Linux Deploy on Android (when you can't find a Raspberry Pi)

    Posted: 30 May 2022 09:02 AM PDT

Linux Deploy (Chroot Linux on rooted Android device) can serve as a substutute in many projects where you need a Raspberry Pi, but one can't be found due to current supply chain shortages.

You will encounter diferences in Linux Deploy that prevent many installer scripts from running un-modified. The biggest issue I've run into is the lack of SystemD in Linux Deploy. This can be resolved with a package called systemd-shim from the Devuan project, which allows use of SystemD commands on systems with a SysV Init system.

To help others get their projects started, I have uploaded a Debian 11 image for Linux Deploy that includes systemd-shim and other fix-ups so it behaves more like Debian on a 'real' device. For example, projects like NextCloud and Pi-hole can run on Linux Deploy when using this image.

    QuickStart Images for Linux Deploy

    debian.tgz

    • Debian 11 (Bullseye) minimal image
    • uname shim to hide reporting aarch64 when running 32-bit distros
    • Includes systemd-shim as many installers expect a working systemctl
    • Dropbear SSHd listening on port 22022

    ncd12.tgz

    • Lightly-forked edition of NextCloudPi
    • Video of the deployment at work
    • When the Linux container is created NextCloudPi provisions automatically via install.sh
    • Idential otherwise to debian.tgz above

Android really needs to implement something like Apple Shortcuts (and Homekit intergration) on Google Home.

    Posted: 30 May 2022 08:47 AM PDT

I'm a full Android (Pixel 5, ftw) user, and since getting a Macbook and a iPad for the first time I discovered the wonders of Apple Shortcuts - although it isn't perfect, it's an amazing app to create really cool automations, add that to Homekit and you can set up awesome automations at home that really connects all my smart home devices and my gadgets.

I just created a really cool automation that turns my lights on when I plug my Mac on my external displays, and also can set up my entire work setup.

Here's the sad part : I will never switch to iOS, for the reasons all Android users know and I feel that Google is really lacking with all of this automations stuff, Google Home is really basic. And it's infuriating because I think that Google could just pull it off like Apple but they're not caring. Here's a couple of things I liked Google Home did :

    • Create automations based on the state of the phone (example : when the Phone starts to charge, turn on Do Not Disturb and turn all the lights off).
    • Support for motion, vibration, light and temperature sensors.
    • Allow for automations to start with an NFC tag tap.
    • Something like Apple Home Key for smart locks.

Basically all the stuff Apple Shortcuts/Homekit already allow. Since Apple will never let those out of their umbrella, I really fell that Google should really put some effort into making automations better and give us the ultimate solution for connect all our smart devices together.

So, what are your toughts about this? What would you add? Do you feel the same way?

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.
