PSA: Just bought a Pixel 6 or 6 Pro? Rad, me too! Your camera still sucks.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 12:22 PM PST

Clickbait-y title but hear me out. Some months ago, I posted this.

TLDR is that in low lighting conditions, most 3rd party apps that use the front camera will not get anything over 16fps on nearly every single Android device.

The wildcard here is that CameraX API, and by-in-large Android 12 were supposed to fix this by hooking into your device's camera framework, and so long as OEMs and devs implemented it, would get you all of the rad features of your stock cam, and one would assume, that buttery smooth framerate in any lighting condition.

For the most part, they don't. Device manufacturers need to support it and app devs also need to code for it. Neither are required to do so, thus here we are. Tiktok and Twitter are the only exceptions that I've tried so far on my 6 Pro, so luckily we're headed in the right direction. Instagram, Facebook Live, FB Messenger, Snapchat and possibly more are all still subject to smeary dog shit video. Yep, even after the CEO of Snapchat was featured in the 6/6 Pro keynote, their app is still functionally failing in this way on the 6 Pro.

    What Can We Do?

Review, email, tweet and otherwise contact these devs and let them know their apps are not working as they should, which means 30fps in all lighting conditions, and properly hooked into CameraX to ensure future compatibility.

What's Reasonable To Expect, According To You?

Ok so this is me sitting on my Reddit-High-Horse admittedly. I think it's not unreasonable for at least the current 2021 flagships from the top 5 Android OEMs to get some sort of special treatment here. The argument is that since iOS has less devices to maintain, it gets better apps. I see validity in that but at the same time, Android has a SEVENTY PERCENT or higher split in the mobile phone space. This means over 2/3s of potential users are going to have a shitty experience. The top 5 OEMs should have enough resources to make sure their devices support the jetpack extensions or whatever is needed, and app devs should be able to at least loop in 10-15 devices per year from the top OEMs. CameraX in principle should mean devs should only need blanket CameraX support though.

We'll get there #teamandroid - somehow. Let's rally the troops.

What's your favorite part of the new "SOT since last full charge interface" in Android 12?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 07:58 AM PST

We've all been using the great "screen on time since last full charge" for years. It's the most important metric when determining a phone's battery life. Since Android 12 has improved this core feature, what additional features as 12 added that you find the most compelling and useful?
