I am looking for an App-blocker or a feature in Android mobile for getting kids off from their mobile game addiction.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 08:37 AM PDT

I need an app or any feature which helps to block all other apps at any cost.

My brother's are addicted to games on mobile which is making my parents so concerned about their academics cause of their addiction. Currently I am using "app block" application on

    play store.

It makes kids in possible to open games but sometimes it doesn't work. I know digital wellbeing from Google but it is easy for the child to disable it whenever he wants.

They should get no chance to disable it. It should seem impossible!!! And for few games there should be time restriction like 30 mts a day. Here's

    1) I am going to completely block settings and play store.

    2) And I am going to the replace newpipe with YouTube.

    3) And regarding games and entertaining application I am just going to limit the time for those.

And feel free to share your ideas mates!!!

Gallery app with PCloud content provider support?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 05:06 AM PDT

I just started using Pcloud for cloud storage and photo backups. I really like their service compared to, say, google or Dropbox. On my Linux machine, I can simply mount my pcloud account with rclone and use it like an external drive.

On Android, it's more complicated for photo management. I have the pcloud app, which has a gallery and automatic backups. However, ideally I would like to be able to view my local and cloud photos in one gallery app.

The Pcloud app exposes my cloud files under a content provider (as in the ContentProvider API), so if I share a file in SMS or whatever, I can pick one from Pcloud. But it isn't treated like a local mount and most gallery apps only support explicit local storage. Do y'all know any gallery apps that support viewing photos from a content provider like Pcloud or RCX? This would obviate the need for every single gallery app to support each provider like GDrive, Dropbox, etc.

Edit: maybe there is an alternate approach that I could take?

What's using up 20 GB of my 32 GB storage?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 10:48 AM PDT

Documents: 53 mb Images: 460 Mb Audio: 800 mb Videos: 65 Mb Apps: 8.7 GB

My phone keeps telling me I'm dangerously low in storage so I keep going into storage to clean storage to free up 200 mb again.

Is the operation system really 20 gb?

How can I configure Android so that the background applications download and upload as fast as possible?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 10:44 AM PDT

According to the screenshot below, background applications have a lower download and upload speed: https://i.stack.imgur.com/cXiaQ.jpg

    The screenshot says:

Keep the app open for getting the best and upload speed.

    How can I avoid that?

I use Android 10 with Samsung Galaxy S9.

I found instructions to hide cursors, but are there any instructions to show them without blinking them?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 12:41 PM PDT

Apparently it's possible to hide cursors in Android apps if you can edit the apk:

    https://code2care.org/pages/android-edittext-cursor-disable

I have trouble seeing on glowing screens, and with blinking cursors, other flashing, and other animation.

I have a Boyue Likebook P10 with an e-ink screen and Android 8.1. I previously tried a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 and a few other devices with conventinal glowing screens, and couldn't use any of them for long.

It'd be nice to see where I'm typing. If I can show the cursor without blinking I should be able to see everything. If I hide the cursor I can at least see the results. If I have a blinking cursor, I have trouble seeing that area. E-ink is to be easier on my eyes, and white cursors on black backgrounds don't hide as much as black cursors on white backgrounds.

Why won't Pandora work on S21?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 12:35 PM PDT

Just upgraded to an S21 Ultra and Pandora went open. It shows opening in my notifications, then goes away. It then shows in my recent apps, but if I try opening from there I get the message "Pandora keeps stopping". In battery settings, it will then show issue detected with Pandora, with the description "frequent crashes".

I've tried uninstalling android web view, I've allowed all permissions, I've set Pandora to never sleep, and have unistalled/reinstalled, restarting the phone after every change. I've had the same results on wifi, data, and with blue tooth on & off. I use Pandora daily so this is super frustrating.

When switching to the new phone, my data also got switched from Sprint to TMobil now that they've merged.

    lg spirit battery

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 08:59 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

My mom has an old lg spirit phone and it's battery has been dying. Sometimes she charges it to 100% and in a few minutes it goes under 30%. I said I'll help her find a replacement, but I've ran into a problem. I'm looking for an lg spirit 4g lte BL-52UHB battery. I have previously found batteries similar to this one, but not the exact same. Sometimes the B at the end is missing stuff like that. I have no idea what do the letters mean, so my question if I need the exact model number or it is compatible with different ones.

    Any help is appreciated!

What did I do wrong with my update

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 12:54 PM PDT

I was running CrDroid 7.6 (unofficial) on my Galaxy S9 when I see that CrDroid released 7.7 for Galaxy S9 and my updater is notifying me. I click to update and it takes me to TWRP where it seems to be working. It begins to boot, but it gets stuck on the boot animation for a while and I decide to do a fresh install of 7.7. What did I do wrong? My device was encrypted and pattern protected if that is important.

Any free spam filter app that blocks spam emails before it reaches your email?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 07:53 AM PDT

One of my emails got compromised in a major data leak that happened in a website 3-4 years ago and I've been receiving almost dozens of Spam emails per day on that email. The Spam inbox gets so clogged and I end up having to clear my Spam inbox every week because of it.

Are there any third party Spam blockers on Android that might be able to help stop spam from reaching my email? So that I don't have to keep clearing it up regularly.

    Thanks!

Good cheap phone for custom ROMs

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 11:22 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am looking into getting a secondary phone that I can use to flash custom ROMs, root, and tinker with.

I was going to use my old Huawei P20 Lite that I upgraded from but it turns out that you need to physically take apart the device in order to unlock the bootloader which I don't have the tools for and there aren't many custom ROMs for that phone anyways.

