting with their wallet, they demand QC. Samsung S20 is a recent example. Qualcomms abuse of their patents mean Samsung is forced to use SD in the states while they can use Exynos in Europe. But for some reason, Exynos people are demanding S20 use QC in Europe, further cementing their market position. [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 16 Apr 2020 07:45 PM PDT How important are the ring Slider on phones like the iPhones and OnePlus phones? YouTubers are always saying things such as " More companies should adopt this* To me personally, my phone is constantly on Vibrate and any notification will also go through my smart watch, thus eliminating the need to change it from vibrate to anything [link] [comments] |
