    Match Three / Link-Matching Recommendations Mega-Thread

    Hello!

Recently I created a thread for android ARPG recommendations, as a way to have an on-going thread for reference when people are looking for that kind of thing. I decided to start another one for match-type games, since that seems to be another oft-seen request around these parts. Obviously there's about a billion of these games, so if you have solid recommendations please hit them up in the comments below!

    Free:

Puzzles & Dragons / Empires and Puzzles

    https://preview.redd.it/jiuit7lak8241.png?width=431&format=png&auto=webp&s=9fa2b9039580d1c8e6c0d8a968684ec5a8f18f69

Okay. I am getting these two out of the way first because I can only imagine that the comments would be filled with their names if I had left them out. The long and short of it is these two games are hugely popular but have never really scratched my itch for whatever reason. I think it's the emphasis on timers and city-upgrading that throws me off. That said, people seem to really like them and get a lot of playtime out of them(years, even) so they definitely deserve to be on this list. Other people with more experience can chime in the comments below!

    Cat Force

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jellybtn.catforce&hl=en_CA

    https://preview.redd.it/76ah3d2dk8241.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=9302af53e12c5742ab08212d2607d6de4056fb78

This is my latest daily-driver as far as match games go, and I'm pretty happy with it. Manages to be both satisfying in the ways that match games are, while also sprinkling in a few solid twists to the genre's mechanics. The characters you are matching will either activate a ranged attack, or a melee attack. Every level has you clearing enemies and other obstructions, and there's a good level of strategy with the bosses as well. It's F2P so there's a good amount of unlocking to do, but so far I haven't seen any timed-chests which had me breathe a sigh of relief. There is also daily/weekly quests to complete, and your cat army is upgradable, so lots to dig into. Really enjoying this one so far.

    Link Pets

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icestorm.link&hl=en_CA

    https://preview.redd.it/dcv640pgk8241.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=1598d9b2204c34e0b2a6aafaf62de51330fa19ae

It's not a match 3 style game (as in you're not swipe-swapping) but rather one where you drag along items to create a long chain (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.) Like most games of this ilk, chain enough of them and you get bonuses, chain bonuses and you get fireworks that seek etc. etc.

What I've been liking about it, is the collecting angle - you get cards with "artifacts" on them and when you complete sets you get xp/coins etc. to level up. You find a LOT of doubles, but the best part is you can sell your doubles to get more xp or coins so it doesn't always feel like you're finding the same useless cards over and over.

    Troll Patrol

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fellhuhn.monstermatch

    https://preview.redd.it/oif4uy8jk8241.png?width=1156&format=png&auto=webp&s=1042d69e66dd08e974036899d2e6d1ccb483604c

Link-matching dungeon-style game that is very reminisent of a classic iOS game; people are super into this one and I've been playing it off and on but there's something that doesn't click for me. I will be keeping an eye on this one though because the devs have been putting a lot of amazing work into it and the game has already made great progress.

    Little Odd Galaxy

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninecatsgames.logalaxy

    https://preview.redd.it/bq5kahbok8241.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9a12739224f315acbcd4fdf8f8ba9e8807a2327

This is a pretty standard, simple take on the genre; I played almost 200 levels and it definitely started to get overly hard but I got a lot of time into the game before it started to get particularly egregious in terms of leaning on the power-ups. You'll end up 'buying' extra moves or some items with coins but not to the point where it feels manipulative and the game gives you a few items every ten levels or so.

    Candy Crush Friends Saga

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.king.candycrush4

    https://preview.redd.it/dgql1i4qk8241.png?width=320&format=png&auto=webp&s=ff848b66d77653bac356df72b9448334ba86b552

It's a candy crush game, so you probably know what you're getting here; not bad at all and the characters with different abilities are pretty cute and entertaining.

