I will be the tutor of a young Android Developer, how should I approach this?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 05:52 AM PDT

    Hi,

In the company I am working for there will be a young graduated student that will start soon. He is passionate about Android and I am looking forward to meeting him. From his resume, I see he only developed android in Java, so no Kotlin.

    • A question for everybody that was in my position (/or not), how should I handle this situation to be my best version for this young employee? I will handle tasks for him and provide him guidance, should I give him links to learn stuff or should I take a lot of time to explain different concepts? How should I make him learn kotlin? I cannot throw him in the project and make him do stuff.
    • And maybe a question for people that were in the same spot as him, did you wish something to be explained from a developer with higher experience? What was that thing?

What are some best practices when developing data based mobile apps?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 02:13 AM PDT

Hi. I have started to read up on mobile app development, and have a lot of experience with the financial data world, e. g. building/using databases, dax, sql, powerbi to give users information and analysis. My question for you is what is the best way to get data to the phone? Direct connection to some database or add in some middle layer restapi for security? My apps would be heavily based around data and analysis. I would assume you'd like to minimize the compute done on the mobile. Any other best practices to keep in mind? Thank you

Keyboard Long Key Press in Android WebVIew

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 06:47 AM PDT

Anyone have any ideas how to handle a long press of a keyboard key in Android WebView. I had assumed I would simply be able to use the KeyboardEvent repeat property (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/KeyboardEvent/repeat) but when I tested it with the following code, the repeat property returned is always false, despite holding a key down.

    document.addEventListener('keydown', logKey); function logKey(event) { console.log(event.repeat); }

The above code works as expected on a desktop browser and returns false once, then true repeatedly, while a key is held down. However in Android WebView, it repeatedly returns false.

Any ideas what the issue is, or an alternative way to handle a long keyboard key press?

To clarify, I'm trying to bind to the long press key event rather than ignore it. I want to trigger a function if a key is held down for a specified duration of time.

Any ideas are more than welcome...

Switching career to Android dev due to covid, where should i start?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 06:39 AM PDT

Heya, im a mechanical engineer with some knowledge in C,C++. i was on a job hunt in mech design field, with constant rejections im coping up with my life, then Covid happened which made me depressed even more. A family member told me to learn Android development as an extra skill which will be helpful and im here. How long does it take for one to become good with it Spending 10 hrs/week? And where should i start focusing? Free courses /resources will he helpful. How much can an entry lvl dev earn? and how secure is the job?

Note There are tons of tutorial videos with 10+hrs, which is an instant turnoff for me.

Thats it. Thanks for going through the post. Cheers

In-App reviews not working for me

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 04:45 PM PDT

In-App reviews not working for me

I have implemented Google's In-App reviews and my ratings average went down. It's very significant:

My app average ratings, by country, for the last 2 years

I've seen many posts of people having had good results with this mechanism. I'm wondering if I've done something wong and if in general people are really having good results with this library.

The problem with my app is that as it's a specialized compass, there's no "aha!" happy purchase moment to offer to rate. And it's an app many people install, use and remove, so I can't delay asking for ratings too much. I wonder if people with "tool" apps like mine had similar experiences.

I had a custom prompt before, nothing fancy. No fraudulent pseudo-rate, just asked nicely to rate. And it was much better and I'll probably go back to that. Thoughts? Comments?

Scoped storage: what is your opinion?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 08:23 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have just recently migrated my app to Scoped Storage. While I see the benefits of it (especially related to privacy), there are some aspects of it which makes Android development so much more difficult for special use cases. Let me give you some example:

    • My app loses editing access to all photos which it created when the app is reinstalled or the app storage is emptied.
    • When sharing photos, which the app created and has access to, from within the app via Intent, the location metadata (EXIF) is erased from the photos (even when the app has the ACCESS_MEDIA_LOCATION permission and "owns the files"). While negligible for many apps, some apps (including mine) heavily rely on the EXIF location metadata.

While great in general, the small details are the ones giving me a hard time and I increasingly struggle to find joy in Scoped Storage.

I am wondering what other Android developers think of Scoped Storage?

Mopub mediation only shows AdMob test ads

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 08:07 PM PDT

I have a house ad running in AdMob, so it should show up even in debug mode, when I enable test mode from the mopub dashboard I can see the ads, when I disable it however I get nothing except a log saying: No ads found for ad unit.

I went through the setup correctly and added my Admob Ad ID's in the networks tab in mopub dashboard, is this normal?

EDIT: Turns out, I must add "Orders" through the dashboard, everything's well now....someone needs to clean up the damn MoPub "documentation".

Learning unit testing on Android: Unresolved reference: isEqualTo

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 10:41 AM PDT

Hi, I'm learning unit testing on Android.

I picked this tutorial as starting point.

Now I have this unit test:

    import org.junit.Assert.assertThat import org.junit.Test import org.junit.runner.RunWith import org.junit.runners.JUnit4 @RunWith(JUnit4::class) class ValidatorTest { @Test fun whenInputIsValid(){ val amount = 100 val desc = "Some random desc" val result = Validator.validateInput(amount, desc) assertThat(result).isEqualTo(true) } @Test fun whenInputIsInvalid(){ val amount = 0 val desc = "" val result = Validator.validateInput(amount, desc) assertThat(result).isEqualTo(false) } }

Those `isEqualTo` are printed in red, saying "Unresolved reference: isEqualTo". And those two `assertThat` are striketroughed. saying "assertThat(String!, T!, Matcher<in T!>!): Unit' is deprecated. Deprecated in Java".

How to fix this? I'm using Android Studio Arctic Fox 2020.3.1 Beta 5, and have these 2 lines in my build.gradle:

    testImplementation 'junit:junit:4.13.2' testImplementation 'com.google.truth:truth:1.3'
