Which device to get (Mi Box S vs. Fire TV Stick 4K)?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 04:44 AM PST

Not sure if people get upset about these kind of questions here but here goes: I am currently living in Portugal and have looked at the following devices (idk anything about other similarly priced devices, but these seem to be the most popular):

    1. Mi Box S - €60
    2. Fire TV Stick 4K - €60

Obviously the Shield is much more expensive (€160) than the other two options so I'm probably not going to get it. I've looked at reviews about the two and read threads on here and it seems to be split 50/50 with half saying the Mi Box S is shit, while the Fire TV Stick is great (and vice versa). I think there is a difference in price between the two / they are cheaper in the US, but obviously here they aren't. I've also read about a potentially new Mi Box coming out soon, but that could be complete bullshit.

Anyway, my girlfriend and I would like to use either for the following:

    • Netflix
    • YouTube
    • BBC iPlayer (with proxy obviously)
    • Playing torrented media (is this even possible -- could buy external HDD or connect laptop I guess?)

Anything else is a bonus: for example, we don't have or use Amazon Prime, but I guess it's possible we might get it in the future, and who really games on it honestly? Either way, which one do you guys think is best to get?

How can I get Xiaomi to fix stuff on their new 4S Android TV

    Posted: 13 Nov 2019 04:56 AM PST

I want to at least give them feedback somehow because there currently are a lot of things wrong with it and a lot of things that should be improved (even subtitles don't work on their native Mediaplayer)

So yeah, how can I have an impact as right now I don't even know where I can send some feedback that'll be looked at.

The 4S TV (55") is only available in Europe afaik

    Disney+ works on Razer Forge!

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 09:19 AM PST

I was very disappointed that my Toshiba TV's built in Chromecast did not support Disney+, even though Chromecasts are supposed to work. So with very little hope, I dusted off my Forge TV earlier, which can't even run Netflix, and to my surprise I was able to directly install the Disney+ app from the Play Store and I can even cast to it like a Chromecast (which again doesn't work with Netflix)!

Unfortunately it's only in 1080p, but I'll take what i can for now...

    What's the keyboard problem??

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 04:36 PM PST

When I put apps on my Android TV, it asks for me to use the Keyboard on my mobile device. Sure, I use the Android TV remote control app, same icon, it says it connects, etc... But when i try type, nothing ever works! I can't access my accounts or anything, what am I doing wrong?

Sony XBR850C sometimes crashes my ethernet network

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 01:59 PM PST

People in the house complain about no Internet and I can confirm that I can't ping anything on my network when it happens but rebooting the TV makes it go away. I initially thought it was the switch, but replacing it didn't help. The only thing that reliably works is rebooting the TV.

I like the picture, but between this networking issue and what feels like an incredibly underpowered UI, I wish I had bought another TV.

    Help with HDMI connections

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 08:42 AM PST

Edit: I turned off surround sound on the Wii u and switched to stereo. Works properly now. Thanks all.

I just purchased a new LG 65" UHD TV from Costco ($499.99!). I'm having trouble connecting my shield, wii u, and Samsung soundbar to all work correctly. You guys are pretty smart, so maybe someone can figure out what's wrong.

    First try:

    1. I connected the Shield HDMI OUT to the soundbar HDMI-IN and connected the soundbar HDMI-OUT-ARC to the HDMI-2-ARC on the back of the TV.
    2. Then I connected the Wii U HDMI to the HDMI-1on the back of the TV.
    3. The shield and soundbar worked fine (selected HDMI-2 from the TV) and I could control them both with the the LG magic remote or with the shield remote.
    4. Switch the input to HDMI-1 and the Wii U picture comes up, but no sound from either the soundbar or the TV speakers.

So I did a little research on what ARC is, so I re-wired it:

    Second try:

    1. Connected the Shield HDMI OUT to the HDMI-1 on the back of the TV
    2. Connected the TV HDMI-2-ARC on the back of the TV to the HDMI-OUT-ARC on the sound bar.
    3. Connected the Wii U HDMI OUT to the HDMI-3 on the back of the TV
    4. So if I understand correctly the signals come in to the TV via HDMI and the TV sends the audio to the soundbar via the HDMI-ARC... correct?
    5. The Shield again works properly. When I turn it on the soundbar shows TV-ARC on the small display.
    6. Still, no audio from the Wii U when I switch to HDMI-3. No sound from the soundbar, nor the TV speakers.

I'm wondering if this is a CEC setup issue, or some other setting I missed in the TV or soundbar. Anyone have any ideas?

    Phillips Android TV freezing issue

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 03:35 PM PST

Hello guys, my Phillips pus7303/12 freezes when closing games on ps4, all I can see is black screen and it does not respond to remote comands. It needs to be unpluged from socket to restart itself and then everyrhing is fine. Do you have any advice how to fix it myself, did anybody else had similar problem. It is under warranty, and I am having second thoughts on returning it because I got a pretty good price on it.

X88 Pro android Tv box not recognising USB controller HELP

    Posted: 12 Nov 2019 04:04 PM PST

Hi guys hopefully this is the right place to post.

Picked up an android TV box today, only a cheap one to test it out, maybe I should have spent more given the issues I'm having 😂

It says it supports mouse and keyboard via USB, so I presumed it would support a gaming controller via USB too? I've tired a normal Bluetooth gamepad connected up by USB and I've tried my switch Pro Controller via USB too. The orange recharging light comes on my switch controller but my android Tv box doesn't let me use it for anything, navigation or gaming.

Any ideas why is it not being recognised?
