What was the worst year for smartphones in recent memory?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2021 11:03 AM PST

In my opinion it has to be one between 2015 and 2018, esp. 2015-2017 for Samsung. They've upped their game since then. 2015 wasn't completely terrible, but it was a bit underwhelming coming from 2014 with a pretty solid array of smartphones and I didn't like the interface updates of the Samsung phones in 2015-2017. Them changing almost every ring tone for 2015/6 was bad as the 2013/14 era Samsung ringtones sounded better and more clear. But there were some important issues in those years:

    • HTC started their decline.
    • LGG4 had problems.
    • The Snapdragon 810/808 issues were a problem that affected most of the flagships of 2015.
    • S6s and the Note 5 were without expandable storage, removable batteries, and no IR blaster for the Note 5 and S6 edge+. The batteries were smaller than their 2014 predecessors.
    • The Nexus 6P and 5x had battery issues and bootloop problems.
    • Maybe it's IMO but I didn't enjoy the way Edge devices looked. The whole fad seems to have faded away.
    • The 2016 Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle.
    • Microsoft bought Nokia in late 2013 I think but they majorly effed up starting from the second part of 2014 until basically killing the brand. We all know how that worked out...
    • Most Samsung phones of 2015-2018 didn't feels as nice compared to the more recent ones and they were often followers and not trend-setters like they were in 2010-2014.
