| Publishing your Android Library to Bintray for use in Gradle. Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:12 AM PST As a follow-up to a previous post on creating an open source Android Library, in this article we'll take a look at how to publish your library to JCenter. This is the final step and your library will be ready to be used in all gradle projects. https://ayusch.com/publishing-your-android-library-to-bintray-gradle/ Let me know your feedback on the article. 💙 [link] [comments] | ||

| Using nativescript has completely revolutionised my Android dev! Posted: 22 Dec 2019 07:13 AM PST So sure, it isn't 'pure', but as I look down and see the same questions, and articles on how to do relatively basic things because Android dev is that complicated, it makes me so happy that I can just code what I want and not spend a whole day learning how to make a recycler view list with pull to refresh and then another whole day on learning something else relatively basic. I'm fairly sure 90% of apps could be made using {N} or a similar alternative and make devs so much more happier if they can just get over their own inhibition about using such a workflow. | GooglePlay issue: "Metadata: First level links" Posted: 22 Dec 2019 03:21 AM PST So while trying to submit my app for google play store approval, It got rejected saying that im using first level links in my software that aren't appropriate " App: First level links The only two links I use in my game are:
So is twitter really not approved for E, E10+ rating or something or Im understanding something wrong? [link] [comments] | ||

| Best practices for getting and caching data from API? Posted: 22 Dec 2019 04:51 AM PST I'm trying my hand at Android app development for the first time (been coding for a long time though) and I've been trying and failing to find some recommendations on best practices for getting and caching data from an API. Is there an agreed upon way of doing this? I've been looking at stuff like BLoC and Redux but as far as I can tell, they don't have a way to handle external updates to your data (e.g., the user is connected elsewhere or some event outside the app changes the data stored by your API). To be super specific with an example, suppose my API is storing and retrieving a list of accounts for a user. Obviously I should cache that data in my app when I get the list of accounts. However, what am I supposed to do if the list of accounts gets updated in some way outside of this app instance (e.g., another device or some external event)? Or if my app wants to get a list of accounts, and I have old cached data, I think the way to go is to return the cached data and then update from the API when it's available but how do you actually do that in practice in a well architected manner? | Question: is it possible to create circle-cut shape with shadow? Posted: 22 Dec 2019 04:16 AM PST Suppose I want to do something like that: https://i.imgur.com/lpVdYB1.png I tried to use the SVG that was generated by the designer, but Android Studio removes it when converting. I also tried to set elevation but it didn't help. So, suppose I have this shape in SVG form (with or without the shadow) that will be converted to VectorDrawable, how can I set a shadow above it? Does Android have any way to set a mask of such a thing, and cast a shadow for it, perhaps? [link] [comments] | ||
| What do you guys do for screen size compatibility? Posted: 21 Dec 2019 02:14 PM PST This is my first native android app and up to a certain screen size my layouts work well. If the phone is too small though the layout all goes to hell, I'm planning to just make another layout for the smaller screen sizes. I think the images, buttons, text I imported into Android Studio are just too big for the smaller screens so I'm planning to make them smaller and import them for the smaller layout. For those of you experienced, do you have any tips, tricks, or advice for me? Thanks! Edit: I'm using Constraint Layout [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 21 Dec 2019 02:28 PM PST It won't be multiple views anymore, so how could it investigate the content of them, allowing to perform operations on them, etc? [link] [comments] | ||
| How would one create an app like Google Maps? Posted: 21 Dec 2019 03:10 PM PST I'm not talking about three satellite images and the accurate data they have, I wanna know how to code some lines as the streets with names over them on a plane that you can span and zoom in and out of, and possibly render some 3D objects on the plane. Where would one start? [link] [comments] | ||

| Is it possible to get the real screenshot of the device? Posted: 21 Dec 2019 08:02 AM PST Some devices have a notch, some have rounded corners, and some even both. Is it possible to get a screenshot of how things look like on the display, including those terrible cut outs ? I remember that on some beta version of Android Q, it was possible as the only way to take a screenshot. [link] [comments] | ||
| How long will it take you to recreate Tinder all by yourself Posted: 21 Dec 2019 10:26 PM PST Let's say you are a dev and you are familiar with tinder because you use it sometime. One day a time traveler send you to the past before tinder was created, how long will it take you to recreate the app alone? [link] [comments] | ||
| I only use pen and paper for my UI prototyping. I hate using software. Is this normal? Posted: 21 Dec 2019 11:08 PM PST I am still learning to develop Android apps, though I probably consider myself to be at an intermediate level now. I tried some of the UI prototyping tools out there, like Figma and Justinmind, but.....I just don't feel it. It's hard to describe, but I just don't like using them. My real affinity lies with pen and paper. I prefer to spend time cycling, get oxygen in my brain while at it, and then I relax at a couch at a resort hotel at nearby beach, facing the sea as I then bring out a notepad from inside my pocket and start doodling. I imagine what kind of mobile app or website I want to build as I close my eyes, let my imagination flow free and start drawing. Then once I got the prototype of what the app or website pages would look like, then I go back home and reproduce the images on Android Studio as closely and faithfully as possible. Is this a normal process for an Android developer? I am also thinking that if I branch out and do freelance I will need to show my clients UI prototypes, so would screenshots from Android Studio work fine enough in this case? [link] [comments] | ||
| Does anybody here use LottieFiles? Posted: 21 Dec 2019 02:36 PM PST I am very interest in the world of micro-interactions and I have been learning a lot about it. But as I am learning I am curious how developers actually utilize animations. Do you use LottieFiles for downloading animations? How do you translate an animation into code? [link] [comments] | ||

| Do you upload your assets/text to the app store via API or manually? Posted: 21 Dec 2019 10:23 AM PST I'm trying to figure out how I want to handle submitting our apps to various app stores. We haven't shipped an android app so curious about best practices here. I'm thinking of doing a CD setup where we test and then push automatically. I would configure the app store assets in a configuration file and then have them automatically updated. This way it does translation, all assets for all platforms, and has consistency between releases. Thoughts? [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 21 Dec 2019 05:35 PM PST As the title states, I have an idea for a twist on a journaling app that people can use to log their thoughts I guess. How would I go about beginning to even make something like this? I have no experience so this entire thing is a bit daunting, however I really want to make this because I think it'll be fun and could be helpful. Thanks for the advice! [link] [comments] |
