4 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 133) Posted: 19 Jan 2020 02:24 AM PST Welcome back to my weekly summary of the most interesting games I played last week. I've got some good ones for ya'll this week! :) This week's games range from a music rhythm game that I've spent far too much time on this week, to a unique indie roguelike shooter with a distinct art-style and UI, a punishing action RPG where we have to time our attacks and block incoming attacks at JUST the right time to survive, and lastly, a shoot'em'Up space game perfect for those 5-minute casual play-sessions. Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below. New to these posts? Check out the first one from 133 weeks ago here. The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is. Let's get to the games:Beat Fire [Game Size: 77 MB] (free)Genre: Music / Rhythm / EDM - Offline Playable Orientation: Portrait Required Attention: Full tl;dr review: Beat Fire is a music rhythm game where we wipe left and right to aim our gun (yes, you read that right, a gun) at tiles coming from the top of the screen to the rhythm of EDM tracks. With only 3 lives, even on normal difficulty, the game is rather punishing, but the gameplay feels amazing, and I had a lot of fun with Beat Fire. We unlock new tracks through spending in-game gold, which we earn quickly through gameplay, or by watching advertisements. I like this way of monetization as it makes Beat Fire one of the few rhythm games on mobile where we don't have to spend real-life money to unlock tracks. Google Play: Here YouTube First Impressions / Review: Here ReversEstory [Game Size: 130 MB] (free)Genre: Roguelike / Shooter / Indie - Offline Playable Orientation: Portrait Required Attention: Some tl;dr review: ReversEstory is a unique 2D roguelike shooter - and trust me - everything from the controls to the graphics and UI is unique in this game. The premise is that we swipe to jump around each map while we pickup equipment pieces from chests and tap to fire arrows to deal with enemies. Upon finishing a map, we get to select one of two random attributes that will influence the next randomly generated map, and we keep going like this for as long as we can survive. The boss battles in ReversEstory are challenging and fun, and while the game is very badly translated (from Japanese), the monetization is very relaxed, with 2 iAPs to support the developer, and a few ads here and there. Truly one of the most unique games I've played on mobile, and one that I really enjoy. Google Play: Here YouTube First Impressions / Review: Here Demon Blade [Total Game Size: 263 MB] (free)Genre: RPG / Samurai-themed - Requires Online Access Orientation: Portrait Required Attention: Full tl;dr review: Demon Blade is a samurai-themed action RPG with a unique combat system where we have to swipe to attack and tap to defend at just the right time to avoid dying to the enemies we're fighting. Combat is super challenging in this game, even right from the beginning, but if you like timing-based combat, you'll most likely enjoy Demon Blade. Between levels, we equip new gear and level it up using resources earned through gameplay before we head back into one of the game's multiple game-modes. Monetization happens through a gacha system, which is strictly used to unlock "demons", which are infused into our weapons, and through the game's energy system. I don't particularly like the monetization system, but the gameplay is good enough to still make it worthwhile to take the game for a spin. Google Play: Here YouTube First Impressions / Review: Here Virus War [Total Game Size: 216 MB] (free)Genre: Shoot'em'Up / Arcade / Action - Offline Playable Orientation: Portrait Required Attention: Full tl;dr review: Virus War is a space shooter that plays almost exactly like a bullet-hell game, except there are no bullets. Instead, we have to eliminate the enemy viruses flying towards us so they don't hit our spaceship. Progression is based on an endless series of campaign levels, and in-between these, we can improve the strength and fire-rate of our normal weapon and level up a range of different special weapons to make us stronger. Premium currency is earned through daily quests and login rewards and can be bought through iAP to progress faster in the game, which doesn't feel necessary. There are no forced ads, but the game does deploy a life energy system, which means we spend 5 energy to enter a match, and if we win, we earn the 5 energy back again. We have 80 energy in total, so I haven't yet experienced running out of energy. I'm really frustrated with the play store Posted: 19 Jan 2020 09:08 AM PST Is there any website where I can just find good games? I hate sifting through tons of shitty games, finding meh indie games, and occasionally finding a single good game. [link] [comments]
