Is it possible to dual boot two system images with the Pixel 2 XL?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 04:12 AM PST

I've read it's possible but I tried manually flashing boot, system and vendor to the inactive slot and switching it manually but it will not boot on that slot.

I was trying to install an unmodified stock image to see if some issues I'm having are resolved before I try a complete reset.

Rcs messaging encryption and wifi, does the wifi owner see unencrypted text?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 11:57 AM PST

So I have the new chat features, I was on wifi without a vpn and received a text from an iPhone. I know this is an sms text since it isn't using rcs. I am not sure how this all works though. Is the wifi downloading these messages? Are they unencrypted? If I send a reply would the wifi provider see plain text? I see over and over that it's supposed to be encrypted in transit but who can see it before hand if using WiFi? Does rcs push all messages over WiFi including sms now? How does this all work and how vulnerable is it to my privacy?

Best antenna for rural, wooded area with weak signal. Will modem's Carrier Aggregation factor make a difference?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 02:29 AM PST

I'm looking at the Moto z4 and Google Pixel 3 or 3 XL to replace my Moto X Pure which I have been using out here in the woods for the past two years.

The z4 has a snapdragon 675 with an x12 modem (category 12 downlink, 3x20 MHz carrier aggregation).

The Pixel 3 has a snapdragon 845 with an x20 modem (category 18 downlink, 5x20 MHz carrier aggregation.)

    https://www.qualcomm.com/snapdragon/modems/comparison

I use my current phone tethered to my PC for internet (cable/fiber is unavailable and satellite sucks), I've been doing this successfully for years now, but my speeds max out at about 5mbps down (sometimes up to 20mbps very late at night/early morning).

I use a WeBoost 4g signal booster installed on my house, it really helped boost the signal when I first installed it, but over time it seems like either my moto x's antenna is getting weaker or something's going on with the towers around me, sometimes I can barely get 1mbps, which will barely load a 240p youtube clip.

My question is about "carrier aggregation", will the higher end snapdragon modem, the x20 on the 845 (pixel 3) help grab the weak signals out where I live better than the x12 on the 675 (moto z4)?

I've done my research but can't wrap my head around the term, I guess it has something to do with the modem being able to access multiple signals at the same time, bundling them together for a better overall signal (I might have this totally wrong, I blame the internet and my tired brain).

In any case, I've always loved my motorola phones, but would consider switching to the pixel if it would actually yield a stronger, faster signal.

The difference in cpu/gpu speed doesn't matter much to me, the price is similar, I'd rather stick with the motorola and pick up a moto mod battery pack/take advantage of the 3.5mm audio jack it has and the pixel doesn't. But I'll gladly switch for a bump in speed.

Anyone out there fluent in cell networks and could shine some light on this for me?

Google play services with battery optimization.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:38 AM PST

I've been checking the battery consuption on my device and I have noticed that google play services usually cosumes a lot of battery. In android there's an option, in privacy, that allows you to optimize the battery usage of every app, and I was wondering if there is any disatvantage in optimizing this service with that option or if I shouldn't do that. Thanks in advance.

Do you charge your new phone fully before booting it up?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

I used to do this whenever getting a new phone or device. I'll be opening up my Pixel 4 XL shortly and am curious whether this practice is still advised.

We all know that the Galaxy Fold is out and more are following. This is my view of the market. I think Folding phones will only replace tablets and not normal smartphones. Whats your thoughts? I would love to hear what everyone has to say.

Will very occasionally work, same deal on 2g, 3g, 4g, have restarted phone, turned everything off but data, turned data off. Am well within data limit and my plan does not expire until next month. Other people on the same carrier across Android and iOS can all use data. Has been happening for a week now.

Question about ads we see in games for other games.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 11:08 AM PST

Question about ads for android games and how they show puzzle game play not in the game?

So I've been noticing this a lot lately where when you watch ads for games they almost all show where someone is trapped or needs help doing something and you have to figure out the right course of action.

Some of them look really good and so I tried a few of the games. It turns out the advertising had nothing to do with the game. Isn't there some "truth in advertising" rule here? And more importantly are there any games like what the ads are showing?

I can't be the only one that's noticed this?

I need help getting a widget for a camera

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:35 AM PST

I recently purchased a few Neos SmartCams for my smart home. All of my lights and cameras are controlled by Alexa and phone. I downloaded a launcher to make everything look nice and have all the light controls on the homepage as widgets. However, I want my camera feed to be displayed on the home page as a widget that takes up a few spaces. This is because I don't want to keep having to click into the app for checking the cameras, and it would look much nicer to have a camera feed next to buttons for my lights. Can you point me in the right direction?

Need help with a technical problem

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:54 AM PST

My phone turns off and on when it locks for some reason....

Before this happened I could lock the phone (and make the screen dark) by pressing the turn off button on the phone (and it would turn off if I held in the button). Now when I try to lock it by pressing the button, nothing happens. If I hold in the button to try to turn it off nothing happens.

