3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 190)

    Posted: 17 Sep 2021 04:04 AM PDT

Welcome back, and happy Friday. This week marks episode 190 of my weekly mobile gaming recommendations based on the most interesting games I've played this week. Hope you'll enjoy one of them :)

Support these posts (and YouTube content + development of MiniReview) on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/NimbleThor <3

This episode includes a fun and wacky simulation action game, a neat puzzle indie game with no monetization, and a dungeon crawler roguelike RPG with lots of new ideas.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 190 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Turbo Dismount [Game Size: 131 MB] (free)

Genre: Simulation / Action / Wacky / Ragdoll Physics - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Turbo Dismount is a hilarious ragdoll-physics sandbox action game ported from PC where we place our ragdoll character in various vehicles and then hurl them at obstacles to score as many points as possible by performing stunts and crashes.

After selecting one of the many levels, we add obstacles such as stone walls, ramps, traffic cones, turbo pads, or even a minefield, pick our favorite wacky vehicle, and then launch it straight at these obstacles at the highest possible speed. Then, we just sit back, relax, and watch the mayhem unfold.

There is no real goal to the game except scoring as many points as possible by doing the most possible damage to our ragdoll character. What truly makes the game great is the high level of customization that allows us not only to customize each level, but also decide where our ragdoll should be positioned on the various vehicles.

Since we don't actually control our vehicle after we've launched it, the controls are as easy as can be. Meanwhile, the simple low-poly art-style is a decent fit for the gameplay, and the UI is clean and easy to understand.

Turbo Dismount monetizes through a few $0.99 iAPs to unlock additional tracks and vehicles, incentivized ads to try these for free, and a $5.99 iAP to unlock everything at once and remove the ads.

Turbo Dismount is a great time-killer and it's just good old fun to experiment with the many combinations of levels, obstacles, vehicles, and character positions for a few hours. The only major thing missing from the PC version is the level editor.

Maestria [Total Game Size: 123 MB] (free)

Genre: Puzzle / Indie - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Maestria is a beautiful and calm puzzle game that has us bring back musical harmony to eight mysterious worlds split into 160 levels.

The objective is to ring bells of different colors and music tones in the correct order by carefully pushing around our character and bells to properly position them on the playing field. Next, we tap our character, and a ring starts expanding around us that activates any bell it touches. While things start out easy enough, later levels introduce bells that automatically move, bells that are blocked so we can't move them, and various other obstacles that make the game surprisingly challenging.

The art-style clearly resembles Monument Valley, with gorgeous visuals, dynamic lighting, and great attention to detail. Combined with the cheery music and sound effects, this gives the game a calm and almost Zen-like adventurous feeling.

The puzzles are well-crafted and entertaining, but the mysterious world and cute storytelling drew me in so well that the game almost became more about exploring and uncovering the story than the puzzles themselves. The biggest downside is the controls that occasionally make it tricky to move our characters and bells the way we intend. While not game-breaking, it is slightly frustrating.

Mastria is completely free without ads or iAPs. The gameplay is unlikely anything I've ever played before, and it's astonishing that a game this polished has been developed by a solo indie developer. Honestly, it's just a must-try for anyone who enjoys puzzle games.

Dread Rune [Game Size: 295 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Dungeon Crawler / Roguelike - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Dread Rune is a roguelike dungeon crawler that boasts 12 characters with unique abilities and starting stats, five challenging bosses, and over 100 items to find and use.

On each playthrough, we attempt to get through as many randomly generated dungeon floors as possible while defeating enemies, gathering loot, and consuming resources to recover HP and stamina. Interestingly, all items have a durability that wears down when used, which means we constantly burn through items and need to find new ones.

In true roguelike fashion, every time we reach a new floor, we get to pick one of three random upgrades that last until we die. And in-between deaths, tokens earned through gameplay can be spent on buying permanent upgrades to our health, damage, speed, and much more.

With an almost entirely destructible environment and the ability to kill NPCs, either by mistake or on purpose, the combat system of Dread Rune feels different and unique. For better or worse, each attack and ability also consumes a bit of stamina, which prevents us from simply hacking and slashing away at enemies – a system that makes the combat more slow-paced than most action RPGs.

Unfortunately, the controls just aren't great, and the combat experience feels clunky. On the bright side, the game receives monthly updates, so there's a chance this will be fixed in the future.

Dread Rune monetizes through incentivized ads to receive a reward between floors, and iAPs up to $9.99 to remove ads and instantly receive more of the tokens used to buy permanent upgrades. Nothing is locked behind a pay-wall.

As a game that tries new things and is under active development, it's worth checking out for fans of the genre. Just be aware that it still needs more polish.

Same question for other sports such as MLB, NBA, NHL.

So the dad stickman is being controlled by you and you shoot up the bad guys and get better weapons to reach further into the level

I am looking for a game with the same mechanics as Pathfinder Adventures.

Pathfinder would be perfect for me, if it wasn't it's ridiculous price tbh. I really like the dice and card mechanics and that's what I want. Don't care for premium games, and don't need to be multi-player.

[REQUEST] Looking for a game where you can catch and fight monsters of different rarities. How you catch the monster is by setting up traps with baits which will affect the rarity of the monster you might find in your cage. Additionally, it is a game where you can build the terrain around the cages

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 05:38 PM PDT

to catch the specific type of monster only available for that terrain. There are hives that you can battle and when cleared you can use it to increase chances of you finding a rare monster in the cage.

    Introduction

While most mobile games of the platformer genre manage to add the usual mechanics, they often lack one important aspect – the passion and understanding of what makes a game original.