COD Mobile has rigged matchmaking. Posted: 18 Jan 2020 04:19 PM PST A winning streak often leads right into a losing streak. Often you'll get put on a bad team full of noobs and bots, just so you lose often while the other team has actual good players and maybe even someone showing off their money via fancy skins and p2w guns (to try to convince you to buy them). Basically if you lose a match by a big loss or if you carried your team (of bots and noobs) and still lost, then you should stop playing for a few hours or maybe for the day. The system is designed to try to also retain you, not just put you in a p2w match until you quit. So by the time you come back to the game, the system will have most likely reset and you might even get an easy win. This affects both pub and ranked lobbies. I suspect it might also affect Battle Royale, but that would be a bit differently tweaked perhaps because of how BR works functionally (since nobody has guns at the start). I'm not the only one who noticed either, I'll post some links below. https://amp.reddit.com/r/CallOfDuty/comments/ddnjgt/mobile_is_cod_mobile_rigged/ https://www.reddit.com/r/CallOfDutyMobile/comments/eco7mo/the_matchmaking_is_potentially_rigged_and_a_rant/ (This one is my post from a while ago, but check out the comments!) EXTRA BONUS! (Something else I spotted in the new update, but wasn't announced.) As of season 3 update, now you can't even view the enemies teams rank or levels! This means they're trying to hide something, otherwise why would they do it? Another thing, matchmaking takes longer. Practically there's fewer payers with fancy gear and veterans to match with than players who aren't either, perhaps now they wait a bit to get you an open slot on one of those matches just so you can see how "good" the latest lucky draw gun is or how you really need to spend and buy better guns. I've even noticed sometimes I join matches already in progress as well. That's not good. The worst affected mode by that would be free for all, since joining late means you are behind everyone else in the race for the kills. Some gun perks are also NOT available on free guns. I have yet to see a free gun that grants 3 extra rounds for close range kills, which is enough to get another kill and 3 more rounds! Man O War anyone? That perk alone if abused properly means that you practically don't ever have to reload so you'll always be ready for an incoming enemy. Man O War kills with just 3 hits at short and medium range. HawksNest himself said it's the best mid range assault rifle, but TBH it's probably more P2W at close range just because of the perk. All you got to do is camp in a corner near an enemy spawn. Another less popular YouTuber abused it at close range pretty easily and got an easy nuke. This is just another day at Activision/Tencent... they've done this sort of thing before. A lot of you guys don't really know what SBMM or EOMM is, or the point of it; and this is what the developers want. You're actually being deceived and getting something like EOMM, a tweaked version of SBMM designed for maximizing profits, playtime (so you can pay more in the future), and reduce loss of players (often a result of a pay to win system) by letting them have a good match just so they have a small glimmer of hope (enough to stay). At the end of the day, whatever they decide to call it (even it they call it SBMM, it is likely not SBMM) it's overall pay to win and exploitative. SBMM puts players of equal skill against each other, which means that veterans get challenging matches, and new players have room to improve as they don't constantly die at their spawn. As a result new players stay and get better, and eventually join the top fraggers, while veterans also stay because matches are fun and exciting because it's not always a easy boring winning streak. Matches don't get stale here as both groups of players and their respective teams have to fight to come out on top. It feels good when you are losing a match, but then you push harder that last bit and surprise the enemy team by winning by a few points. With EOMM your matches get tweaked to increase or decrease your chances of winning based on how much you played, how much you spend, ect. The idea is to create a more invisible pay to win tactic so that you will pay more, but also not too pay to win that they start to lose lots of players. The document and articles linked below describes in detail how the system works. It's not just exclusive to EA or Activision either, other developers can cook up their own rigged system. There can be some variations, but the end goal is the same. https://wccftech.com/ea-matchmaking-algorithm/ https://kotaku.com/activision-patents-matchmaking-that-encourages-players-1819630937 https://www.pcgamer.com/activision-wins-patent-that-uses-matchmaking-to-make-you-want-to-buy-stuff/ Randomized Matchmaking is like EOMM, except they don't optimize anything. They allow pretty much anyone to play together, which means veterans can kill off newer players. In a game where grinding better gear is possible at higher levels, while the same gear is available immediately for purchase...it becomes pay to win. Essentially it can have the same affect as EOMM. [Request] Looking for old-school-JRPG style games Posted: 19 Jan 2020 03:39 AM PST Like the title says, I'm looking for recommendations for good games that are in the old school turn based jrpg style, preferably with pixel graphic style and not gacha based. Something as similar as possible to old final fantasy or dragon quest games. [link] [comments]
[REQUEST] Are there any sandbox - open-world games? Posted: 19 Jan 2020 12:04 PM PST preferably free ones, (cause I'm kinda running low for the time being) I just really enjoy games that have simulation or breaking physics! I find it interesting how it works and acts. ( [link] [comments]
