4 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 146)

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 12:02 AM PDT

Welcome back mah dudes/dudettes, hope you're having a great weekend :) Time for another weekly recommendation based on the mobile games I played last week.

This time, including an awesome new Tower Defense game that really takes a new unique twist on the genre, a good old "Toss" game not too unlike Burrito Bison, an open-world twin-stick RPG with a perfect monetization, and a horrible Game of Thrones game - who would've thought, eh? :p

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 145 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Divine Legends [Game Size: 237 MB] (free)

Genre: Tower Defense / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Divine Legends offers a unique new twist on the Tower Defense genre through multiple game-modes that have us take control of a main hero in addition to the usual arsenal of towers that we select before a level starts.

During combat, we can place towers on the map as usual, but the main hero is used to carve the path on which the creatures are going to walk - essentially allowing us to build the level itself. This goes for every game-mode, and adds a nice additional strategic layer to the game.

The game has a ton of singleplayer content, and progression happens through unlocking new towers and upgrading existing ones by getting enough tower cards from chests that we earn for free and can buy more of for premium currency. This does add a pay-to-progress-faster element to the game, but doesn't ruin the gameplay experience since the game isn't PvP-oriented.

There's a lot more to this game and I had a lot of fun playing it, so if you're looking for a game with a new take on the TD genre, this is definitely one to check out.

Rocky Rampage [Game Size: 267 MB] (free)

    Genre: Adventure / "Toss"-game / Casual - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Rocky Rampage is a fun and polished new side-scrolling "toss" game in the vein of Burrito Bison, Learn to Fly and similar old Flash browser games.

The goal is to get as far into the world as possible by first perfectly timing our launch for maximum forward momentum, and then strategically jumping as often as we can so we can hit boosters and avoid enemy traps slowing us down.

The graphics look great, progression is nicely paced, and monetizing through incentivized ads and unnecessary iAPs for coin-doublers, cosmetics, and consumables, the game is easily enjoyable as a free player.

YouTube First Impressions / Review: Here

Throne Quest [Total Game Size: 71 MB] (free / $3)

    Genre: RPG / Open-world / Action / Twin-stick - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Throne Quest is an indie RPG with a huge open world, over 150 items and 90 monsters, retro 8-bit graphics, and twin-stick shooter-inspired action combat.

The game has us explore not only dungeons and the world, but also the game mechanics and items themselves, as there's almost no text in the game whatsoever. For some, this might be appealing, but I found it a bit confusing for the first hour of gameplay.

The core gameplay loop has us leave town to fight monsters and explore dungeons, collect loot, equip gear, sell the loot we don't want, and then repeat. The gameplay is fun, but I personally would have liked more skills and a stat progression system.

The game isn't bad though, and it offers a unique experience that is worth checking out if you're a fan of retro-looking RPGs with simple monetization systems. On Android, there's a free trial version, with the full version unlocking for $3, which is also the price of the game on iOS.

    Unfortunately no controller support.

Game of Thrones Beyond the Wall [Total Game Size: 1.34 GB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / Hero-collector / Gacha / Strategy - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Game of Thrones Beyond the Wall is a strategy team-based hero RPG with turn-based combat and many different game-modes.

Unfortunately, the monetization is horrible, with low pull-rates in the gacha mechanic, an energy system limiting our time with the game, and there's nothing exciting about the combat itself either.

The graphics aren't spectacular, there are no voice-overs for quests and cut-scenes despite being a Game of Thrones game, the animations are mediocre at best, and the game feels a bit like a rushed cash-grab. Yes, I really didn't like this game.

You've been warned - I don't think this game is worth playing.

    [Request] ARPG with PvP

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:56 AM PDT

I played a lot of Eternium, Anima, and finished Exiled Kingdoms. I enjoy PvP as a test of skill, rather than the mundane endgame grinding. Does anyone recommend an ARPG similar to these games but that also have PvP?

    Thanks!

[REQUEST] Co-op online game with progression

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 03:58 AM PDT

Hello! We are a group of 5-6 friends (we aren't always connected at the same time) and wanted to start playing a mobile game that has progress as a main focus. The requisites are that the game has to be online, we can co-op as a group of 5 or 6 (preferably 6) and genre is pretty much open. When we were a reduced group we loved and played the heck out of Ulala:Idle Adventures, and now we are also playing Rise of Kingdoms. Bonus points if serious clans and alliances are not a main focus or they have a low impact on the game. Some of my friends have iphones, but I hope that won't be a problem.

Other games we have loved (not all android gaming): Brawl Stars (3v3 tournaments between us), we play a lot of Tabletop Simulator and Garrys Mod, some of us play AFK Arena.

Hope I'm being specific enough! Thanks in advance!

