4 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 196) Posted: 05 Nov 2021 05:29 AM PDT Welcome back, my fellow mobile gamers, to the latest roundup of the most interesting games I played and that were covered on MiniReview this week. I hope you'll enjoy it. Support these posts (and YouTube content + development of MiniReview) on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/NimbleThor <3 This episode includes a fun new action roguelike shooter, arguably the best Star Wars game on mobile, an awesome oldschool side-scrolling roguelike RPG, and a great adventure point-and-click puzzle game. Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below. New to these posts? Check out the first one from 195 weeks ago here. Let's get to the games:RASPBERRY MASH [Game Size: 349 MB] (free)Genre: Action / Roguelike / Shooter - Requires Online Access Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Full tl;dr review by NimbleThor: Raspberry Mash is a fun roguelike RPG shooter with a dark pixel art-style and five dungeon floors full of gory combat against hordes of monsters and bosses. The biggest difference between Raspberry Mash and other popular titles such as Soul Knight and Otherworld Legends is its unique combat system. Instead of having to repeatedly spam an attack button, our character automatically targets and attacks nearby enemies when we don't move. Meanwhile, we manually take over to trigger abilities, run away from strong enemies, or dodge the insane number of bullets bosses fire at us. This creates a gameplay experience that is fast-paced yet feels slightly more relaxed than most twin-stick shooters - but just don't mistake the simplicity for a lack of challenge because Raspberry Mash is definitely hardcore. Fortunately, we can spend souls earned from killing enemies on buying permanent character upgrades between playthroughs so that we gradually grow stronger. The game features a crisp pixel art-style, insane boss fights, and lots of weapons, abilities, and combos that unlock over time. The biggest downside is that although the dungeons are randomly generated, there isn't a lot of variation to them. With that said, it's great as a pick-up-and-play game that almost guarantees a fun experience for a few runs. Raspberry Mash monetizes through iAPs for a premium currency used to unlock random weapons that then have a chance of dropping during gameplay, incentivized ads for free premium currency, and an energy system that limits us to five runs before we have to pay or wait an hour. Fortunately, each run is rather lengthy, which means the game can easily be played for extended periods of time despite the energy system and the iAPs are never necessary. Check it out on Google Play: Here Check it out on MiniReview:: Here Star Wars: KOTOR [Total Game Size: 2.5 GB] ($9.99)Genre: RPG / Adventure - Offline Playable Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Some tl;dr review by AlexSem: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a port of an epic role-playing adventure that tells the story of a young hero on a quest to bring down a powerful Sith lord 4000 years prior to the events of the Star Wars movies. We generate our character by picking one of three classes that each offer unique gameplay strategies and then define our Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence stats, pick a set of active and passive skills, and venture out on a journey full of rich narratives and lots of side-quests. The game uses a popular Dungeons & Dragons system adapted for the sci-fi setting, which means each action we take needs to pass a check where our stat values determine the possibility of a successful outcome. The actual battles happen automatically in real-time, but we can pause at any moment to issue orders, use items, perform specific skills, or even wield the Force. The story is one of the most interesting among all the Star Wars games. Each challenge we face can be dealt with in multiple ways, and our actions and dialogue choices push us towards either the Light or the Dark side, allowing or preventing certain options in future events. Furthermore, the characters we meet and befriend all become invaluable additions to our cause, both from a narrative and gameplay point of view. Meanwhile, the beautiful audio, full voice-acting, cinematic cut-scenes, and great 3D graphics that still hold up decently well to this day provide a truly unique immersive experience. Start Wars: KOTOR is a $9.99 premium game. It is a full PC/Console quality experience ported to mobile with nothing left out, and one of the best role-playing games of all times. Even if you are not a Star Wars fan but love a good RPG adventure, be sure to give this masterpiece a try. Check it out on Google Play: Here Check it out on MiniReview:: Here WazHack [Game Size: 51 MB] (free "trial")Genre: RPG / Roguelike / Side-scrolling - Online + Offline Playable Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Full tl;dr review by JBMessin: WazHack is a unique side-scrolling roguelike inspired by Nethack's rules and gameplay, which means every run has a different procedurally generated layout, loot needs to be identified before it can be used, and it'll take many failed attempts to reach the goal. We begin by selecting a character from a rather large pool of classes, with each having their own specific animal companion, starting stats, and equipment. Then, we're thrown into a single-player or co-op multiplayer 2D side-scrolling dungeon that we venture ever downward, navigating through countless traps and enemies in search of a treasure of immense power. Those familiar with the top-down perspective of most roguelikes might appreciate the change provided by WazHack's side-scrolling approach that adds an extra dimension to combat since ranged attacks are now affected by gravity and must be aimed properly. This makes the turn-based combat feel a bit more involved than the simple tap-to-attack mechanics that are typical for the genre. The 3D models might not be visually impressive, but the UI is well-optimized for small screens, and even with a lot of action going on at the same time, the game runs