My review of the OnePlus 10 Pro after a month of ownership

    Posted: 23 May 2022 02:19 PM PDT

Tldr: They got rid of macro mode, lowered the storage, broke my volume buttons and didn't give the US the international 100w charger. Luckily the it looks cool, is competitively priced and has a bigger battery.

Context: I'm a longtime OnePlus fan. Phones I've had: Nexus 5, LG G3, OnePlus 3T, 6T, 7T, 9. I don't buy new phones but I recently won the $700+ voucher from OnePlus's latest giveaway so I pulled the trigger

Screen: 5/5 This is my first Pro model. I'm cheap and was wary of the curved glass due to its increased fragility. Now that I have it I really like it. Rolling your fingers in the edges feels fantastic. It also makes the phone look much less industrial. I'm now an advocate of the curved screen. The 10 Pro has a higher pixel density than the 9. I can't tell. It also has some feature where the refresh rate is variable to save battery. Don't notice that either. 120hz is awesome as always. The high refresh rate and low price of this phone are what keep me from switching to iPhone

Storage: smd/5 Inb4 128gb sucks. Yes, it does. I can see this being a deal breaker for a lot of people. 128 isn't luxurious, I shouldn't have to be restrained like this. I bought a used 9 Pro a week prior but the screen had some serious tint so I sold it. If that phone had a good screen I wouldn't have upgraded to the 10 pro, even with the crazy coupon.

Camera: 2/5 Every OnePlus I've ever had has a terrible depth of field. See picture. For close images the center is clear but everything else gets blurry. This only occurs with the main camera and goes away if you switch to a zoomed lens. Maybe I'm an idiot. Please lmk. It's the most annoying part of owning a OnePlus. My 9 had a macro mode, it was pretty awesome. The OnePlus 10 Pro does not have a macro mode. This makes the camera harder to use and limits functionality for less knowledgeable users. (Pro tip, switch to the zoom lens for close up photos.) I don't appreciate the downgrade. Picture quality is up but that is to be expected.

Battery: 5/5 I love charging my phone to full in a half hour. I flex on my friends whenever I can. That said why didn't America get the 100w charger that Asia got? Despite feeling jipped this phone has some of the best battery performance on the market. This 5000 mah battery is awesome. The best ever. Very happy with my battery life and fast charging

Construction: 3/5 My 🤬 volume buttons are broken. They don't click and require hard pressure to press. When I get back from vacation I'm sending the phone in to get fixed under warranty. The ringer slider requires around twice as much pressure to slide as it did on the 9. An unnecessary change, I'm not a fan. I like that the cameras look obnoxiously large due to their bezels. I'm a fan of gaudy showmanship in moderation and on a phone the camera is the place to do it. It's really the only identifying feature phones have now. I'm glad that OnePlus didn't waste the opportunity to show off. My dad's Samsung flips cameras are less than half the size and I do look down on him for it lmao. They moved the fingerprint reader up a bit. I'm a fan. If my volume buttons worked properly this would be a 5/5

Ui: 5/5 the OnePlus ui continues to be my absolute favorite. The perfect middle ground between the simplicity of the Pixel and the feature packed cacophony of the Galaxys.

Price: I paid $178 because I won an $800 coupon. $900 is the MSRP but no one will ever pay that price. When I got the phone they were giving away OnePlus Z buds 2. Then they were giving away the OnePlus watch with purchase. Now they'll take $100 if you join their rewards program. At $800 this is the best phone you can get. Pixel 6 pro is having various issues. Galaxy's are insufferable due to design and software. iPhone doesn't have 120hz or fast charging. This is imo the best phone you can get.

Conclusion: The 10 pro is my favorite phone on the market. Premium enough to be high end but not enough to be expensive, experimental and buggy. When comparing this phone to the rest of the market the story is awesome. However when you look at the OnePlus storyline you scratch your head. This phone isn't an upgrade from the 9 Pro. Why did they downgrade the storage and not include the 100w charger? I'm hoping this is a temporary lapse due to Covid/supply chain issues.
