What would be the best streaming solution for my parents? Posted: 10 May 2021 05:27 AM PDT Hello, I'm a bit new to all these streaming boxes, so bear with me. I want to choose a tv box for my parents. Nothing fancy like the Shield TV since they won't game or anything like that. They would like to watch Netflix, HBO Go, YouTube and my idea is to setup LAN streaming with VLC and Plex Media Server so they can stream local video files from PC when away from home. It's mandatory that the device runs Android TV OS. I initially eyed the new Chromecast with Google TV, but what puts me off is that it's not officially supported in my country so they may encounter some crippled functionality (Google TV missing, etc.). I prefer to stay away from Xiaomi devices because of the mixed experiences people have with these. All in all, I would like a device that once setup would require no serious fiddling around (this means no sideloading .apks or any other shenanigans every now and then just to make it work). For now I'm looking at MECOOL KM2 but open to any suggestions (around that price range). I'm located in Eastern Europe. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Google TV turns itself on and makes Bluetooth contact? Posted: 10 May 2021 05:24 AM PDT I've been experiencing a strange issue where my Google TV (2020) seemingly turns itself on or just does not turn off. I sometimes watch Netflix on it with my headphones (Sony WH-1000XM2) and when I am done I turn off both my TV and the Google TV device with each their own remote. When I then continue to use my headphones on my laptop, listening to music, I suddenly get a "Bluetooth connected" prompt through the headphones, indicating that it has reconnected to the Google TV. There are no other devices that it can connect to. When I turn on the TV again, the Google TV is not "on" but when I then turn it on, with its own remote, it turns on very quickly. So my hunch is that Google TV has some kind of slumber mode and that when you turn it "off" it actually goes to sleep. From time to time it will then handshake with previously paired devices so that if a user turns it on, it can quickly resume what it should be doing without a long cold start. Another reason might be that it does the Bluetooth check for location tracking. Does that make sense? Has anyone else experienced such Bluetooth "problems"? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 May 2021 10:32 PM PDT ok, we all don't like the new android tv ad ridden launcher and know delaying the update can only do so much until it's forced upon us. i don't know who said this but someone suggested changing the package name to get android to think it's a different app so it will install and we can enjoy Play Next without seeing an ad for Disney+. so i started my journey of trying to do this myself and sharing the info with others so they can also enjoy the spoils of war (didn't go as intended but at least i have info that i can share so someone else can continue my work). i first downloaded the last version of the launcher that doesn't have ad's (2.0.10-307630529-f) and tried opening it in 7z to see if i could change the manifest xml file that way. no dice, it's in a proprietary format that your average text editor can't work with. so i googled a manifest editor and came across this github repository: https://github.com/WindySha/ManifestEditor and it worked, i put the manifest xml into a copy of the original and tried installing it on a android tv image you can use via android studio aaaaaand... signature not valid. to be honest i was kinda expecting this so i looked at the rest of the editor to see if it has a signing feature and it does! so i go and us the -s parameter which takes the signed apk and applies it to the modified unsigned apk and got a error saying i needed jarsigner, ok i'll download a copy and put it into the same folder as my editor. i found the signer (https://github.com/Jamling/jarsigner) and found out that i needed to compile it. thats when i decided to share where i am at so someone else can take a crack at it cause it's one of those things that i just don't have the energy to continue and have to go though more potential road blocks (i have enough of that in my real life, i don't need anymore). if anyone wishes to take this on then go ahead, i'm gonna go and waste away in bed until i am back to normal. Full HD Display (1080p) but clarity differs in Native YouTube App and Android Box YouTube App. Posted: 10 May 2021 02:32 AM PDT I bought a vu 43ga smart tv, I also own a android box. I played a 1080p video on both Native YouTube tv app and Android box. Android box YouTube app gave better video output as compared to Native YouTube App. Also I have changed the native resolution to 1080p from 720p using adb. Still the clarity is no where near the android box output. Is there a way to improve the OS experience because TV does great in android box. [link] [comments]

Chromecast w/ Google TV kids profile shows dark profile then switches back over and over Posted: 09 May 2021 11:01 AM PDT So I'm having an issue with the kids profile on the Chromecast with google TV. We setup a kids profile and it seemed easy enough. So after we try to find something the screen keeps showing what looks like a dark profile with greyed out boxes, then cuts back to the kids profile. It does this over, and over and over with no end as far was we can tell. Has anyone had this issue? If so how did you fix it? I would love for the kids to have profiles but this is a big pain in the butt. [link] [comments]
Sideloading...is there much of a point? Posted: 09 May 2021 03:41 PM PDT Recently got an Android TV and since I've been using Android phones and tablets forever I figured there wouldn't be much of a learning curve. Immediately added file transfer and management apps and followed all the appropriate steps to sideload about 15 apps I'm used to from both my phone and from my previous Roku and...a grand total of one app functioned. I tried to solve the frequent orientation problems with a separate app, which helped that issue. But it seems almost all of them these days are designed strictly for touchscreen tapping and it seems pretty much impossible to move a cursor or even find one so you can click on things. Am i missing something? Is there yet another fix I should be trying? Or should I just accept that sideloading doesn't really do anything except waste time? [link] [comments]
Help needed input button - Google TV with Sony Bravia Posted: 09 May 2021 10:10 AM PDT HDMI-CEC is enabled on my tv. I have two devices - Stb and the Chromecast. Till a couple of days ago, I didn't need to tap the input button on the Chromecast remote to switch to the input for Google TV. You tap home, YouTube anything and it'd switch. It's helpful as input button is IR based, while the rest are not so you don't need to point to change input. This has suddenly stopped working. Meaning if I do the above it won't work and similarly if I switch on the tv using Chromecast remote and a different input was selected, it won't auto switch to Chromecast input. Doesn't seem to a problem with the tv as the STB pressing any button switches to the STB input. I tried updating Chromecast, restarting it, remapping buttons, just doesn't work anymore : any tips guys? [link] [comments]
YouTube missing titles [Android tv] Posted: 09 May 2021 12:38 PM PDT Hello quick question, I noticed recently on the YouTube app, it doesn't show the title of the video anymore while you're watching it. Normally while you're watching a YouTube video you can push up on the remote or push the display button and it will show the video title. Now when you do it, it shows nothing. Anyone know if there's a way to show the video title while watching? [link] [comments]
Where is the ‘connect’ button in Bluetooth settings? Posted: 09 May 2021 11:12 AM PDT I'm using a MiBox 4, sometimes with my AirPods, however I have to re-pair every time I want to use my AirPods. Is there a quicker way? [link] [comments] |
