Android TV by TCL starts on its own, late at night

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 02:08 AM PST

    Hello,

I hope I write in the proper place.

I have purchased a new TCL Android TV (model 75C725 ) which has version 11 of the OS.

Very rarely (about once a month or once of 2 months), I noticed that the TV starts itself late at night (near 1:00 or 0:30 or even 2:00), and as YouTube is often the last app that I use before turning off the display, it also plays the video...

    How could it be?

I tried to contact TCL via their website, but then they said they provide support to the US only. I tried to contact Google, and after showing them the bug-report file, they said that I should talk with TCL, as they saw this in the logs and believe it's a bug of TCL:

    12-11 00:26:14.025 1000 722 2117 I PowerManagerService: Waking up from Asleep (uid=1000, reason=WAKE_REASON_APPLICATION, details=class com.tcl.settings.receiver.TimerManagerBroadcastReceiver)...

Sadly, as I said, TCL doesn't seem to provide support for this.

I also tried to contact the store (which is also the official importer of the TV) about this issue, but they gave me a very weird and unbelievable explanation: It's because Android updates itself or other apps. They told me that a workaround would be to manually update stuff myself every 2 weeks or so, and also turn off "quick-start" feature (meaning the TV will be completely turned off each time I turn off the display).

Has anyone here ever got this issue, on TCL or other Android-TV's based TV ?

Shield keeps asking which app to open a video with even though I keep selecting 'always'.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 05:01 AM PST

This has been frustrating me for so long. Each time I open a video the 'Open with' menu appears for me to select an app to view the video. I then click on VLC and then click 'Always' as I want it to remember my choice.

However, it never remembers. As soon as I restart my Shield, I get the same 'Open with' menu appearing when selecting videos.

Does anyone else deal with this and if so, is there a fix? I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks

I have a Skyworth Android TV and tried out Nord VPN but HBO go won't work. Is there any workaround so I can use HBO max while using United States in Nord? Am in the Philippines btw.

YouTube music on Android TV lots of issues

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 10:28 AM PST

Hey all trying to get my home fully setup. I have a Sony Bravia x900h and when trying to play music from the Google home app I just get a black screen but music will play. When I try to play music across multiple devices in my home it won't play on my tv, it just spins in the app.

Does anyone know a fix or experienced this issue?

Some Disney apps no longer supported

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 08:02 AM PST

I just factory reset a CCwGTV to see if that would make the Live tab appear (it did). I reinstalled a bunch of apps and noticed that a few apps from the Disney corporation are no longer supported and cannot be installed from the Play Store. The apps I couldn't install include the FXNow app, the ABC app, and the Freeform app. Those three apps are still present and working on my two other CCwGTV that I set up last week. The apps didn't come up when I searched for them from the Apps tab. When I searched for them in the Play Store app on the CCwGTV it said they're not supported on this device. The Play Store on my phone doesn't give the option to install them remotely to the CCw/GTV, like it does does other compatible apps. Other Disney apps install fine, like Disney+, Disney NOW, FOXNOW, ABC News, ESPN, and local ABC affiliate station apps. I wonder if this has something to do with the negotiations going on between Disney and YouTube TV.

BTW, I know how to sideload apps. The point of this post was to share info about these apps not really to ask how to get them. I'm also aware that some of the "main network" apps, like FOXNOW, include tabs for their sister networks that basically duplicate the content of the sister networks' apps, like FXNOW. However, I don't think this is a case of Disney consolidating and eliminating superfluous apps, because the ABC app is not available to install now, and that app contained content from ABC's smaller sister network apps.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 02:11 AM PST

This may have been answered before but new to this forum.

I have just purchased the 'white' chromecast.

Everything works well and I have downloaded quite a few streaming apps which all work but I cannot find the All4 app tried everything.

Don't really want to cast it from my phone and the All4 app on 'nowtv' doesn't include 'live tv'

    any help would be appreciated

    TCL r646 usb stick?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 10:05 PM PST

I have a usb 3.0 stick that works on my TCL Roku r617 tv..but it doesn't work on my newer TCL r646 Google tv.

I tried using a usb 2.0 extension cord (cos my usb 2.0 stick works on the r646) but that doesn't work either..I've tried every format and seems none of them allow the stick to be detected

Would a powered USB extension port work? I really want to be able to download large files over 4gig and have to use exfat on my usb 2.0 stick just to use the usb stick on the tv..crazy how my 3 year old Roku TCL has no issues! Thx for any help

Which devices support Dolby Digital plus to Dolby Digital conversion?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2021 12:14 AM PST

I just switched from a fire stick to Chromecast with Google TV, and I haven't been able to get surround sound working. I've spent a whole day playing with settings, buying and using using audio extractor boxes, posting online and doing research, etc.

My audio system only supports Dolby Digital but unlike the fire stick that I used previously, the Chromecast won't convert unsupported audio such as Dolby Digital Plus (from streaming apps) to Dolby Digital. From what I found online the only major streaming apps that support native Dolby Digital streams are Plex (if that counts), HBO max, and Apple tv Plus. All the other apps just fall back to stereo if Dolby Digital plus is not available and the device does not support down converting to regular Dolby Digital.

My question is, now that I have to return the Chromecast with Google TV due to the lack of DD+ to DD down mixing, I'm wondering what other Android TV devices support this? I think the newer Shields do but what about older ones? What about other devices?

I really don't want to have to go back to the fire stick or upgrade my audio equipment because of this. Thanks

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 04:49 PM PST

I am using an alternative launcher (side launcher 3); on my Google TV with Chromecast, I love everything about it. My only issue is when I create a new shortcut and enter the url it opens in a browser. Anyway to have it open in YouTube app?

    Awful Example

Bye bye shield tube hello ftv4k max

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 10:07 PM PST

So for a while now my Nvidia shield tube was becoming slow and had trouble with 4k content. Lately it would lock up playing 4k in YouTube and Netflix.

I talked with Nvidia and rma'd it. Got a new one last week. Felt a bit snappier and was able to play 4k in everything except plex.

It still stutters opening Netflix. It still redraws the home screen every other time I exit an app.

On Monday a friend came back from a trip to the states and brought me ftv4k max.

To my absolute surprise this 35$ (on sale) device feels snappier than the tube and plays 4k HDR on all my apps including plex from local and remote server with no issues.

I'm trying to figure out if the difference is due to the fact that the tegra has an amazing GPU but mediocre CPU, the fact that fireos is based on Android 9 without Google bloat or a combo of both.

But I know for sure that I won't recommend the shield, even the pro, to anyone unless they're game streaming , ever again.
