Which current smartphones support OTG cameras natively? (IRL streaming, remote assistance, telemedicine, etc.)

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 01:57 AM PST

Well, Android 9 added native support for external cameras which would include regular webcams, some action cams, microscopes. The feature flag is called android.hardware.camera.external

The bad news it's not mandatory for device manufacturers to implement/port this feature in Hardware Abstraction Level (IIRC), and without being specifically ported it doesn't work.

I have found three people in the whole Internets that have ever said anything about which devices do support it, and which do not:

    1. The first guy wrote he tried a bunch of unspecified phones from top manufacturers and none supported the feature.
    2. The second guy wrote it totally works on his Galaxy S10e.
    3. The third guy replied that it doesn't work on his Galaxy S10e.

I have found no way to find out which device you should buy if you want to be able to use an external camera.

Yes, you can use specialized third-party native apps that implement UVC protocol on their own (CameraFi, etc.), but some use-cases aren't covered by any of these capture apps, so you really need native support. Especially true for WebRTC apps that work in a browser.

Why is this important? If you google this topic you'll find out that there are lots of people asking about native OTG camera support, and there's currently no good answer for them. IRL streaming, telemedicine, remote assistance, etc. All these fields would benefit if there was a list of devices that support external cams natively.

Let's make the list of supporting devices. If you have:

    • a smartphone with Pie, especially if it was shipped with Pie pre-installed
    • a USB-A dongle
    • a standard webcam, no matter if old (all webcams since mid-2000s support UVC standard)

Plug the latter into the former and open webcamtests.com in Chrome. If your webcam is detected and works as a video source, you have native support. Make a screenshot, share your results in the comments, don't forget to mention the device. If it doesn't work — tell us as well.

    Cheers!

    Frustrated with Amazon Music

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 07:10 AM PST

I want a music service that I can download music from and keep on my phone to listen to that will not use my data (Samsung Galaxy S9 / AT&T / USA). I have been using Amazon Music for years. Downloaded a bunch of their free music, but also have bought some. I love that when you buy a CD through Amazon, it gives you the digital download for that CD. But as they move to Amazon Music Unlimited, there is less and less free music to choose from. I just refuse to pay Amazon for another service when I am already paying them for my Prime membership. Another issue is that anytime I do something with my Amazon account, like change my password or like last time I got a new device, I have to redownload all of the music and recreate playlists. It is frustrating. I have a lot of downloaded music and it takes a lot of time. I do not have an unlimited data plan and I use public transportation to commute from work so I don't want to use a streaming service that will eat my data. Any advice is much appreciated.

Most reliable phone you've had from a Android perspective?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:19 AM PST

    Hi All

I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy S8, on the whole the phone has been fine but I have come across random glitches or bugs which have been frustrating, e.g. currently it disconnects from my cars bluetooth constantly so its not possible to play music properly, tested on a few other phones and they work fine so its not the car.

My question, from your experience which manfacturers have the least buggy phones from a software perspective? to me the answer was Pixel as I was thinking if Google control the hardware AND software it should be fairly smooth and reliable but speaking to a mate of mine who owns one he's also run into issues (which of course could be a isolated case).

Any concenus here? this will shape my next purchase decision in a couple of months :)

Downloaded videos keep being removed from device.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 08:34 AM PST

I mistakenly removed all my photos and videos to save space from my Photos app. I then when back to download all my mp4s and gifs. All of these keep getting removed from my device after a couple of days or weeks and i have to keep downloading them. Is there a reason why these keep getting removed? I have plenty of space left. Is there a way to set them to never be removed or is there a setting to stop this?

My Pixel 2XL has slight burn in from the navigation bar. Is the common on other devices or is it a Google quality issue?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:39 AM PST

I'm pretty sure this is mainly due to the increase of white nav bars within many apps. The device is at least 2 years old now and it's not hugely noticeable but it will annoy me now I've seen it. Does this happen with most Android phones or is it a result of a poorer quality panel? Also I know switching to gesture navigation would remove the nav bar and prevent burn in but I can't stand the gesture navigation.

    Unlocking Phones

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:13 AM PST

I was wondering if I were to say buy a phone that is locked to a different carrier than my own:

    1. How likely are they to unlock it if I asked?
    2. Could you just flash a new ROM and bypass all that headache?
      1. If so, how difficult would that be? I've flashed custom ROMs before, but they were on unlocked devices.

