Posted: 20 May 2021 05:26 PM PDT The radical change in Pixel design is very welcome and much needed. It seems most people feel this is shaping up to be one of the better designed phones in recent memory. The sleek, bold design reminds me of some of the HTC phones when HTC was in it's heyday. I'm willing to bet this is the first phone designed from the ground up by the HTC team. I know Google has said the Pixel 4/5 were from that team, but it's possible the design concepts for those were already ready and the HTC team didn't have as much influence. Thoughts? I'm curious if others agree. [link] [comments] | ||

S7 Smartswitch Backup/Restore using SD card Posted: 20 May 2021 06:41 AM PDT This is a post for those like me who have no data at home due to location / $$ and want to do local backup/restore of their Galaxy S7 and like me, could not find a comprehensive guide. I have played around over the years trying combinations of Google backup and Samsung backup and Smartswitch (PC version). I found it was hit and miss as to completeness and satisfaction of restored phone afterwards. Though the Samsung cloud backup has I think most if not all of what Smartswitch has, it is dependant on data. I found Google back useless and though I do it for grins when I have wifi access, I don't really worry about it. I say this because I literally did a Google account backup right before wiping my phone and when I restored it and tried to restore the Google backup it said "device no recognized or some bull shit" Bottom line, Google backup sucked the big one.
My personal preference is to use Smartthings and with that, I do the backup to my SD card in the phone because it seems to have all the akp (programs themselves) plus everything else. Screen layouts, most (but not all of my settings so be sure to check your notifications and background data usage settings after the restore), etc.
*Prep Work * Update all app (avoids having to do a lot of updates after and creating unnecessary junk files). Backup contacts to SD card. Move all documents / files / pictures to SD card. Backup Secure Folder to cloud or move everything temporarily to SD card. 2FA - Make a temporary note of Backup Codes for all email addresses (makes it easy to re-login after if the SMS method doesn't work right). -You will have to re-login to all apps/accounts but restoring email first will make all these other ones easy to do.
Smartswitch Run it and select SD card backup. For me, this was a little icon of a memory card on the top right of the screen. My SD card showed a folder created that was about 4GB in size when this was completed, yours will be whatever it is.
Point of No Return – Wipe! Boot into Recovery Mode (Volume UP & Home button & Power button, release when it vibrates). Wipe data/factory reset. Wipe cache partition (aka: Dalvik Cache). Reboot.
Restore Phone As soon as you can get into the menu system, turn off your cell data or prior to rebooting remove sim card. Turn on wifi. Don't bother with setting much up during the 'Welcome" screens, you will nuke all this once you restore the Smartswitch image. Go into Playstore and disable automatic updates (at least for now because you are about to overwrite everything with the Smartswitch restore).
Smartswitch Log into Samsung account so you can use Smartswitch. Run it and force Smartswitch to update. (this is why I turned on wifi). I didn't realize my factory reset version was older than the version I had made the backup with. As a result Smartswitch kept asking me for a password to open my backup. I hadn't used one! After I updated Smartswitch, it worked perfectly with no password required. Obviously if you make your backup with a password, then you will need to enter it to open it now. Run up to date version of Smartswitch and select SD card recovery.
Setup Phone You don't have to but maybe let your phone do it's thing while Smartswitch restores all your screen layouts, settings (as best it can) etc. Mine took 1 hour. Go find something to do. All done and ready to play…Setup all your email accounts and google account. Log in to all your apps.
Complete.

6GB vs 8GB RAM considerations + mini tests Posted: 20 May 2021 04:56 AM PDT Recently I bought a Galaxy Tab S7+, version with 6GB of RAM, And actually I started very much thinking if I had made a mistake not choosing the 8GB version TLDR: 6GB gives you around 3GB of memory for your applications, which might be restrictive on tablet devices (like 5-10 tabs open in Chrome) Generally people (as this was a sale) choose the 6GB first (I bouth the last one), also with premium devices the price for additional RAM/storeage seems to be overblown (but here to be honest it was not that much: 80$ for 2GB and 128GB of storage more). For a long time I had a Windows 10 mini PC with only 4GB (and virtual memory turned off) There, as I remeber Windows 10 (old version) took around 1.1 GB + some of the mermory left was inaccesible I could only manage to have 2.4GB used by the web browser, but that often caused firfox to crash when more than 5 tabs were open I expected that Android will use less RAM (that is <1GB) and most of the memory will be accesible to the user. When I turned on the device I have had like 3GB free RAM and 2.5GB used by the system + 0.5GB reserved Around 0.5 of that were standard Apps and Services, but clearing them did not change much (as they are frequently restarted) Hoping that most of it will be some kind of cache I created a html/javascript program which just creates some data in memory (hopeing that Android would free whatever memory is used by cache) PS: Generally I wanted to test it on a web browser/Chrome, as I think the main issue here (or for me) will be having a lot of tabs open. PS: The Chrome seems to have a limit of 1GB per web page so I had to open few tabs PS: I cleared the apps from memory very ofter (every check) When I incresed the memory usage by Chrome till WebPages started to be restarted I could get 3.5GB of free user space, after a crash and doing a mermory cleanup. Generally the DEX uses few hundred of MB, so with stable chrome I saw it use 3.8 GB in normal mode and around 3.5 in DEX mode I also sometimes saw Chrome RAM usage around 4.1 GB but then basically it became unstable (when you came back to Chrome one of the tabs would be restarted) Also I never managed to get free memory below 0.5 GB, near this value always one tab was restarted So it looks like you will have around 3GB free of memory for usage with a device which has 6GB Which translates into something like 10 tabs open assuming they use 300mb (which seems to be the case on avergae for websites which I look at) PS: 300 MB (till 500) seems to be also the memory usage of my Galery App and PDFs readers Also the test pages only create data with no UI; normal pages sometimes tend to at startup use up 700-800 MB and after a while they will settle on 300mb This was a problem with the mini PC, as sometimes the web browser would crash on 5th oppened page. For telephones having being able to open like 5-10 tabs is not that important, but with DEX it is on the edge of being restrictive [link] [comments] |
