The Top 10 Android Action Games of 2022 (my research and predictions)

    Posted: 09 Mar 2022 07:28 AM PST

tl;dr 1 - There are so many games that label themselves as part of the action genre so I basically use this list to cover a lot of the great games that don't fit in those other genres as well. It was a lot of fun doing this research. Hope you guys enjoy. Here is my list for this years Top 10 Action Games of 2022: Apple Knight: Action Platformer, Soul Knight Mobile, Demonborne, Grimvalor, JYDGE, Huntdown, Dead Cells, ICEY, Cookie Run: OvenSmash, Tomb Raider: Reloaded (Extras: Tom Clancy's The Division, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, ActRaiser Renaissance) (I give my reasons for choosing each one, so if one of these confuses you, make sure to read the post before raging 😂)

tl;dr 2 - I made all of this with game footage into a short HQ video here https://youtu.be/YKLIfACuCaY

Update on the original video for those that care; it now has over 250k view in less than 10 weeks. I credit a lot of this success to Reddit and the feedback I have gotten from this community. So thank you! https://youtu.be/7-TakjaKy30

But for those of you who rather read, here is the video script:

The most generic genre in the gaming world is action games because it can pretty much include anything that has action. But that also allows some of the best mobile games to get missed so here are the top 10 mobile Action Games for 2022.

The first and best action game is Apple Knight: Action Platformer. This game which just came out 4 months ago might not seem like much at first, but you will not find a game as good as this one that does not cost money. It's graphics are nothing to write home about, but it's gameplay is incredibly dynamic and diverse. The game prides itself in its precise touch controls including 6 different controller layouts, fluid movement, and smooth animations. There are tons of different levels each full of quests, loot and 2 secret areas. The game has an extremely high skill threshold, so as you play expect that your skill alone will allow you to get over 10x better at the game. When you multiply that with the advantages gained by finding new weapons, gear and pets, the opportunity for progression based endorphin release is off the charts. Now don't get me wrong. There are other action games that deliver this level of quality and you will see some of them on this list, but almost all of them cost money to download.

The second game on the list is the new Soul Knight game. For those of you who don't know, the original Soul Knight released in 2017 is one of the best action games on the mobile platform period. The game has over 100 million downloads, has kept a 4.5 star rating with over a million reviews and has the editor's choice signification from google play. It is an incredible game and if you haven't tried it out, you definitely should. Those of you that have already tried it out, we'll be happy to know that ChillyRoom has announced that they will be making a new 2.5 D role playing action mobile game using the same universe. In fact, their plan is to add more story line to introduce the backstory of the characters found in the original Soul Knight game. We don't know a ton else about the game, but the Devs have stated that there will be a lot of character customization options and a lot of Easter eggs for players of the original game. So I cannot emphasize enough that if you like action games, you should try out the Original Soul Knight game you are seeing footage of right now. This game is now a 4 year old classic and not only will you have a lot of fun playing it, you will also be able to enjoy their new game more when it comes out hopefully late this year.

The third game on the list is Demonborne. This game probably fits better in the RPG genre, but there were just too many other games to cover on that list and since it is an action RPG, it fits here as well. Demonborne is currently still in Beta, but looks like it should come out sometime this year. There are two things that have really impressed me about this game. The first one is that it takes on the concept of demons and angels like the Diablo series, but instead of focusing on the conflict and politics between the two worlds, this game is just about Demons. The bad guys are demons and the good guys are demons. As you, who is a demon, go through the storyline, you get hints to the depth of this strange world, but each encounter also usually leaves you with more questions than it answers. The second thing that really impressed me about this game is how clean it feels. All the characters and maps are simple and elegant creating a focus on the action itself which relies on timing things perfectly. This of course requires skill, but the game also requires some thought and strategy as you plan out how to customize your equipment to your playstyle.

