I had recently migrated from Iphone to Android and realized that Spotify for Android doesn't have the ability to swipe a track to add to a queue which is incredibly useful if you are on the go queueing. Spotify's system for change is based on votes if you would like this feature give it a vote!

My Experience with the Pixel 4 XL. Is is worth the current discounted prices? Yes...ish

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:51 PM PST

So I was pretty positive with the pixel 3a xl last month and found it to be a fantastic phone for most users. Well due to some price matching shenanigans I ended up procuring a pixel 4 xl 64gb for $600 + $200 gift card, which I tend gave the 3a to a friend. With frequent sales on the device in recent weeks on this phone, the question I've heard is if the phone is worth it at the same price as other $500ish sd855 devices available here in the US (oneplus 7 pro/7t, used s10/note 10)... and personally I think there is a case here... but you have to know all the good and bad here so lets talk about this phone!

    • From using this phone for a good month or so, the main vibe I get from this... is this truly is google's iphone x/xs competitor in every aspect. A huge focus on face unlock tech, zoom lense, flat screen. Smooth gestures. Still no expandable memory. This is a mixed bag depending on what you want, but I think overall its a positive thing.

    • Let's talk about the hardware... which is as quirky as all pixel phones. Cute artsy designs, that seems a bit silly for the msrp price in 2019, but there isn't really any major complaints I have besides it not looking as sexy as my note 10+. But the trade off is that apps all work 100% as you expect. No punch hole or notches interfering with apps or zoom to fit videos. Everything just works which is nice. I shall always be 100% on board with a completely flat screen too. No weird coloring on the sides, and any cheap tempered glass screen protector you find on amazon would work just fine. Haptics are great as well, modern pixels are still the best on android. Stereo speakers are still pretty solid for a phone. The only complaint I have is that... this phone really does weigh quite a bit (193g) for how little battery and screen and quantity of hardware you get. Wonder if the soli sensor is heavy?

    • The screen... is decent? Was impressed that google got on the high refresh screen before quite a few other android manufacturers (LG, huawei, xiaomi... maybe). The trade off is the max brightness isn't something to brag about. Not really an outdoors phone. The phone also is on 90hz most of the time now after a few post release updates.

    • User interface... well this is google's approach to stock android on a high refresh panel... this is about as smooth as it gets, even compare to my experience on the op7pro. Think google finally nailed it with android 10. In terms of whats unique though... i know everyone talks about the slicker google assistance ui... its slick, but i still don't really use it that much to begin with. The thing I did notice that I've never seen a review mention... is that corners are curved on the app switcher! I double checked and the 3a has sharp corners on the apps. Strange 'exclusive' for the pixel 4... stock android is still missing a bunch of little things I enjoy coming from samsung as my daily driver these days. splitscreen apps still push up the top app when typing on the bottom so you can really chat with someone while watching something. You also gotta hold a text box to bring up the controls (select all, paste etc) while on samsung phones a tap of the text box brings it up. Having to manually switch to dark mode is hilarious, but it does seem like android 11 will add in a scheduler. 6gb of ram is nice, but apps still obviously reload more often than on my note 10+. Baby steps I guess.

    • Soli is... the gestures work for me most of the time unlike some reviewers, but I've basically never used it since I played with it on the first day. It needs way more controls! I don't mute my alarm or skip tracks that much to begin with, but play/pause... maybe volume controls... there are plenty of things that I would like and its weird that this stuff isn't customizable. I know android 11 adds 1 new feature so far... hopefully there are more. Personally would have preferred if google ditched the system and go back to the crazy notch lol.

    • Face unlock works great. It's the fastest 'secure' option around I feel. Shame still plenty of apps don't support it, including my 2-3 bank apps. It also unlocks way too easy still. It was never patched to have a toggle of requiring eye to focus... Half the time I walk by the phone on a qi charger it unlocks to home, and yes I know I can configure it to require swipe up to unlock like ios, but I don't want that. Still though, it works fine with screen protectors unlike my samsung's awful ultrasonic fp sensor... so thats always a plus.

    • Cameras are still good stuff, but man... the lack of a wide angle really does hurt me, as someone that uses this all the time on my note. The zoom is fine. Nothing magical or insane like the periscope zoom on the huawei or samsung. I'm also not a fan of the camera app layout. Wish they'd add zoom buttons at the bottom like every other camera app these days. Also just the overall layout feels imbalanced... like there is just a lot of empty space at the top that could be used for... something! Also the lack of full res google photos backup is stupid and probably cost google next to nothing to support because there are like no pixel buyers. A free trial to google one is no where near the same thing.