smoothly on low-end devices. WazHack is free to try until we get 300ft into the dungeon, after which we must pay $0.99 for each individual class we want to permanently unlock. This means the game should be seen as a demo of a premium game. Although this might be a turn-off to some as it's relatively quick to get to 300ft, there are at least no additional iAPs or ads. Check it out on Google Play: Here Check it out on MiniReview:: Here Cube Escape Collection [Game Size: 192 MB] (free)Genre: Adventure / Point-and-click / Puzzle - Offline Orientation: Landscape Required Attention: Little tl;dr review by Pete McD: Rusty Lake has earned a great deal of well-deserved acclaim for their range of whimsically disturbing escape room games and Cube Escape Collection compiles all their free games into one app, making it a great option for people new to the series or those looking to replay them. Each game typically starts in an unassuming setting – in the first game, it's in someone's sunny living room, for example. Things then quickly get weirder, with lampshades dripping blood, sinister anthropomorphic crows, black cubes, strange figures made of a black fuzzy substance, and much more. The artwork is bizarre, and the gameplay is equally tricky. The series gradually builds up an interesting though confusing backstory, dropping breadcrumbs of plot points every so often but mainly leaving the strange events as a mystery. The puzzles range from being relatively easy to frustratingly obtuse. Overall, they are well-designed, and it is possible to eventually solve most puzzles ourselves, which is very satisfying. Some puzzles are completely illogical, however, and seem to be nothing more than obstacles meant to artificially extend the length of the game. And although there is a built-in hint system, it's not very helpful as it often provides hints for things we have already done. Fortunately, the simple controls work well for the most part, although they are occasionally fiddly or have a delayed response. The only monetization are optional ads to get hints, which can be completely ignored or entirely removed through a single $2.99 iAP. Having this much quality content for free is a bargain and so there's no reason not to check it out, even if only to enjoy the unique atmosphere. Will auto play games be more liked in future? Posted: 05 Nov 2021 09:00 AM PDT I have noticed in communities that, generally, there are quite a lot of hate toward auto-play games (like for example, the recent Odin Vallanha Rising on mobile, which people pointed out to have auto play mechanisms). . It just seems like if it's an auto play game, it's either not as popular, or it gets hated (for example, MMOByte hating constantly on auto play games and saying it's not a good example, I remember them doing a video on A3 Still Alive). I want to understand. Why is it that auto play games are so hated? I don't really understand the criticism here. Maybe it's because I'm cynical or something, but when I read criticism about auto play, all I ever hear is just 'its that one auto play game', 'auto play = quit', 'boring' and such things. It's like that on youtube too. It just feels like they don't want to try out the game just because of the auto play mechanism. Understandable if you dislike it, but I don't think it should really turn away people just like that... To me, I do actually like them somewhat because these days I just don't have too much time to play very actively, I can play for hours yes, but there will be times where I am quite busy and can't play for a while. In this case, I pick up my auto play game, set parameters etc. And play it goes, checking every once in a while. I feel a sense of progression watching my power increase bit by bit. I am wondering about the future of auto play community. Right now, auto play games seem to be disliked generally, if that's the case, it's good for you. But I feel like in 10 or 15 years, people will be looking more often at these types of games and seeking them out due to them being busy and doing more than just work + play or school + play. I feel like these games get slandered for the wrong reasons. In my case, I play V4. It's not too popular because of its auto play niche, but I really like that game, it just clicks with me. The only *other* problem I'd think of is people slandering that game just because "Nexon games = bad". Its communication might not be the best, but we've seen them attempt to do so, even in KR version where they also publish roadmap of their update. Even JP version of V4 gets quite a bit of communication. They also host promotional videos for rewards in-game. Sure, it has monetary content, but I found it to be the least p2w of all other games, you can get high CP fairly easily by playing all day, partaking in all events etc. I'd like to hear about your thought. I don't expect this thread will get quite the hit. But I want to hear the discussion and whenever we should trust auto play games more in future. [link] [comments]
Looking for a decent Panzer General style wargame Posted: 05 Nov 2021 09:16 AM PDT Getting pretty tired of casual pseudo-strategy idle games and half-baked Tower Defenses. Looking for a strategy game I can sink my teeth into like the old style Panzer General wargames. I've already played Unciv, Polytopia and the others, so not looking for a 4X game. I wanna focus on battle strategy only not country-building. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]

I dont have broadband, only my phone's data. What's a small size AAA mobile game I can play? Posted: 04 Nov 2021 08:30 PM PDT As the title says, I am only using as much as my phone data plan will allow me. Keeping a small total file size in mind, what's a good AAA game I'd be able to play? But when i try to download it an error will pop up and lead me to some trash solutions like clear my cache and data. [link] [comments]
[Request] Co-op game similar to Overcooked? Posted: 04 Nov 2021 08:11 PM PDT Doesn't need to be a cooking game, just anything in the same vein. Co-op with short levels, and mechanics that can get overwhelming until you work out a good strategy. [link] [comments]