    Adventure Xpress

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pikpok.ax.play

    https://preview.redd.it/8e2f3d9vk8241.png?width=642&format=png&auto=webp&s=815b2bc113e5f6423592a6336dbfa2861af86fb3

Older game, but a really solid take on the gem-based or match-based RPG. I found this had a good amount of fun before the reliance on items started to get to me and I eventually uninstalled.

    Gems of War

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.and.games505.gemsofwar

    https://preview.redd.it/c2247laxk8241.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=cf14af18645df9ea399c57d14d13a8081429fb1b

Hugely popular and well-known for a reason; you could play this for a long time (some players say years) without sinking a single transaction into it. For me, I come and go with this one on mobile but lately I've played a lot of the Switch port and it continues to be one of the best Puzzle Quest-likes going right now. The amount of content you have access to here for free can be bewildering, it's terrific.

    Marvel Puzzle Quest

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.d3p.mpq

    https://preview.redd.it/vtimba77a9241.png?width=465&format=png&auto=webp&s=f0eb0afc7984cd572ab9448b7be4a5d0477d135e

Branded take on the Puzzle Quest mechanics; play this one every once in a while, but for me Gems of War is much more enjoyable. Still, this fits the bill if you're looking for more of that kind of experience.

Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.d3p.olympic

    https://preview.redd.it/fbc3sbg9a9241.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=96090f35009cb6bdff8a3e2383cd3fb3d5761f9d

Interesting twist on the Puzzle Quest genre finds you collecting cards and building decks (obviously) which you build up mana from matching to send onto the "battlefield" (as opposed to charging up an attack); lots of content here to play through without dropping any money into the game. I think the only negative I had to say about this game was I wanted to wipe my progress and start all over again, and it seemed like you can't do that unless you contact support, which seemed odd to me.

    Six Match

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.robotacid.sixmatch

    https://preview.redd.it/ufd13yvzk8241.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=41e6277fe645fec1f9ae44d04a227c0d5e99c08d

Has since been removed from the Google Play store, but you might be able to find it somewhere else on the internet wink wink. Much different than your average match game - in this you control a little square on the field and you have six moves to make a match of three or more (you match by moving around which swaps/pushes the gems.) This takes a second to get used to but becomes super satisfying and strategic.

    Cats Atelier

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.cocone.niagho

    https://preview.redd.it/tqugldc2l8241.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=9793fb9b22f6fb769782effc12052309ece8dbae

Cute game where you're matching and following the story of a cat-artist (Vincent Van Meowogh) in 19th century Paris. Has that mechanic that became very popular in recent years where playing through the puzzles allows you to unlock/complete "quests" such as cleaning up the painter's room or completing paintings etc. Thing Homescapes or whatever that one was called. I had some fun with this one!

    Star Wars: Puzzle Droids

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.disney.starwarspuzzledroids_goo

    https://preview.redd.it/a87z3ke4l8241.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=edfe8c4516ce2907eaf637533da9d5f283bda3f1

This is one that I think eventually gets into some rough territory with the leaning into difficulty and need for power-ups but the polish is high and I had enough fun with it for long enough to justify a recommendation.

    Match Land

    https://preview.redd.it/6h1cik17l8241.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cd05860b1a8e2ec4f78f8b2b5be26b3fc62d0b5

A match three RPG that gets very grindy, but it's got a memorable take on the genre and there's both a standard version and another one that has been branded with Cartoon Network characters. I come back to this one here and there and it's got a solid foundation but your mileage could vary with how long you stick with it.

    Diamond Diaries Saga

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.king.diamonddiariessaga

    https://preview.redd.it/27nb2qw8l8241.png?width=430&format=png&auto=webp&s=ca0b70eea21114505759892c15b0d06406d2fbab

Another one from King, this is a link-match type game with a gravity mechanic; solid gameplay and I definitely spent some time with this one a few years back but haven't checked in lately.

