| Starting a career in Android development without Computer Science degree? Posted: 09 Jul 2021 04:17 AM PDT Hi all, I have been self-teaching Kotlin/Java and have developed an Android app for around one year now, besides my non-CS related engineering degree, and am considering a "career switch" after graduation to pursue a software development career instead of an engineering career. However, without knowing any software developers, I struggle to compare my programming skills with others and struggle to find out if my skills would even come close to the skills required to step into a programming career. What I have done till now: I have never attended any programming course and started programming in the evenings only with the help of YouTube, Stackoverflow and other online sources. I soon had an idea for an app and started developing it step by step, firstly trying to figure out what I would need to add to the app and then trying to find the explanations on how to program it in the internet (probably the opposite way then how programming is taught in university). The app has become more and more complex with time and is now using the phone's hardware and has user customisation in the settings and so on. I have then published the app on Google Play roughly 8 months ago and have since tried to maintain and improve it besides my university course. It has currently 210k downloads, roughly 1.5k new downloads every day (slowly increasing), 91k MAU, 17k DAU and a rating of 4.7. Again, I have only developed this one app and had no further software engineering education yet, so am unsure where I am at in programming and if it is even remotely enough for a career switch. Do you think my experience in programming my app is enough to start applying for jobs or do you think I would need further education in general programming, algorithms, data structures and so on first? Is there maybe a free online course or course collection which I could attend, where I could be sure that if completed, I could reach the minimum skills for a career start? Any advice for the career switch in general? Cheers 😊 [link] [comments] | ||

| Can't get AVD to work on AS 4.2.2, keeps craahing Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:03 AM PDT I am new to android dev and trying to get my AVD to work, when I run the emulator outside of the dock the AVD will run for a second and then crash, I get the error message "Error while waiting for device: the emulator process for AVD was killed". I have tried multiple different devices and tried uninstalling and reinstalling but still can't get it to work, has anyone had this issue/ were you able to fix it? [link] [comments] | ||
| Server Side In App Purchase for Android Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:01 AM PDT I am trying to use the following in-app-purchase validation from the following: https://github.com/voltrue2/in-app-purchase For the configuration for Android/Google they are asking for the following info: googleServiceAccount: { clientEmail: '' privateKey: '' } I am unsure what they mean by `clientEmail`, as well as which `privatekey` they are referring to? Does anyone know where could I obtain it? Lastly, there is mention about the key paths: googlePublicKeyPath: 'path/to/public/key/directory/' googlePublicKeyStrSandBox: 'publicKeySandboxString' googlePublicKeyStrLive: 'publicKeyLiveString' I am able to get my `googlePublicKeyStrLive` from the developer console, but I am not sure where I can get my `googlePublicKeyStrSandBox`. Also not sure about the `googlePublicKeyPath` either, or even why this is needed, the validations would be done in the cloud? Any help would be really appreciated! [link] [comments] | ||

| How to implement in app billing library in android? Posted: 08 Jul 2021 10:30 PM PDT Hey I am new to android and I want to add an in-app purchase to remove ads in my app. I tried to read the documentation https://developer.android.com/google/play/billing/integrate but it is all very confusing for me. So far I have done is:- Created an app on play console and released it for internal testing Created merchant account and added the in-app purchase product to remove ads. Can someone please provide some tutorial on how to integrate the billing method in my app and explain in short about what the code does from the above link? And do I have to enable the developer API on play console to use in app billing or not? Looking for some positive response :) [link] [comments] | ||

| Trying out ad mediation with AdMob (horrible results) Posted: 09 Jul 2021 01:01 AM PDT Hello everyone, I've been a mobile developer for quite some time ago now, but I have never implement ads mediation in any of my apps, so recently I decided to give it a try and measure its effects. First of all, I choose a small app with a very small user base, just to know the basics. Once I understood that I move on and implemented mediation through Admob in one of my apps that has thousands of users. The results, for now, are extremely bad, I guess I am doing something wrong, here are the numbers:
As you can see, the fill rate is ridiculous, the eCPM is extremely low. I have always read in lots of articles and other people's comments that ad mediation is a key aspect of app monetization, so I think that I am probably doing something wrong because it doesn't make sense the hassle to manage all this for so little extra revenue. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] | ||