The fourth game is Grimvalor. This game is not new, but every once in a while I see an older game that I think might get some new hype because it was never really discovered the way it should be. The most famous example of this was Among us which was out for 8 years before it was discovered, but I digress. Grimvalor is a skill based two dimensional RPG with dynamic abilities and intuitive movement. It has great graphics, a good storyline and enough secrets hidden throughout the maps to make each area highly replayable. After about 2 hours of playing, the game requests one payment of $7 to unlock the whole game and never asks for money again. This is truly a fantastic model because by the time you get to that point, you will know whether or not you like the game enough to buy it. You can see by the reviews that so many players think it was in fact worth the purchase.

The fifth game is JYDGE. This game is a pure action top down shooter. It is simple, but it is well done. In the setting of the city of Edenbyrg, crime is everywhere. As you destroy this crime, you will be able to upgrade your cybernetic JYDGE by modifying your Gavel rifle, finding new items, and choosing different companions. The game advertises over a BILLION different configurations. The balance of these options is decent so you should be able to fit your exact playstyle no matter if your preference is guns, rockets, lasers, electricity, or something else. If you like hack and slash action, but prefer guns, this is the perfect game for you and it's replayability should last you a while.

The sixth game is Huntdown: Cyberpunk Adventure. This game is actually still somewhat new to PC and consoles and it did pretty well for the genre, but as is typical nowadays, within just a few months it is already doing better on mobile. Like Grimvalor, this game has a free demo and then a one time full game purchase. So afterwards, the game can be enjoyed with no ads and no microtransactions. Inspired by the iconic action movies and arcade games of the 80s, Huntdown is an action comedy platformer that delivers fast-paced strategic 2D combat against four deadly gangs and several crime bosses. Prepare to be hit by missiles, explosions, and hundreds of unique one-liners in this hilarious adventure from Easy Trigger and Coffee Stain Publishing. If you like their sense of humor, you will love this game.

The seventh game on the list is Dead Cells. This game would have been much higher on the list if it had a demo like Huntdown and Grimvalor, but unfortunately, if you want to play this game you are going to have to pay $9 before getting any content to help you determine whether or not you will like it. They probably did this because this is the way they have released the game on all their other platforms and they just hope the word will get out on how great it is. Well, this is me getting the word out. No other game in the world has done a better job of both relaxing me and challenging me at the same time. The game mechanics are simple and intuitive allowing a player to master each weapon while the enemies and their skills are diverse creating lots of diversity in its challenges and always pushing you to that next level.

The eighth game is ICEY. Nominated in 2016 as the best Indie Game on PlayStation, this 2D side-scrolling action game is now on mobile. In the game you play as a female cybernetic warrior named ICEY. This game has really smooth gameplay with extremely satisfying combos. As you progress, you can unlock and upgrade new skills to take on stronger enemies. The combat is very fast paced requiring the gamer to get good at knowing when to attack, dodge or counterattack. As you get good at this and then turn that into powerful combos, you can take on some of the many terrifying cyborg bosses the game has waiting for you. Unfortunately, like Dead Cells, this game requires an upfront purchase of $3 to be able to enjoy it.

The ninth game on the list is Cookie Run: OvenSmash. This is the newest game of the Cookie Run Series and it is not out yet, but will hopefully be out later this year. Sadly, there is not a ton of information about this game yet. In fact, the devs announced that they might even change the name of it before it comes out, but we do know that it will be a fast-paced battle royale with lots of action from the moment you start a game until it ends. I did not put it on my battle royale list mainly because we don't have any footage of the game yet. The footage you are watching is from the original cookie run. That being said, we do know that the game will have lots of different cookies with lots of different skills and abilities. And the devs have said the game will have a focus on tactics and non stop action.
The last game is Tomb Raider: Reloaded. This is a brand new mobile action game released by a big company, but honestly, the only reason I put this on the list is because I am seeing a lot of hype from other gamers, but I am very wary of this game. I know Lara Croft is awesome and all that, but this game looks like your typical mobile game. Now, I do recognize that this is not auto play and it does require skill to get through these levels which is much better than the other games that follow this same format, but that just doesn't seem like quite enough to me. Mobile games have been getting better and better and this game feels like we are setting. If you disagree, please let me know why this game deserves the hype in a comment below.