    Thnkpad Tablet 2

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:52 AM PST

Looking for some insight on getting Android installed on a Thinkpad Tablet 2. Got it from work as a gift like 6 years ago, was hoping to repurpose it before I explorer just junking it. (Cause Windows runs like hot garbage on it).
It is an Intel Atom Z2760 CPU.

I've tried PheonixOS, RemixOS and the stock Android x86. Nothing seems to load.
Has anyone had any success with this device?

I keep getting a Grey bubble pop up at the bottom of my screen saying "network error", this happens on both wifi and 4G. Is there anyway to tell what is causing this? It happens like every 10-20 seconds.

    USB Settings Disabled

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:32 AM PST

Samsung A20, up-to-date firmware, not rooted, no apk's or anything fishy.

    https://imgur.com/a/DAcPccz

As seen in the above image, all the selections are disabled. None of the "USB Controlled By" options is selected (and can't be, because they're disabled)

My PC can connect to the phone just fine. A pop up asks if I want to give access to the files, and that selection actually switches the active radio button on the settings screen, which remains disabled. I can even use USB tethering from the connection menu without any problems, which again does change the radio button on the screen, but still is disabled.

So it's not the PC, not the cable, not the usb-c connector on the phone, actually the issue seems to be relevant to only and only to that specific UI.

Tried clearing the Cache and Data for USBSettings system app, didn't help. Reboot etc didn't work. I really don't want to resort to a factory restore, primarily because I believe it's a brute solution and stuff like that should be solvable without such overkill approaches :)

I'd really appreciate any help. Let me know if you're having the "exact" same issue, I'll at least find comfort in knowing I'm not the only one.

    Android pop-up screen.....

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:26 AM PST

My phone has developed an issue where frequently when using any app, a new grey screen will open on top of whatever I am using. When I go back or select to view open apps, it will show the grey screen as random apps on my phone when they were not opened, etc. Occasionally the screen will show a game add not related to anything I have downloaded. Suggestions on how to resolve appreciated!

    Seekable/scrub bar on android 10?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:08 AM PST

Hey ! I have an S10 and should be getting android 10 soon. One thing I really want on the new update is a seekable/scrub bar for music to precisely pick where in a song I want to listen to. Both on the notifications bar and the lock screen.

I saw someone post a photo from the beta back in April saying there was one, I'm just wondering if this feature made it into the final release ? Anyone with android 10 for anyone on a samsung device that got the update in their country yet, can you confirm?

    Thanks !

Can I get notified when someone accesses the emergency contacts/information of my android device?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 04:26 AM PST

In android, you can set emergency contacts & information that can be accessed without unlocking your phone. My question is, can I be notified in any way that this information was accessed and exactly when, the next time I unlock my phone.

The reasoning for this question is, emergency information is definitely useful in case of real emergencies, but is also quite personal and can be a risk if an evil minded individual got access to it. Among other things, there is:

    • Name
    • Address
    • Allergies
    • Medications, Organ Donor status, Medical notes
    • Contacts

This information in sensitive: I steal a purse that contains a phone and unmarked house keys, I can immediately see the address and burgle the place. Or I can see emergency contacts and private medical information and call them and do a "your child is in the hospital send me money" scam. Or other scams, just from finding a lost, locked phone.

Now, what I'm asking for doesn't eliminate that risk if your phone is stolen. What it does, at least, is make it so someone can't just do all the above just by gaining access to your phone for a few seconds while you're looking away. If he did, you would be aware of the intrusion and take appropriate action.

    Frustrating message when saving photos.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:57 PM PST

I own a Galaxy S7, my provider is Bell. Whenever I save a photo through the stock messages app I get a prompt "Save attachment, If you do not want to replace file, rename it." always having to rename a pic when saving. I find this annoying and can't fathom why it doesnt just add a number at the end or use a date# format of filename. Is there a way to fix this?

S9+. Using Textra as my texting app. I can use the "blacklist" feature but the texts will still arrive, just hidden. I want a true blocking feature.

I don't want the person to know I've blocked them also.

Fov Front Facing Camera Question Huawei & Samsung

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 07:28 AM PST

Hello! I have been trying to find the answer to this but i cant. I can only seem to find one of the phones Fov's. In some tests it looks as if samsungs' selfie camera does not have as wide a field of view as huawei's. Would this be correct? Can anyone fill in the blanks below:

    Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ = 80-degree Fov

    Huawei P30 Pro - ? Fov
    Huawei Mate 30 Pro - ? Fov