I know people that have old Samsung and LG phones that they don't use anymore and are probably willing to give me but I heard that Samsung and LG phones are also hard to mod (not to the point that I'll need to physically take apart the device but still).

This is my first time modding an android phone and I want to know if it would be too difficult to unlock the bootloader of a Samsung or LG phone and if so what would be some good cheap phones to mod that would cost 200$ or less.

    Thank you.

PSA: Android 11, the gallery, and .NOMEDIA files

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 05:08 PM PDT

Hi there! This isn't a question so much as an "answer" - nobody had quite the whole answer to my problem, but after figuring it out I wanted to share the wealth.

After updating to android 11, my samsung galaxy a51 suddenly began showing ALL album covers from my music folder on my SD card. Odd, because previously I'd always used the .nomedia trick to make it ignore those images, and used a player that could in turn ignore the nomedia file. I don't WANT to sift through thousands of images so I can share a picture with a friend on discord, after all.

A few hectic hours of troubleshooting later, including using several different file explorer apps and my pc to try to create a new nomedia file in that folder (which had MYSTERIOUSLY VANISHED) it became clear that android was deleting the nomedia file and not allowing apps to create a new one. Why, I do not know. My fix was:

    1. using my pc/usb connection, renamed the "Music" folder to "My Audio" (you can rename it what you want, but I'd suggest something that both makes sense to you and won't be something commonly used by the android system)
    2. added a .nomedia file I copied from my mediaplayer's directory (i use BlackplayerEX) to "My Audio"
    3. re-scanned my music library, verified my playlists were now empty (HECK)
    4. backed up my playlist files to desktop (you're looking for .m3u files)
    5. used Textcrawler to find and replace the directory information, copied them back to my phone, and then re-imported them into Blackplayer. Textcrawler can be found here, but it is not mandatory if you have a similar app or know what you're doing in this step: https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/index.html

Was this an incredible hassle? absolutely. Do I hope my struggle helps someone? YES. From what I've gathered, this problem is affecting folks on various devices - not just samsung - but Android 11 seems to be the common factor. Other folks were apparently using .nomedia for their downloads folder (which at times can be nsfw or not something you want those around you to see) and I haven't figured out anything yet in that regard - your best bet might be to change the download location for certain apps, or start managing files in downloads and moving them to other uncommonly-named folders with .nomedia files in them. Good Luck!

(if this post belongs better elsewhere or needs flair please let me know and I will gladly move and/or fix it!)

EDIT: to anyone pointing out I can hide galleries or use a third party gallery app to exclude folders, this method also prevents those album cover art images from showing up in other apps when I want to share photos. The gallery app by itself will not do that.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 10:57 AM PDT

    /storage/emulated takes up 12G, but /storage/emulated/0 just 3.6G.

    what is using that 8.4G?

Note: I'm using shelter, could it be that?

And how would I shrink this, or isn't that possible?

Can't access most of the storage space on my phone

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 09:43 AM PDT

A while ago, I tried to install an app, and the installation failed several times. Since then, my phone says that almost all of my storage space is used, but all my apps and photos and such total just over 5 GB out of the 15 GB total. Is there a way to get the phantom space back, or do I need to reset the phone? Phone is a Samsung Galaxy J7 running Kitkat 4.4.111.

    Thanks for any help.

Google Play store doesnt work on Wifi for any device

The Messages app on my gf's pixel 4a has lost our thread multiple times with strange side effects. Can they be recovered and wtf is going on?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 08:08 AM PDT

    Sorry for the long explanation...

I have a pixel 3a and she has a 4a that's a few months old. When she switched from her Samsung to the pixel it moved all of her messages including our thread to the new phone. A month or so ago all the messages between us disappeared. I tried to research it and found that the problem exists with the messaging app in general but there were no real suggested solutions.

Sunday morning it happened again and the last month or so of messages are gone. The oddity in this case is that she had sent me a message (that I received) while I was asleep, my phone was off the charger and the battery died while I was sleeping. I awoke to find my phone was dead, I put it on the charger and after a minute or two I turned it on to see a message notification from her. I tried opening it but the phone died because my cable is wonky sometimes and the phone was only at 2%.

This all happened around 630 am. I went back to sleep and later in the morning awoke and we had a message exchange that included her lamenting our messages being gone again. However in the screen shot she sent it said "chatting with u/rec_desk_phone" and the time was 634 am. She said our thread was still at the top of her messages as if it was the most recent but there was nothing in it but that statement. She sent the screenshot of the empty thread with only the "chatting with..." message with the time stamp of 634 - right around the approximate time of my power-up and shutdown episode.

Because the thread remained high in her message list I'm inclined to think our messages might still "exist". A month ago we tried doing all kinds of cache clearing, deleting and reinstalling the app. I think we removed updates and then updated the app to be current. It was not successful at restoring our thread on her phone.

She had traumatic phone reset episode a few years ago where she lost a ton of data related to her now deceased mother and is very reluctant to reset the phone. It's not off the table entirely but I'm trying to exhaust all other options before making that choice. I think a reset might bring it all back since all her messages, including ours migrated automatically when she activated and signed in on the pixel 4a. The reservation is that whatever automatic backup that keeps those messages has probably backed up the now empty thread.

She has taken the loss of this document of our relationship pretty hard. The photos we've shared and communication during various events in our lives together are understandably something we both value. I still have all of our messages but there's no practical way to share it.

Aside from resetting, is there anything else we could try before taking that step? Phones are very personal documents of our lives and I'm very respectful of her reluctance to reset it. Not to mention the amount of little ways that a phone setup works for day to day life and work. This stuff never happens when there's a good chunk of time to work it out.

    Thanks for getting this far.
