This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Bring back SOT since last charge using tasker

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 10:18 AM PDT

After Google's decision to remove the screen on time stats since last charge in Android 12, I decided to bring it back with tasker. You can import the below profiles/tasks using Taskernet to see SOT since last charge.

    Reset SOT

    Show SOT

    Track SOT

    Calculate SOT

The profiles calculate the screen on time and display it, as a notification, when you plug in or unplug the device. The SOT stats will reset when the device is unplugged only if the battery has reached 100%.

Note: The SOT stats will only be updated if the device is unplugged (i.e., on battery).

Falling Back in Love with my Poco F3 (and Android).

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 01:44 PM PDT

I wanted to share the journey that I've had with this phone and this sub seemed like the perfect place for it.

I bought a Poco F3 a few months ago, the first few weeks were amazing, the performance was fantastic and I couldn't believe that a phone that performs this good could be priced so low. However, this honeymoon period with the Poco F3 ended shortly after, there were huge problems with the phone. I couldn't open voice notes (on whatsapp and telegram) without the screen getting stuck. Notifications would arrive hours after they were supposed to, some applications (like pushbullet) would just not send any notifications until I opened them. The battery was constantly draining, if my phone was at 40 percent at night, it would be dead when I woke up in the morning.

I thought "okay, all of these bugs are software bugs and they will get ironed out with updates". Unfortunately, every time there was an update, it would only bring new bugs. The phone started getting boot-loops, and now it would even get stuck whenever there was a new notification.

I couldn't understand why, a phone that has a top tier processor, why would it struggle with basic smartphone tasks, like playing a voice note. I decided to sell the phone, but I accidentally dropped the phone while working out and now there was a big scratch at the top of it, this made the selling price very low.

I decided to stick with the phone, until I can find a good replacement and then I could pass along the phone to my siblings or parents, so here's where things changed. I was curious about unlocking the device, I did a few searches and found out there were community built roms for Android 12 available for the device. At first, I didn't want to go through the hassle of flashing, but now that I knew this was an option, I just couldn't stand the bugs anymore, I got a notification from Instagram, my crush had texted me 4 hours ago and the phone decided now to send me the notification. I thought "screw this let's do this".

What the dev community is doing for this phone, and what I can say about the Android 12 rom, it literally brought life back to my phone. The bugs that were in the official software that came with the phone MIUI are completely gone. It's such a trivial thing to be happy about but I literally felt a relief when I played a voice note and my screen didn't get stuck. The battery drain is gone, my notifications arrive when they are supposed to and there are no more bootloops. My phone feels smoother than ever.

The rom that I used (Pixel Extended rom) has turned my phone to an actual smart device rather than the potato it was before, Android 12 is amazing, the theme engine makes me excited everytime I pick up the phone. I haven't felt this excited about Android ever since Android Lollipop, it's so much fun, even the screen unlocking has such a fluid animation.

The best feature that I'm loving in Android 12 is the privacy dashboard, the prompt in the notification bar when an app is using my location is amazing, Instagram was checking my location every 5 minutes, I was able to see this in the dashboard and turn the location permission off for that app.

Anyways, I don't understand why Xiaomi is bottle-necking their devices so much, why is MIUI so unoptimized that there are so many bugs that make the phone a headache to use?

    Thankyou for reading.

Speculation on how to restore the UNIX philosophy in mobile phone apps

    Posted: 06 Nov 2021 05:31 PM PDT

Unix philosophy is that all app should do one thing and one thing well. And often these can be chained together to make more complex behaviours. Which allows for automations as well.

There is a kernel of this with software intents in android but it's often inaccessible for the users.

What would be good is to have a class of apps called miniapps or something. Where you can manually chain them together using a phone GUI that may look like NODE-RED interface.

E.g. So you can chain the reception of an email to a photo extractor that then pipes to an image rescaler to a archiver app.

E.g. a button that instantly takes a photo, applies an effect then pipe to instantgram and twitter to post to your wall

Maybe you can also have a book of recipes for common mini app chains. Which would be helpful if you can also port over many common miniapps for a standard library of common actions.