Thankfully, there are a few games that come out every now and then that truly set themselves apart as unique adventures, and you can feel the game's soul as soon as you play it for a while.

    That's where Nihilumbra comes in.

    https://preview.redd.it/8f2ru1tan0o71.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc95574f313d32afed604c6ab40aca95aadde31c

    Gameplay

Nihilumbra is not just a combination of different platformer mechanics, but something that breathes new life to the genre and delivers an intriguing experience.

The game offers fluid movement, smart level design, and great mobile controls.

At first, you simply control the character's movement from left to right and have the ability to jump, but the game has many unique features that unlock as you progress.

Those features are called 'colors' and the player can unlock 5 of them in total.

Each color represents an element and you can use it within the gameplay to your advantage. For example, the blue color represents ice and helps you slide faster, the green color lets you jump on any surface, and the purple color lets you erase any other color that you have used thus far.

I haven't seen anything like this before and I'm pleasantly surprised by the developers' creativity.

It's very entertaining to experience the usual platforming gameplay mixed up with this unique color mechanic, and you have to use it very intelligently as you go further within the game. It's part of the puzzles and something that you can use on your enemies in order to make them help you or just disappear completely.

Nihilumbra offers many different types of challenges as you go on and the types of levels are varied too.

The game keeps itself fresh and exciting which is one of the best things about it.

    https://preview.redd.it/zjbdzqqhz0o71.jpg?width=1067&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f74a24e92ef37216fbee08f28afa39ebcc0aedbd

    Extras

The graphics of Nihilumbra are gorgeous to look at and offer a perfect blend of detailed textures and simplicity.

The quality of the graphics could have been higher, but the game manages to use its limitations to its highest potential nonetheless and offers a visual treat for the player.

The UI is neither good nor terrible, it feels a bit unprofessional but does not affect the experience too much.

Also worth mentioning is the fully-voiced dialogue that continuously accompanies your adventure. Sometimes it's helpful, or it gives an insight into the game's story, and at other times it challenges your decisions and "integrity". It's a great touch to have, and coupled with the game's beautiful sound effects and background music – it's one of the best experiences I've had on a mobile device.

No matter what device you're on though, I strongly recommend using headphones for the best possible experience.

The only thing I'd like to point out is that the free version only lets you play until 2 chapters, so you might want to keep some money ready if you want to buy and play the full game.

    Introduction

RAID: Shadow Legends is a mobile game known for many things, but its most prominent reason for fame is the extremely aggressive ads campaign. The game had so many ads in other games, YouTube videos, and even TV at one point – that it ended up becoming an internet meme for a very long time.

The game generally advertises itself as a role-playing adventure game, but it relies heavily on gacha elements for its gameplay and progression structure.

It's certainly appealing from a first look and its graphics are undeniably crisp, but every game is truly judged by its gameplay in most cases.

So, does RAID provide an experience as good as the ads claim or does it suffer from an overinflated ego? Let's find out.

    https://preview.redd.it/odkmgjs5k0o71.jpg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32a6889652c85126cdcb72bd662b626b11c6b120

    Gameplay

As great as RAID: Shadow Legends looks and runs, unfortunately, the gameplay is very lifeless.

The turn-based combat in the game is extremely basic and most of the missions and dungeons that you can play through all feel too monotonous and the enemies are uninteresting to fight.

There is nothing special about the AI and it just becomes a race to level your characters high enough to be able to nearly auto-play every level in the game.

The fact the game does have an auto-play button anyway just goes to show how automated the experience is.

Every character is unique and the animations are a delight to look at as they use their own special abilities and attacks – but you can only keep enjoying shiny things for so long and when the time comes for you to enjoy the gameplay it just isn't engaging, fun, or challenging.

The game over-relies on its gacha elements to keep you hooked and a lot of the player-base simply enjoys collecting special heroes and then winning against other players in the PvP arena.

But again, there is no strategy or skill required here and whether you win or not is solely based on your character levels.

The game has particularly expensive microtransactions and the few people who manage to purchase them dominated the game, making it pay-to-win.

The ads are also extremely persistent and feel like an interruption as you're trying to progress through the game's world and become stronger. When the game already has so many microtransactions that are successfully purchased very often, such an aggressive way to make players see ads just leaves little to enjoy the game for.

    https://preview.redd.it/z46wxqx4k0o71.jpg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=691f910d60f567613e82ee600a12ae49873c341c

    Extras

RAID: Shadow Legends looks absolutely stunning for a mobile game.

Everything is extremely detailed and all the textures are high quality. The characters are diverse and every fiber of their clothing has great graphics, and the animations are top-notch through and through.

If you play the game on the highest settings, people would find it hard to believe that it's not something running on a high-end console or a computer. So, having such amazing graphics with some of the best optimizations that I've ever seen (which allows it to run on almost anything) is a big achievement and the game deserves all the praise that it can get for that.

The UI and polish are excellent as well since it was developed with a high budget. Everything is as smooth as possible and nothing is confusing. You can truly immerse yourself in the game's world and not worry about anything getting in the way.

The music is nothing special and mostly has the generic high-budget game tunes in the background, but the sound effects are well-done and fun to listen to.

    Rating: 6

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 07:41 PM PDT

I don't remember the name, but it was a gacha RPG. I played probably three years ago. I remember it had some sort of evolve system. The battle system was turn based, with waves. Our units stood on the left, with 2 or 3 rows and three squares in each row, and the enemies on the right with the same system. Our characters had elements, and if I recall, there was around 6 elements, including light and dark.