    • Battery life has been.... ok. I can get it down to 30% by noon if I'm really using it... but google is quite good with idle battery unlike samsung... so it kinda balances out? Charging speeds is just... pretty underwhelming when I can fully charge my much larger battery in the note 10+ in about 30-40min less. Also apparently fast wireless charging works on non pixel stand stuff now? I've not successfully got that to work on any qi chargers I have around the house though.

    • So lets talk about the biggest issue that is probably make or break for many folks. Storage. The lack of expandable memory is stupid. Like real stupid especially when you cap at 128gb. Let's just say restoring my backup of my note 10+ to the pixel 4 xl took up 70% of the storage of the 64gb. Now i'm at about 90% full after a month of use with most of that being filled from podcasts and games. 64gb of base storage without expandable memory is a travesty for any phone over $400 imo. It's actually incredibly easy to fill up storage these days with random stuff caching crap. I just checked and the google app takes up a gig of storage. The other option is 128gb... but $100 premium for 64 more gb... Jesus google. It's like a lose lose situation either way. So in the end if you fill up your phone with a lot of music/podcasts/ photos/3d games/video etc. then yeah I'd say avoid the pixel line period. If this isn't an issue... well then its not an issue for you.

So yeah in the end, would I recommend this phone over other options in this price? Depends. The closest direction comparison in the US is the oneplus 7T that is also available for $500 new atm. You get wide angle and a macro lense while the google will take overall better photos, but the 7t lets you fill up the phone with more photos! Pixel has IP rating and wireless charging, and both have smooth 90hz experience. but oneplus has the extra ram and faster charging.

Still think for most people the oneplus is the better buy... which is saying something even when the pixel is nearly half the msrp.

If you really want all the features and are fine buying used though... 2019 samsung flagships at $500ish range is the best buy imo.

If we are comparing this to other google phones... I'd still probably recommend the 3a/xl to the 4 family because outside of the smoother screen, my day to day experience with these 2 phones were basically the same and I don't think wireless charging and the 90hz screen is worth the extra benjamins.

I'm still planning on keeping this phone for a while though while I shuffle my other phones around to be able to afford the s20 ultra without it being too painful lol. It's a good phone for people that know what they are getting into. Which clearly isn't that many people (btw the phone I bought new in january was on the nov security update... so a launch device).

Samsung finally caved and added more screen zoom options on one ui 2.1!

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 05:52 PM PST

Noticed this when playing around with demo s20 units, and I've not seen it posted on any other sites yet. https://i.imgur.com/Q0TxRJs.png

Huge news at least for people like me who prefer things to be smaller. In the past you'd have to go into dev options to tweak that, and often it broke some ui stuff, like the samsung keyboard or the launcher (both were fixed at some point).

Here is how it looks on my note 10+ options in comparison

Only seen this on the s20 so far, so not sure if other oneui 2.1 phones out there have this (eg z flip).

What's your choice for the best Android browser and why?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 02:14 PM PST

Browsers are a very big thing in any smartphone so I'm always curious about what new ones can bring to the table, on my side this its my choice:

    Browser: Opera touch

Pros: it's very optimized for a touch screen with gestures, it's actually one of the easiest I have found to use single handed and one of the best ways to handle tabs plus it has an ad blocker and saves data and battery quite well.

Cons: it has mixed integration with other apps, lastpass won't work with it, also double tap to the link it's needed to open Google maps among other stuff like that, also a few websites won't load properly.

    Android devices and macOS common?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 06:42 AM PST

Our of curiosity, how many people out there prefer Android for mobile but macOS or even iPad OS on a tablet? I recently tried the iPhone 11 but went with the Pixel 4 due to a deal and it being $200 less and find that it works better for my work flow. USB-C charging and accessories like airpods work fine as well so no complaints here.

Just wondering if it's really that uncommon since I traditionally notice people who buy into Apples ecosystem generally includes iPhones due to heavier OS level integration.

Update: How to remove the Samsung Members app (Removing the "no more free memory leak")

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 11:53 PM PST

If you use a Samsung phone and have experienced a storage leak recently, it is likely due to a change affecting the Samsung Members application. To fix this, here are some solutions.

To find the app, follow these directions:

    1. Open settings.
    2. Select "Device Care"
    3. Select the "Storage" icon.
    4. Select the "Apps" icon.
    5. Then scroll through the apps until you get to the "Samsung Members" app. The list of apps isn't in a specific order, so you'll probably need to look at the full list.
    6. Normally this will not work as this app is hidden from Android.

If you are having storage issues, and still don't see the app, I strongly suggest downloading AVG Cleaner.

    1. When you open that app, you'll see an icon called 'APPS", select it.
    2. In the next dialog, select the "Storage" icon. Then you will see all of your apps listed from most storage used to least. The "Samsung Members" application should be at the top.

Please note, I am only endorsing AVG Cleaner because it worked for me. Your mileage may vary.
