Note 1. Join our IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

I don't get why this sub has such an aversion for any form screen intrusion.

I've even seen people advocating for the removal of the front facing camera. How can you support the removal of the front facing camera but not the headphone jack? Makes no sense to me.

Chrome and current state of scrolling

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 03:18 PM PST

I feel strongly that Google needs to really improve scrolling on Chrome. On my current Pixel 4 XL on JavaScript heavy sites, especially on sites with embedded videos or ads, touch scrolling stutters way too much. As an example, go to engadget.com and scroll to the bottom. When you get to the embedded video at the bottom, Chrome starts to stutter and it looks especially bad on a 90hz display. Even when I swipe from the home screen to go left to the Google feed, you can see it scroll stuttering when a video starts and stops (autoplay on Wi-Fi). I have not seen these types of scrolling stutters on an iPhone. Google needs to do something to ensure touch scrolling remains nice and smooth without frame drops. I have seen the exact same behavior in other flagship phones like the S10+, Note 10+ and OnePlus 7 Pro.

I am not a fan of AR but I absolutely love Google Lens!

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 02:41 PM PST

I of course speak from a personal point of view, but I am not a big fan of AR or VR, to me pretty much all AR or VR apps are useless and I don't really like how much effort Google and Apple are putting into making really what I feel like useless apps that will be used once and never again by most. I've tried a few measuring apps, but when it's anything serious I always use a physical measuring tape. I've also tried some pointless "place this cute creature on the table" apps and uninstalled them in probably under 10 minutes.

However, Google Lens is an exception to that. I absolutely love it! And I use it very often. I use it to quickly transfer sites from my PC to my phone (I know Chrome has a new Send feature now) by generating a QR code and reading it using Google Lens. I've used it many times for recognizing animals, clothes, buildings, and for quickly translating text from various languages to English in real time - This is such an amazing feature!

The other day I was going through 80s and 90s music nostalgia on YouTube and Aqua's Barbie Girl came on (yea, yea). When the music video starts there is some writing in what appears to be Japanese. I got curious whether it actually said something or was it some made up scribble. I so pulled up Google Lens and was able to translate it (it says "Presented in Aquascope" in Japanese). And then it hit me just how amazing modern technology is. When that song came out, I would not have been able to translate that text for weeks if I wanted to!

I have used Google Lens to recognize various species of birds and dogs. Some blogger on YouTube had a cool looking dog that I didn't know a breed of... Google Lens. Done!

I hope Google keeps developing this great app further. For me, it's the only AR app that is useful and it's very useful. I love that it's integrated into Google Camera so it's always "there".

I am usually apprehensive of sharing my data with Google or other services, but Google Lens (and Google Maps), I am freely willing to send whatever to their servers so they can improve their services, it's just amazing!
