Master and Atmos in Tidal don't work with Google TV

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 09:55 PM PST

I have recently upgraded to an Atmos setup and I also upgraded my Tidal to play Atmos content and for some reason Master quality and Atmos wont play. It says "Your Device Is Not Able To Play This Item" for Master quality content and says "Playing in Stereo, This Device is not capable of playing Dolby Atmos content" when I try to play Atmos content. I have the Chromecast with Google TV plugged directly to my Sony receiver, I figured it my fix the problem instead of having it plugged in the TV and going trough eArc, but same problem. Any ideas on how to fix or is it a Google TV or Tidal Thing?

Mi TV Stick & surround sound

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 07:53 AM PST

So I have an older Sony AV receiver (STR-KG800) with a Mi TV Stick hooked up directly to its HDMI-port, and another HDMI cable connecting the receiver and TV.

I've always been able to get 5.1 sound with other devices (gaming consoles, DVD players etc.) using this connection method, but for some reason the TV Stick only produces 2.0 sound, regardless of which app I'm running. I've tried fiddling with every setting possible, both on the receiver and the Stick, but nothing has worked so far. Funny thing is, when I use the built-in Chromecast on the Stick, it's suddenly able to produce 5.1 sound without a glitch.

I've just about given up on a solution, but if anyone out there might know a fix, I'm all ears!

I have a TiVo and I'm wondering if there's any kind of Auto Volume Leveling or SOMETHING to make the volume more stable at a certain volume.

    Disable Android TV Tuner

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 11:17 AM PST

Hi is there a custom fw or another way to turn off the tuner of my TV? I want this as I can then refuse to pay for government funded tv, because im not watching it anyway. People here are giving their tvs to some services, where they solder out the tuner, but I thought maybe there is a firmware way or even a option? Thank you for reading

Chromecast with Google TV or embedded Google TV on the TV?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 01:31 AM PST

    Hi

I'm looking for a new TV and I really want Google TV on it. I was aiming for a Sony Bravia with embedded Google TV. But a friend told to go for another brand (cheaper but same the image quality), and buy the chromecast with Google TV.

He says that the experience is going to be the same. Same interface, apps, power for running those apps, better maintenance directly from Google (and no waiting for Sony to prepare the updates), etc, and save some extra bucks.

Any experiences on this? Thanks in advance.

Is Android TV still worth it in 2022 or should I just move on to Google TV

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 12:56 PM PST

I have a CCwGTV plugged into my Roku smart TV in my bedroom and it's made a world's difference. I first got the Roku smart TV in June 2020 (before CCwGTV was even announced) but I still had trouble finding content to watch. When I got the Chromecast on release day (mid-October in Canada) it changed the game for me. I loved how it gave me personalized recommendations for things to watch, something that I didn't find much with Roku. It's actually the very thing that drove me to sign up for streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+. I especially love the watchlist feature, which really helps save stuff I like.

I'm planning on getting a new 65 inch TV for my living room. The one I'm eying specifically is the Hisense U6G (aka U68G in here in Canada). It runs the latest version of Android TV, which seems to resemble Google TV a lot more. This TV in particular has all the image quality and specs and features I want for my desired budget which is $1000 CAD and this one is currently $950 CAD.

I have heard that Hisense is coming out with new TVs that have Google TV, one of which is the U6H, a direct upgrade from the U6G I mentioned earlier. I'm kinda conflicted on whether I should wait until June-July or just bite the bullet and get the current U6G.

But my dilemma is that if Android TV is still worth getting now that Google TV is gaining more traction. Would I be missing out on much if I stayed with Android TV or would I be falling behind? I heard rumors and speculation that many Android TVs themselves are gonna get a software update to Google TV.

Mi Box 4K remote to control everything via CEC

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 03:03 AM PST

I have three devices connected to each other.

    1) Sony TV to Mi Box 4K via HDMI 1. Bravia sync turned on. The TV's remote can be used to operate Mi Box, and turning Mi Box off (via Mi Box's remote) also turns off the TV.

    2) Mi Box 4K to Sony HT-RT3 speakers via optical cable. Supports till Dolby Digital and works perfectly. Dolby Digital source volume cannot be controlled with Mi Box's remote, you need the audio system's remote for that, which I know is normal behaviour since it works by audio passthrough.

    3) Sony TV to Sony HT-RT3 speakers via HDMI 2. This is not ARC since the TV is old and doesn't have an ARC port. I've made this connection just for the CEC control, not for audio. The TV and audio system's audio are synced and can be controlled by the TV's remote.

So, while playing anything, the TV's remote can be used as the "master" remote since it can control both Mi Box and the speakers. The problem is with the remote itself. It's bulky and hence inconvenient.

The Mi Box's remote is convenient but it can only control AAC audio volume, and for DD, I need either one of the other remotes. Since I mostly stream Netflix, I'm looking for a workaround where the Mi Remote can act as the "master" remote and can control the speaker's volume directly.

Not a very major inconvenience, but I'm curious to know if it's possible.

    Change the resolution?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 07:11 AM PST

Hey, does anyone know how to change the resolution on Android TV? I use to have a Apple TV plugged in to it would play content in 4K. But now when I play content through the same apps on the built-in Android TV, it's in 1080p.

nvidia Shield tV Pro with youTube hDR problems or Chromecast with google tV?

    Posted: 10 Mar 2022 12:37 AM PST

I know this has been asked many times and I've read many posts already, but I can't seem to make up my mind. I'm looking for an Android device device to use with my LG 4K TV, since I hate the fact that I'm currently using my TV and my provider's TV box for different apps, thus having to use two remotes. I'll be using it for streaming mainly.

I got really enthousiastic about the Shield TV Pro. Good hardware, customization options, and future proof, but it seems it can't handle YouTube HDR. In what way will this be a problem? I watch quite a lot of videos on YouTube, so is this a deal breaker?

Edit: I don't know what happened with the capitalized characters in the title there..

Are there any hack communities focused on smart TVs?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2022 08:47 PM PST

This was a repost from r/Android, please forgive the perspective.

They are basically just phones with tv hardware addons at this point. Seems like it's simple enough to root and dig around. I've seen IoT stuff, direct IPV6 cable communication, USB stuff, but nothing that really reads and controls the frontend interfaces. I'd love to hack picture in picture from the multi HDMI, or establish alert responses through MQTT or the like. Set up a tv server out of the Android/Roku/FireTV platform to do my bidding? Hell yeah! Uncover and control hidden hardware, attach new hardware, sweat the software for sport...

It seems like it's a ripe garden to explore and plunder, is there somewhere I can learn a bit more about it?

FTR, I've perused XDA, SuperUser, StackOverflow, Whirlpool, Doomworld, Reddit, Blulight, Hackaday, Erowid, Slashdot, AVForums, RV-Raid, GSM-Hosting, and probs a dozen others I would consider less than helpful. I've lurked IRC channels, followed 0-day notices, built my own testbeds, learned about chip reprogramming through CH341A devices... I can't find anything more than the smallest pentesting examples.

Am I the only person that thinks this could be fun?