[Request] What're your favorite idle/incremental/rogue-lite games?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 04:41 PM PDT

I've been looking for a good one to sit through while quarantined. Found that I love games that progress with like skill points after each death (rogue-lites) and games that progress on their own (idle/incrementals).

One's I've liked before were Pocket Rogues, Kittens Game, Dungeon Defense, Wayward Souls, Soul Knight, and Almost a Hero. Kind of all over the place, but you get it (I hope).

I like games that have progression, like better loot/stats, that can increase after each death/loss.

I like single player, but online multiplayer clan-like factions or whatever is fine too.

I prefer paid games over free, but if there's a good free one, I wouldn't mind.

    [Request] Lineage/breeding type game

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 08:32 PM PDT

Looking for games that have some type of lineage built in where you have (for example) hero x and heroine y, and (nothing sexual) they have a baby that takes on some traits of each (punnit square style). Doesn't have to be heroes but the "breeding" for traits should advance the gameplay.

Prefer F2P, don't mind IAP to "get ahead" as long as it doesn't ruin the game.

Prefer offline. Online if there aren't clans and guilds.

Knights of Ages was promising but I don't think the traits carry through well.

    Phone cooling

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 10:22 AM PDT

How do you guys keep your phone cooling during extended gaming sessions? I have seen some cooling fan clips you can get for your phone on ebay but I don't know how well they work so I am hesitant to purchase one. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to keep the phone cool?

Controller touch screen mapping questions...for 2020

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 07:03 AM PDT

I've looked through a few posts on this sub about some apps like Octopus and Game Controller Pro, the former requires questionable permissions to be given, the later requires the device to be rooted. Being new to android I'm not comfortable doing either.

Has anyone come across a way to "gently" enable a Bluetooth controller to have its buttons mapped to the touch screen?

    Blooms TD 6

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 07:44 PM PDT

This is the game I'm talking about:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninjakiwi.bloonstd6

My question is about this game is this: the game is 4.99 to buy, but it has in-game purchases.

I am wondering if this is going to be a pay to win type game. I dont mind paying for a game or even having IAP to enhance a game if it's not required to play or win.

I dont want to shell out 5 bucks just to have to keep dropping 10-20 bucks a week to play and keep up.

Anyone played this game before and can tell me if this will need more purchasing to play and keep up with others?

Thanks for any insights into the game.

I can't find this game, can someone help?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 02:08 AM PDT

I was sitting on my phone trying to find something to play when i remembered an old game that i used to play.

I remember that it was a game where one player played as one of many selectable monsters and they had to destroy a city, while the other players played as army characters like soldiers and planes who had to kill the monster before he succeeded. I also remember that you unlocked more characters the more you leveled up. It also had a cartoonish art style.

I've been searching for this game for the past hour and i can't find anything about it, so if someone could help me by telling me the name, i would be very greatful.

    Thank you!

    Anyone remember Idle Crusade/Idle Adventure?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 05:23 PM PDT

This was an android game that was out in 2016 on the play store and I can't find it anywhere or any games like it!! There were teams of three, 9 different classes with a vast loot table, lots of skilling, very grind-based, and a huge crafting/smelting aspect. I remember reaching Rank 200 in the world arena and logging on one day to find I was unable to connect, and it was never seen again. Just wondering if anyone remembers this idle-rpg gem and if anyone knows any game like it. The closest I can find is Ulala, but it isn't scratching that itch, ya know? All help greatly appreciated!!

[Request] Suggest me a game which made you really emotional.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 04:06 AM PDT

I played a Visual novel called One Thousand Lies and in the end, I was really emotional. The game touched my heart in more ways than one and even made me question some of the relationships I have in real life.

Can you guys recommend me games that made you feel a similar way? Something that deeply impacted you, touched your heart or even made you cry.

Edit: I would prefer it if the game was a little short since I have my studies to concentrate on as well. Thanks for all the recommendations!

Pairing a nyko mini controller issues

I'm trying to connect a galaxy tab s5e to a nyko mini wireless core controller seen here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRWL1QT/ref.

I've figured out that home+a gets me connected as a gamepad rather than pro controller, and is recognized by a bunch of games, but doesn't respond to any inputs.

Looking for cod mobile alternative that...

    Posted: 18 Apr 2020 06:00 PM PDT

Isn't pay to win. Doesn't have an enormous amount of pc emulating players at high ranks. Doesnt have lots of hackers. Is not critical ops or standoff 2 - tried them. Cops greeted me with stuff to buy, lots of crates and guns whatever... might be wrong but feels pay to win. Standoff 2 is the same. Both of them have poor controls and gameplay (in my opinion). Is not a space scifi shooter, must be modern, so no shadow gun, of which I assume that's also pay to win.

My guess is what I'm looking for doesnt exist lol.