If I go to settings --> screen and change sleepmode to after 15 seconds of inactivity my phone literally just shuts down and restarts. If I continue to not do anything it just continues shutting down and restarting until out of battery. If I go to settings --> security, there doesn't seem to be many options there either...If I go to settings-->security --> screenlock, it just gives 5 possible ways of unlocking the phone, so this is not it either...My phone is 5+ years old btw. No clue about the model, it says ZTE at the back of it

Update: So if I have my charger plugged in the screen on the phone goes black and locks. (but it doesn't turn off and restart YAY!)I can still not unlock it with the button on the phone (that I used to use though). I can still not turn it off, or do anything. I can't even get light on the phone while the charger is plugged in, it's just completely black. However, if I plug out the charger the phone lights up and I'm randomly able to unlock it....

Google Assistant not available anymore in my language

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 03:48 AM PST

I was using my phone normally as all of a sudden I got a notification that the Google assistant is not available anymore for the language/region "English (Germany)".

The assistant is still available for German (Germany) or English (US).

I cannot find any information about this on the internet so I am not sure if this is because of the configuration of my phone or a general thing.

Is there any way to only change to something that is like English (Germany), i.e. English language but German dates/metrics etc.? Or maybe is it possible to only set the assistants language to English (US) (i.e. not the whole system)?

How to turn off mobile data and still get service?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:41 AM PST

    Hi,

I recently got a new phone with android 10 and I want to turn off mobile data so I can't access the internet while still getting signal for calls. This is so I don't accidentally use data. But when I turn off mobile data the triangle has a x and I assume I can't make calls. When mobile data is on it says 4G and that triangle and it allows me to use the internet.

On my old phone (android 5) I'm able to specifically turn on mobile data and still maintain signal for calls.

Sorry if I'm not making sense.

    Suggested Apps Problem

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:16 AM PST

Yesterday my homescreen glitched and all the apps were just on the left side of the screen. I restarted my phone and it fixed that problem but now I only see 4 apps instead of 5 in the suggested apps. Is there a way to fix this without a factory reset?

Cannot access google assistant using button on headphones

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 08:57 AM PST

I just got a oneplus 7t and I am working on getting the settings to everything carried over. On my Pixel 2 I was able to use my Sony WH-CH700N headphone's play/activate assistant button on the lock screen, but on my new oneplus I keep getting this message.

"Use the Google Assistant with a headset. When the phone is locked you can use your voice to talk to the Google Assistant with a headset"

When I click on the notification it just prompts me to unlock and then opens my phone.

Assistant does work when the phone is unlocked and I push and hold the button and I can use "OK Google" to unlock phone on lock screen just not the button.

How do I enable Google assistant to activate on lock screen using the button?

    Things I have done:

    • updated phone os
    • updated headphones firmwear
    • restarted phone and headphonse
    • unpaired and then repaired
    • Enabled lock screen notifications
    • Added my headphones as a "Smart Lock Trusted Device"
    • downloaded the Sony app
    • paired via bluetooth
    • turned on all bluetooth settings for headphones

Phone goes from snappy to unbearably slow when out and about using glympse. Help would be great!

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 04:42 AM PST

So this is a weird one, i have a Xiaomi Note 5 pro, its been a great phone, runs MIUI 11.0.3.0 and android is 9 PKQ1.180904.001 if that makes sense to you guys.

Here is what happens, if im say listening to a podcast and then send a Glympse to a friend, thats an app that will send your location and they can watch as you move, uses some sort of map and sends location. If then i go to say play some music the phone will crawl, im talking 10 seconds between touching the screen and it registering.....

I just replaced my SD card as i thought that might be the issue as i had an old SD card in there, got a nice fast 128gb card.

I keep all my podcasts and music on the SD card.

It really is only when Glympse is running from what i have noticed. The ONLY way to get it back to normal is open up the task manager thing and clicking the X which closes background apps and frees memory, even with glympse running after that its back to snappy.

    Any ideas?

How to determine the cause for an unexpected phone shutdown?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 04:38 AM PST

Hi all. I have Nokia 8.1 for a few months now. Updated to Android 10 immediately and it has been rock stable. Until today.

At about 11am I heard an incoming message notification but was busy and decided to look at it later.

At 11:55am I picked the phone but could not wake it up - tapping didn't work, fingerprint didn't work. Black screen. So I long-pressed the power button and it booted up without any problems. Battery over 55%.

It is working fine since but I'm somewhat concerned about the issue.

I collected a zip log file through "adb bugreport" command.

As I understand, it's tricky to find the cause after the reboot because all log files are generated fresh after boot. I looked in \FS\data\tombstones folders and found three records there, all complaining about the following issue:

signal 6 (SIGABRT), code -1 (SI_QUEUE), fault addr -------- Abort message: 'FORTIFY: %n not allowed on Android'

But they are almost a month old and I don't remember anything weird happening at that time; except maybe some Android system update and manual reboot.

Is there any place in that log zip or somewhere else on the device (without root) where I could find some info about what happened right before the unexpected shutdown? Kernel panics? Crashes?

Any way to bind screen button to keyboard?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 07:39 AM PST

Hi, is there a way to bind the screen buttons (in a game for exemple, like the on screen jump button) to a physical key from usb keyboard?

Are there any app that let me do that? An app where you can bind while you are in the game just like you can in pc android emulators