    Paid:

    You Must Build a Boat/10000000

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=6823404764101374014

    https://preview.redd.it/cbd427mdl8241.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=a08a67a08fd782415fcafc97321c4bb981682703

These aren't infinite like a lot of match games but the gameplay is great and addictive. More of a sliding-match game but still. Well reviewed for a reason.

    Dr. Meep

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hyperbeard.drmeep

    https://preview.redd.it/yddr44ifl8241.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cac566bd6d282e82a9a28c77f497387a6342b28

This game takes some getting used to. It's hard - really hard. For a reason though, narratively. You are playing a therapist clearing out bad feelings and every character you are working on has certain quirks that mean you need to play MUCH more strategically. Not a swap-mashing kind of game but really, really good.

    Block Legend

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DotWarriorGames.BlockLegend

    https://preview.redd.it/naezfadhl8241.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae4e221839f84199be44e72de2e7a89c8a10fa89

Similar to Boat/10000000 from the sliding-mechanic but billed as a "retro puzzle JRPG" with a bit of roguelike in there since you'll be dying and restarting over and over. Well worth the low-price imo and I enjoyed my time with it.

    Super Gridland

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doublespeakgames.gridland&hl=en_

    https://preview.redd.it/tqg3ht1kl8241.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=92bdad59cabd4b949a3066d8a291be637713efa8

Paid version of a free in-browser match game where you are matching different types of materials (bricks, wood, hay, etc.) in order to build up your town; there's also a day/night cycle with combat where you need to be very strategic in what you match in order to last through the night. Matching certain elements in this mode spawns enemies, which you need to match more and more swords/shields in order to last through - every enemy you kill moves the moon towards morning, so you can't just wait it out. Great, great game!

    Other Games:

    Gardenscapes / Homescapes / Wildscapes etc. - https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=6598096594674427568

Playtrix has the market cornered on these quest-based match-games that feel a bit too aggressive in the F2P mechanics for me, though I will admit to having played a good bit of Gardenscapes a couple years back.

    Jewels Star 1 / 2 / 3 - https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=ITREEGAMER

A real golden oldie, I played hours and hours of this on one of the first phones I owned. If you wanted absolute bare-bones stripped down matching, this series might be worth looking back on?

    Starbeard https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.LeviathanGames.StarBeard&hl=en_US

    https://preview.redd.it/8cyb7it9x8241.png?width=406&format=png&auto=webp&s=30e296cd8c6ba0e7ceba320c8b177812661cb697

Opinions on Eve: Echoes open beta

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 02:38 AM PST

I downloaded and played Eve Echoes for about two hours now. I like it. So far so good. Overall i'd say it is what Second Galaxy should have been. I never played the Original Eve Online, I know it is supposed to be this complex sandbox with a ton of skills. I can for sure say that Eve Echoes also has a ton of skills. I could queue five for now and I got preeeetty overwhelmed by the choices. Character creation is detailed. However, I'm still cautious bc of two things: 1) It is Netease. 2) Market is still not fully up.

    What do you think? Cheers.

    Best PvP games?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 11:02 AM PST

I recently got a phone actually capable of playing good games, I know there are the obvious PvP games like Clash Royale, Brawl Stars, DB Legends, etc... But I'm looking for something more particular.

Either a arena-fighter-like (Like Jump Force or Naruto: UNS4) game or something like that of Street Fighter, but faster, unlike the Street Fighter game that is on mobile.

    Any help is appreciated.

Why is there a stigma about gaming on smartphones?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 04:40 PM PST

I am a member of a lot of gaming groups on Facebook and we discuss games like Grand Theft Auto series, Final Fantasy, etc.

I always get deep into discussions but then inevitably someone will ask me what PC or console I game on. I tell them a smartphone and they immediately dismiss me, they say something like "that's not for REAL gamers!" or "real gamers only play on PC/XBOX/PlayStation".

Apparently even though I am playing the exact same game they are, because I am playing on a smartphone rather than a console I am not a real gamer! WTF!

Has anyone else got this attitude? Why do you think it exists?