Ok, so those are the top 10 Mobile Action Games for 2022, but I do have 3 more honorable mentions for you.

The first one is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition. This game has been rumored to be coming to mobile for a while now. The main reason that it is not on this list is because I am pretty sure it is not coming out this year, but even if it were, it would probably not be very high on this list because for whatever reason GTA games have not done well on mobile. Some argue that the game type doesn't fit well on the phone, but I have trouble seeing that. Rather, I have a feeling Rockstar games has not found a good mobile team to translate their games well to mobile.

The second honorable mention is Tom Clancy's The Division. Ubisoft announced that they were working on bringing this game to mobile devices as part of its ongoing multimedia expansion of the Tom Clancy franchise. Sadly, Alain Corre, executive director at Ubisoft, did not give a lot of detail in his brief and now 8 months later, we are still in the dark about it. I do think this game will be a big hit when it comes out, but I simply don't think it will get released this year.

The last honorable mention is ActRaiser Renaissance. This game is a really cool combination of 2D platforming actions with City-building simulation. The graphics and gameplay are fantastic, it has a great soundtrack and it just came out. So it has everything going for it, but it is also $20 upfront and when you look at the game from the lens of paying $20 before you even know if you will like the game style, it changes a lot. The game is great, but it isn't much if at all better than some of the free games on this list so that ended up edging it off the list.

Well, that's it guys. Hope that helps. If a game is not on here that you think should be on here, it is probably because I put it in a different genre like perhaps Adventure games or RPGs. In reality, the action genre is so generic that I used this video to cover mostly good games that I was not able to put in those other videos so I would highly recommend flipping through this playlist for the type of games you are looking for.

Alright guys, I'll see you next time.

Looking for a turn based RPG game that plays well with touch screen controls

    Posted: 09 Mar 2022 06:13 AM PST

What's a good single-player game I can play on my Android phone without a controller? I'm in the market for something I can pick up and put down through the day. I wouldn't mind an old-school RPG like Chrono Cross or Final Fantasy, it just needs to play well with touch screens.

I see Chrono Cross is getting a Switch remaster, so I'm going to wait on reviews for that.

Simple mechanics, lots of depth, clean UI, pick up and play: let's share recs.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2022 09:47 AM PST

Hey folks, looking for more recs for (imo) the best kind of mobile game - simple but deep, with a polished feel and no bullshit arbitrary progression or gating to prevent you from just getting into things. The kind of games that stick around on your phone for years and years.

Most of y'all are probably familiar with the classics: Triple Town, Threes, Drop7, Dungeon Raid (RIP... though I hear Troll Patrol is an OK remake), and the original Puzzle Craft.

Recently I've been obsessed with Tower Swap - I can play this for hours but it takes like 2 seconds to learn. High score of 5082 on the base game, and the weekend guild events have me coming back regularly.

Atomas and Make7 (but only the "3 Blocks" mode) are newer ones that I've been enjoying as well though I think they don't quite have the same level of staying power.

Honorable mention to Blendoku2 and Hungry Cat Nonograms, which are level-based but have really clean UI and a lot of content. Tuesday Quest (Hungry Cat dev) also has their older game Puzzle Forge II on iOS which is IMO one of the best merge games of all time.

Anyways, would love to hear more recs in this vein and hear what new simple games y'all are playing these days.

    Template:

    Single/Multiplayer: any

    Genre: puzzle I guess?

    Online/Offline: any

    Monetization/Cost: any

    Portrait/Landscape: any

Key Features: Good UI, lots of depth, little to no mass market corporate bullshit / bloat.
