4 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 130)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 02:53 AM PST

Happy midway-through-December, fellow mobile gamers! :) And welcome back to this weekly tradition of highlighting the 4 most interesting mobile games I played this week.

This week, I'll be covering a fantasy RPG-themed Battle Royale, an old school Diablo-like dungeon crawler RPG indie game, a very polished merge idle game in the Cut the Rope universe, and a 2D sidescrolling tank shooter with singleplayer AND 1v1 and 2v2 multiplayer game-modes.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 130 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Here are the games:

AnimA ARPG [Game Size: 415 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Dungeon Crawler / Old School / Indie / Dark - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

AnimA is a bit of a hidden-gem indie dungeon-crawler that plays like an old school RPG and is set in a Diablo-like dark, gritty, fantasy underground.

What sets AnimA apart is its persistent world, which means once a dungeon has been cleared, monsters don't respawn. There's also no defined classes, which means we can use ranged, melee, and magic weapons at any time - although we do spend attribute points and upgrade abilities that naturally makes us proficient in one of those 3 weapon-types.

Combat feels great, although there IS a lot of running back and forth and kiting enemies involved - especially when it comes to the awesome boss battles.

There's a ton of loot too, with random attributes, all of which can be upgraded. But best of all, AnimA monetizes through a single $1 iAP to add extra inventory space, extra character slots, and a strong weapon.

The game's main downside is that the joystick control is a bit too sensitive, and there's no way to change the sensitivity. Apart from that, the game's almost perfect.

Frostfall [Game Size: 805 MB] (free)

Genre: Battle Royale / Fantasy / Action - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Frostfall is a unique 16-player Battle Royale set in a fantasy RPG universe, which means staves, boomerangs, and magic in combination with assault rifles.

The ability to equip 4 weapons at once, and the addition of movement-related "weapons", like a dash, temporary invisibility, and a temporary movement speed increase, makes the gameplay feel vastly different from other Battle Royale games.

Best of all, the game is 100% no-pay-to-win, which means only cosmetics are sold through iAPs, and there are no advertisements.

The controls are a bit lacking and the game could use a UI / graphics polish overhaul, all of which can easily be fixed through updates over time.

Om Nom: Merge [Total Game Size: 252 MB] (free)

Genre: Merge / Idle - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Idle

    tl;dr review:

Om Nom: Merge is Zeptolab's attempt at a merge idle game set in the Cut the Rope franchise - and it might just be the most polished merge idle game to date.

Every 30 seconds, we get a new creature, and once we have two of them, we can merge them to create a higher level creature. Deploying these creatures on the playing field earns us gold automatically, which we spend to buy creatures directly instead of having to wait 30 seconds.

Progression is fun and faster than the average idle game, but we are bombarded with options to watch ads for rewards, which might eventually alienate you from the game unless you don't mind watching ads.

Hills of Steel [Total Game Size: 144 MB] (free)

    Genre: Action / Shooter / 2D / Side-scroller / Tanks - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Hills of Steel is a 2D side-scrolling action tank game with both singleplayer and real-time 1v1 and 2v2 multiplayer game modes - or at least that's what the game wants us to think. Matchmaking takes just a few seconds, so it's unlikely we're fighting actual other players.

The core gameplay is still an enjoyable experience, however, and the physics-based combat ensures a bit of randomized fun due to the huge recoil from firing our cannon.

Winning rewards us with stars used to instantly unlock lootboxes that give us tank cards, cosmetics, and gold, which is used to unlock new tanks and level them up. All of this can be bought instantly through iAPs too, which means PvP isn't competitive.

The monetization won't annoy you if you stick to the singleplayer game-mode, but I AM missing a friend or guild system for friendly PvP battles.

Need some controller compatible games and controller suggestions for S8

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:35 AM PST

I'm going on a long backpacking trip and I can't bring my laptop.

I need some really good titles and a handheld controller suggestion for the Galaxy S8

I personally haven't been able to find any Android games even remotely enjoyable, maybe it's because I never used a controller. I always found them either to be too simple to be enjoyable or just to be pointless cash mining apps.

For a controller im looking for something that wraps around the phone and maybe connects to the USB port if possible, resembling a 360 controller. Bluetooth is ok, but it needs to be reliable

For games, something that is actually comparable to console titles. Needs to have bots or single player bc I won't have service. Something that would play like Nintendo switch. FPS like quake or halo, some good real time rpg that's not jrpg. Or good top down shooter, strategy, rpg games. Something that it actually entertaining and eats time on a plane or bus.

I understand that 99% free games are badically garbage designed to get money out of you somehow so I don't mind spending on good titles. Is there a way to search Google play store for controller compatible games? Also they need to work without an internet connection.

    Thanks for advice

Edit: I connected the PS4 controller and tried to play Shadowrun legends. It worked but it was complete shit. It was rendering fine but there was a 1 second lag from the input. Probably because there was so much data mining going on in the background that it was unplayable. This is the kind of game in trying to avoid. Data mining games that constantly need internet connection

    Durango Freemium?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:38 AM PST

    Hey

Just started playing Durango, only an hour in but really enjoying it. Just wondering if I'm going to get stung for IAPs down the line, or if it's not too bad? I though Nexon had a reputation for loads of IAPs but I may be wrong...?

[GAME] Hyperdrome: slot like racing game with Tron looking graphics and special abilities

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:21 AM PST

The other day I started playing this game:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.traviangames.ugpx

At the start you need to understand the pace of the race and where is important to look at in the screen. Once you get a hold of how it works it is just so much fun! You will race in a 2v2 slot kind of game, where you will need to through missiles, dodge them, plant mines and use other abilities to slow down your opponent and win races.

Levelling up is similar to Clash Royale, but the level of your abilities is not that decisive here. Your timing skills and learning how to counter things so you can use the best strategy will definitely bring you up in the ranks. After 2 weeks I did not need to spend a single dime and you feel you are going up in the ranks. Each new game is very different from the one before, and the whole game experience is very polished.

Try it and join the discord server to discuss furthermore, hope I see this game growing xD
