Adding bluetooth to a non BT Smart TV

    Posted: 19 Nov 2019 05:45 AM PST

I have a Blaupunkt 4K 'Smart' TV with android 6.0 on it , some sort of customized version of android with narrowed down settings. It does not come with built in Bluetooth settings or functionality.

I bought a USB to Bluetooth external transceiver, connected to the TV's USB port but no way to enter the settings of Bluetooth as such item does not exist under the Settings menu.
Is it possible to add it somehow , alternatively, any android app to access BT settings ?
The TV's android is not rooted, I tried my luck with one random chineese rooting app but no avail. No idea how to root it to change stuff 'under the hood'.

Have you seen this little window?

Have you seen this little window?

Have you ever seen this little window pop up after an app crashes?:

    https://preview.redd.it/hgilthee2kz31.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d1ead1e915f4bec84544b40360894ef71f64e49

It used to appear back in marshmallow on my Android TV device (original Xiaomi Mi Box) but then it disappeared when Oreo arrived.

Turns out Android Developers decided to TURN IT OFF BY DEFAULT starting with Android 9 (although I didn't see it on Oreo) because according to them "crashing the app instead of displaying an ANR dialog will encourage developers to fix whatever issue is causing the crash..." say what!?. Fortunately it can be turned ON inside Developers Options.

Here is the Google I/O 2018 session where they explain this bad decision:

Protips: a fresh look at advanced topics for Android experts (Google I/O '18)

If you really want your apps to be fixed by the developer when they crash, you should turn that option ON and send as many reports or feedback as you can, I know it works, trust me.

Go to Developer Options and turn ON "Show background ANRs" as you can see in this screenshot:

After I turned that ON, I noticed the "Android TV Core Services" app crashed on Android 9 beta for the Mi Box S after waking up the device from standby and the first thing that appeared on my TV screen was the little window so I obviously sent the report and I'll be sending more until they fix the issue.

    You're welcome.

I wonder if I can use a multi-cable hub to connect all cables to Xiaomi TV Box S. I have 2x HDMI cables, Ethernet cable, an external storage, and keyboard and mouse. Can all that work smoothly together? Thanks.

Audio drop outs/skips with Dolby Digital

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 12:08 PM PST

    Hi

I have isolated my audio issue to my TV, a Philips P49PUS7502/12, and I suspect it being some sort of Android TV update causing the problems.

I have a Sonos Playbar connected through optical out from my TV. The Playbar has no issues playing surround audio from other sources, but when the TV plays an AC3/Dolby Digital 5.1 movie (Netflix, HBO, broadcast) it has intermittent audio drops for about 0.5-1 seconds every once in a while. It's becoming extremely annoying but if I do a complete reinstall of the TV, the issue disappear for some time until "something" happens and the problem returns.

The problem started about 14 days ago and I cannot figure out what has happened, which is why I think it might have been an update to some Android component.

Does anybody have an idea of what I can try to eliminate the problem?

I know switching to stereo output makes the problem go away, but I don't want to do that of course.

I've tried all sorts of settings related to the picture modes since it might be something about the audio not syncing correctly with the picture, but I cannot tell if it makes any difference, but the problem remains.

I've tried uninstalling apps, disabling services, connecting with ADB to uninstall and disable services. Nothing makes the issue go away.

The strange thing is that it works for a while and then returns, so my guess is it is some service or app not behaving as it should.

Doing logcat from ADB shows something about thread starvation, but I don't know if that's related.

I also know it's not my Sonos system as it works perfectly from other sources and also from the TV for about a day or so before it starts acting up again.

Anyway, I would love to get some input on what to try.

    Thanks!