[Request] Mobile CCG with quick matches Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:40 AM PST I have played, and enjoyed, most of the big mobile CCGs. I spent the most time with Hearthstone and am an avid MTG player. But I am looking for a true "bathroom break" game, where I can get a match/game (or two) in under 5 minutes. Thank you! [link] [comments]
[REQUEST] An offline, no/minimum ads, relaxing sort of games Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:34 AM PST I'm looking for something that you can play without internet or mobile connection, something with minimum or non-intrusive ads, and relaxing. Something like Sailor Cats or those pet/terrarium games/apps? I'm sometimes without Wi-Fi or areas with bad reception. [link] [comments]

[Request] A game like Summoners War Posted: 19 Jan 2020 10:44 AM PST So i have played summoners war since it started. the grind is great and the auto is nice. I play mainly with my coworker when we have downtime and we have A LOT of downtime. I really like the character collecting, the community is nice and somewhat helpful but the rune grind is god awful and I am getting tired of gotcha (i played unison league for ever). I played Pokemon blue/yellow as a wee lad and it was just the best. So my parameters would be: Character collection, multiplayer with chat/friend list, some sort of auto in dungeon levels. Fast-forward is really nice but not needed. We have tried: Raid shadow legends, destiny child (lol bewbs), AFK arena, Seven Kingdoms, Might and magic Elemental, Legend of Blades, Heroes Charge. are there any premium games that tick my boxes? we are ftp4life but buying upfront would be cool. [Request] Game With Good Grind and Progression Posted: 18 Jan 2020 03:09 PM PST Hi all, I am a PhD student and have a lot of lab work where I have to wait for the experimental setup to heatup, cooldown or what not and hence I have a lot of free time on my hands. I have had a bad addiction of pay 2 win games and spent a lot of money into. Yesterday while drunk I quit cold turkey and sold these them and have vowed to not spend ever again. I want to get rid of the spending addiction, but keep my gaming addiction as its gotten out me of a lot of trouble and keeps me happy and motivated. Please suggest games that I can pick and play. I don't mind it being pay 2 progress faster as long all the things in the game are attainable without spending a dime. If possible newer games which have come up in the last 6 months or coming out shortly. [link] [comments]
[REQUEST]Can someone help me find me a game very similar to armajet? Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:39 PM PST [REQUEST] If I recall correctly, this game has more or less the same gameplay as armajet, but with the characters heavily inspired by tf2. It is functionally the same, in that there is 2d platformer combat, in a similar fashion to armajet. Does anyone know the name of this game? Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments]

[Request] Tower Defense Game with "Maze" Mechanic? Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:10 PM PST Are there any TD games that has maze-ing mechanic, similar to those old Warcraft 3 Custom Maps (Wintermaul, Line Tower Wars, etc..) Where you can build towers in the path of the waves so that you could manipulate their paths to reach their end point. I remember I've played one game with this mechanic, but the levels are too short and can be finished easily with a few builds, the maze-ing mechanic become completely irrelevant. If you guys could suggest any games that has this gameplay, I would really appreciate it. I really miss this kind of game. Thanks :) [link] [comments]

Arknights - Interesting video showing how the game is more than typical gacha Posted: 18 Jan 2020 12:56 PM PST I see many people dismissing Arknights due to being a gacha. However unlike the majority released in prior years that are TD, but just come down to team power this game actually does have proper TD strategic elements and even provides mechanics not found in the mainstream TD games (gemcraft - which just had a new release last week on steam - look into it if you are a TD fan). Here is a video clip of someone exploiting blocking and pull mechanics with the terrain of the map to beat a later level with only one character instead of up to 9. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScjjLhlvjD8 The game has been out for half a year overseas and nearly all story stages have been beaten with different setups even only using really lowly ranked heroes (2*). You just have to find out how. Anther example of why its not a typical gacha is that most people are finding it slightly difficult beating a scenario in the first day with whole teams of 4* + 2 5*/6* units (can get best in game) that everyone gets as prereg rewards. However a player showed how its possible to do it with mostly 2*/3*/4* units that players get on first day just playing first hour of story. Basically unlike games like SW whereby a dps 5* Nat that is considered top tier can solo things that entire team of 3* dps fail. In this game 2* and 3* are viable in certain scenarios.
