The LG G8x can now do what everyone said they wanted it to do - DS emulation on both screens!

    Pic.

I was able to get it to work by downloading an app that can force any app into Wide Mode. The Drastic DS emulator doesn't allow you to run top and bottom screens in landscape like this set up would need so I got another app that could force landscape. Then I resized the screens and placed the buttons appropriately in Drastic's settings.

It sounds like a lot but now it's all set up, I can boot it in a couple seconds this way.

    I really enjoy pop-up cameras

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 02:45 PM PST

I recently bought a Mi 9t pro to replace my pixel 2xl. I did check out other phones with a hole-punch screen but to me it seems like a step backwards (until we get under-screen cameras that are as good as current ones anyway). Here's why:

Privacy. Android has often told me so and so app recently used my camera. Even when that app isnt currently open and hasnt been open in the background. Sure they could still use the rear camera, but to me that's less of a privacy issue.

Also, the general design. Laptops don't have notches, TVs don't, so why would my phone screen have one. Sure it might not be so noticeable after a while, but to me that's like saying you don't notice the ugly design of your car while driving it.

Now for the downsides of no water resistance or risk of the motor breaking: phone insurance. Sure it might seem ridiculous to insure something like a phone, but I find the prices very reasonable. 5€ a month and you don't have to worry about anything. I've mentioned the look of the phone is important to me, so I dislike using a case. Anything that happens to the phone will be fixed, free of charge so what does it matter?

Anyways, I'll be sticking to pop-up cameras until under-screen tech is mature.

Omitted feature in recent phones- LED notification. Why nobody cares about it anymore?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 07:13 AM PST

LEt's start a discussion. As an owner of Samsung S7 Edge I am slowly thinking about an upgrade, but there was no interesting phone in the whole 2019 for me. I care about everything to fill my needs in a smartphone, but I can turn a blind eye on some drawbacks. This strategy worked until 2019 came. Right now we have terribly pricy phones, software upgrade situation is not getting better, battery life can be meh or just okay and other problems. Of course some things are better than before: almost all phones have OLED displays, small bezels. And that's leads to another problem: no LED notification! I know that there is AOD, some fancy gestures, lift phone to see notifications on the screen, but for me the LED is the best way to inform user about new notification. It drains nearly 0 battery, visible from all angles, you can assign different colours to it. AOD drains about 3 percent of battery per hour, needs a working screen and its electronics. Yet the LED are missing in nearly every flagship in 2019 and no one talks about it. I refuse to buy nearly 1000 $ phone if it doesn't have LED notification. Am I the only one who cares?

As a lover of big screen phones, I am afraid the phones are getting too big.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 05:22 PM PST

I have always owned the biggest version of the Samsung galaxy phones. My recent phone is S10+. I bought it the day it came out and I had loved it until just couple of months ago.

I have big hands but I was beginning to get tired of using this phone with one hand. And I feel like there is less privacy while on the phone out in public. I've only had these thoughts in the last few months. Then I started looking at smaller phones like the S10e and s10. I went to bestbuy to actually hold these phones in my hand and they felt really comfortable, and once I was focused on these individual phones; even their screen sizes seemed big.

I was surprised at what was happening to me. A guy who has always loved the big screen phones was now attracted to smaller screen phones in a matter of months. And these phones had always existed alongside my s10+

Plus with these zero bezel phones these days, having even a 5.8" doesn't seem that big to hold in one hand. (compared to when the big screen Notes were coming out, with thick top and chin.)

So I had my heart set on S20 because I thought it would be similarly sized as the S10. But now the rumors are that it wont get the best camera sensor and battery. This is a huge let down for me. I value the cameras as being one of the top things to look at while buying a new phone. So now if I want to get the 108mp camera I have to go with the big screen again. I understand that it might be hard to fit into a smaller body but Its still a bummer.

When I used to read comments about people saying "phones are getting too big" I used to scoff them off. But now it seems like I'm one of those people.

    Gboard Theming Tips and Tricks

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 09:11 AM PST

After upgrading to Android 10 on my Pixel 3a XL and having nearly all my apps follow the System Light or Dark Theme automatically (with the exception of Facebook Messenger and Gboard), I started wondering why Google's own keyboard didn't do it.

I came across this article: https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/05/09/gboard-automatically-adjusts-its-looks-based-on-your-android-color-accents-and-dark-mode-settings/ on themes and colors, but had never been able to make it work.

I ended up finding a post here on Reddit on how to make it automatically follow Dark and Light themes:

Whatever theme setting you currently have on Gboard, click on it and on the bottom right-hand corner, click on the trash bin to delete it. If your system is Light, the keyboard will turn to the default accent theme you have. I had Pixel blue (light) yesterday and it was the default it chose. When I changed to Dark Theme later in the evening, it automatically became dark!

Finally, as I like to change accent colors for the system everyday, today I picked Cinnamon (light) and to my surprise, Gboard followed it, turning it into a chocolate brown sort of tone. Neat! I'd been trying to do that for ages!

    Android 11 Features

    Posted: 12 Jan 2020 06:11 AM PST

I know it seems like Android 10 is just being installed on some devices, but i was curious what features you guys are looking for in Android 11? For me, I would love a Android equivalent to AirDrop and more customization for gestures, specifically a way to undo a back gesture (which I'm finding myself needing sometimes). Would love to hear your opinions :).

The only thing that I miss after coming from "Windows 10 Mobile" to "Android"

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 01:25 AM PST

The only thing that I miss after migrating from "Windows 10 Mobile" to "Android" is the option to pin any settings option to home screen. In "Windows 10 Mobile" I could easily pin the "Update" setting to home screen. I wish "Android" also had that option. I miss that feature so much.
