Nvidia shield consumes 155GB in less than 21 hours

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 05:57 AM PST

We normally watch Stan (Aussie streaming service) on our Nvidia Shield TV. Yesterday evening, as usually, we watched a couple of episodes of our favourite show and then we turned the Nvidia Shield TV off. I work from home so I haven't noticed anything unusual about the device today. My TV was off for the entire day. Around 4 pm I went for a jog and came back home around 5:40 pm. When I walked in I found the TV on - it must have been triggered by the Nvidia Shield TV, but how? The Stan app was on but nothing was playing. Soon after I have received a message from Optus (mobile operator) that I used up 85% of my mobile home broadband internet allowance (we are on a 500 GB Optus 4G home broadband). I was shocked as we normally finish every month at around 350 Gb max. I immediately logged into my Asus router to check what app/device used up all this precious data. The statistics section revealed a whopping 155 GB of data downloaded through the Nvidia Shield TV since 8 pm last night. The app responsible for this huge data usage is called Akamai.net I googled this immediately and I found out that Stan uses Akamai. Therefore I am suspecting that the Stan app has malfunctionedv and somehow it streamed and downloaded over 155 GB within less than 24 hours (roughly 7 GB per hour) despite no movies/shows played. According to Stan's website, streaming UHD equals to roughly 7GB per hour. The thing is we don't even have an UHD TV. Not only I run out of my monthly internet allowance but I am worried if I should continue on using the app on the device or just cancel the service as I would not like this to happen again. Did anyone ever experienced similar?

exFAT USB drive for Media offline download on Xiaomi Mi Box S

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 07:24 AM PST

Hello Reddit I've been looking at getting a USB drive for downloading media to from the likes of YouTube, Netflix and Disney for offline viewing so I won't be relient on streaming over iffy hotel WiFi if I decided to take it on an upcoming trip. Is the Mi Box S compatible with larger 64GB exFAT drives? Or would it be better to stick with a FAT formatted 32GB drive? Any drive recommendations? Thanks

Can I manually make a channel for an app on home screen?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 03:24 PM PST

Hi, 2017 NVIDIA Shield running 8.0.1 I have the android TV app 10 Play (it's an Aussie TV network), and it doesn't have a channel available to add to the homescreen. Is there a way to manually make and add a channel for an app?

Note: Not talking about scrolling to the bottom, selecting manage channels and then adding it from the sidebar, I'm saying there is no channel option for 10 Play on that list.

Fire TV Stick vs Mi Box S for IPTV only

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 07:40 PM PST

I can get both for the same price, it would be installed on my parent's tv to basically only watch IPTV, so wich one don't lag while playing it?

I saw somewhere that Mi Box S controller looks cheap compared to Fire Tv one, is that true?

Can your Android TV device play Widevine videos in Kodi v18.x?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2019 01:30 AM PST

Kodi v18.x can now play Widevine encrypted streams which has opened up a world of add-ons that can LEGALLY play a number of streaming internet videos, such as those from my local sports TV provider which is great considering they do not provide a native Android TV app. However, it appears that my TV (Sony X950G) is just not capable of playing these streams; at least via Kodi. The result is regular video compression artifacts with random pixelated frames throughout playback. There should be no reason why the Mediatek SoC is not perfectly capable of decrypting these streams and playing them, but it appears that there is an issue with Widevine playback. This could be a broader "Android" issue too, since even my phone (Galaxy S10) shows similar artifacts, albeit to a lesser extent. Kodi on PC exhibits no such issues whatsoever and the streams play flawlessly.

I'd love to hear from more Android TV users to see whether they experience the same thing or not. If you feel like trying this, please report back with your findings.

Steps:Create a file called test.strm and paste the following contents into it:

    #KODIPROP:inputstreamaddon=inputstream.adaptive #KODIPROP:inputstream.adaptive.license_type=com.widevine.alpha #KODIPROP:inputstream.adaptive.license_key=https://proxy.uat.widevine.com/proxy?video_id=48fcc369939ac96c&provider=widevine_test||R{SSM}| #KODIPROP:inputstream.adaptive.manifest_type=mpd https://storage.googleapis.com/wvmedia/cenc/h264/tears/tears.mpd

Copy the file to a flash drive, or to your TV directly.Add a "Video source" to Kodi, pointing to the location of the file and load it.

If you did everything correctly, Kodi should load a free DRM-protected video called Tears of Steel. Let it play for a few minutes and look out for blocky artifacts on-screen.

    Thanks in advance!

I recently purchased a mi box s, when turning it on and switching to correct hdmi source, it keeps saying no signal on the screen. Have tried various hdmi cables and ports on tv and it's still the same. Any help would be appreciated.
