Change Toast notification color on Android 11 with Xblast [Magisk] [Edxposed] Posted: 10 May 2021 11:21 AM PDT If anyone was wondering... Xblast from a million years ago works on LOS 18 (Android 11) to change the color of toast notifications :)... The default white background hurts my eyes so I wanted to find a way to darken it... XIAOMI POCO F3/REDMI K40 DETAILED REVIEW Posted: 10 May 2021 08:50 AM PDT This is a detailed review from an owner's perspective, I will get into it without introductions, this is the global f3 (regular, not f3 pro) edition with 256GB internal storage and 8GB of RAM (codenamed alioth). I got this phone for exactly $352. First thing which is the obvious, the design, the phone looks good, tiny bezels without notch, and the circular camera modules on the back look stunning, coupled with great colors (Mine is black, it has slightly grey/navy tint and looks absolutely stunning. one take about the design is the camera hump, most modern phones have humps but this one has tiny hump that gets leveled when coupled with the cover the phone came with, so its not a big deal, but if placed without cover it would stick out, its still a camera hump. the specs of this phone has gorilla glass 5 for the front and the back, gorilla glass 5 is a bit oldgen, especially when considering there are gg6 and ggv out there, but gg5 for both front and back is good for a phone in this price category. DISPLAY: An e4 (I guess?) amoled which is the most disappointing part of the phone. first, I was taken with the 120hz refresh rate and the AI engine, but then, I figured out its about the only good thing about that display. this phone is marketed as an HDR display smartphone, Although many reviews state that it has 8 bit, 8 bit is NOT HDR, an HDR display should come with 8bit+frc atleast, however it has a 1080p display that I wouldn't even consider 8 bit, its more of a 6bit+frc,that coupled with the fact that it's 1080p, makes the color depth so horrendous, that even when using the highest quality pictures, or the phones own wallpaper, in blurred area or such, you see some of the nastiest color banding you ever seen, its so bad that it has more color banding than any 8 bit display I have ever seen. Color reproduction wise: average color reproduction, the whites are tinted in orange regardless of what mode you put the display in, original colors just make them yellow tinted. p3 is very slightly different in terms of white, its less saturated and gives less colors I think. UPDATE: color reproduction turned out to be fine, altered by settings, color reproduction is fairly accurate, I've only seen better on flagships, which makes it good, however, altering the settings didn't work with the color depth, it stayed relatively the same. brightness wise I don't think this phone is +1000nits as marketed, infact I dont think any phone is, and when in max auto sunlight mode, its not near a galaxy or an iphone in terms of brightness. I think its more of a 600-ish display, so far I've only heard +1000 nits talk, yet I have to witness one. however this phone is fairly bright and usable, just not the most optimal for outdoor walking in sunny environments, or under direct sunlight. for a 2021 phone this is a disaster imo, I would rather use 2016 axon 7 to view sub 90hz content, at least it had higher resolution. that's how bad it's color depth is. xiaomi could at least made the resolution higher. or made it a true HDR device. CAMERA: this phone has 3 cameras, main, macro and wide angle, no ois whatsoever, Im not a cameraguy and I don't take much pictures with my phone, but I can tell you this phone has average camera performance, it has noticable level of artifacts and noise, but it keeps it within acceptable boundaries, just average, low light is a hit and miss, HOWEVER, this phone doesn't have 4k 60fps support, and for a 2021 phone with cutting edge hardware this is pretty lame. this means the camera sensors/module for this phone is pretty old and cheap to not include that. I did manage to shoot 4k 60fps tho, with gcam, however no official gcam has been made for this phone, only some workaround version I found in xda, which did the job, except that it couldn't shoot slowmo, also the selfie cam can only shoot 1080p 30fps videos, yikes! the portrait mode has to be the biggest joke in 2021, and I dont mean the selfie shooter only but the back camera too! it literally has the same portrait as those knockoff phones that claim to have 5 camera setups, but when you dismantle them you see only 1 sensor, its the same thing except you have 3 sensors, because that depth of field is so fake and artificial, I turned everything AI related off and that dof is just blurring the area around the object with visible leftovers, it's laughable. besides that, the phone produces consistent results in medium to good lighting conditions, and sometimes with lowlight, video performance is ok, the only thing I can say about it that its better than older gen smartphones. PERFORMANCE: SD870G, UFS 3.1, 8GB LPDDR5 the phone doesn't provide a noticable difference to phones from previous gens, if you're coming from sd865 or even sd855 phone, you wouldn't notice big difference in performance levels, in popular games like pubg mobile it still have frame drops and such. also it has the same level of smoothness, also it's not that efficienct, it gulps current in 400ma only, each moment, so if you're coming from 2019 or 2020 top flagship just to get better performance for cheap price, don't do it. Also the flash speed of ufs 3.1 of this phone is...meh, I did androbench for this phone and it turns out last years rog phone 3 is noticably better, and similar to the s20 (which is a ufs 3.0 device) , I got 1500MB/s for seq. read, 572MB/s for seq. write (meh) and 180ish for both random read and write, that's lame for ufs 3.1 speeds since last year ufs 3.1 could beat it. overall performance is smooth, the phone boots in 10-17 seconds maximum, even though I loaded it with apps. The phone is smooth for daily use, it provides seamless daily usage experience, the only time there are noticable level of lagging is straight after booting it. exporting videos is quick and doesn't take much time for 480p and social media vids, as for editing 2k-4k photos its near instant, what I admire about the phone tho is the thermal management, it stays fairly at 40c with medium use even tho I am using it in very hot environment, that's very good from xiaomi. SPEAKERS: Speaker-wise, this phone has dual speaker setup, one bottom firing speaker, and one front earpiece that also has additional opening on the top. The speakers lack serious bass, the sound signature is best described as bright and tiny, only the bottom firing speaker produces a little of what I call actual bass, and the rest of the sound is just the two speakers combined, bombarding the air with 3-4khz sound. That is without dolby. This phone was marketed to come with dolby atmos, however, you get your phone out of the box and there's no dolby atmos... what's wrong? well, you have to update the phone to miui 12.0.3 in this case, to get dolby however, you wouldn't get this update from the phone lol! you have to download it manually and install it by recovery or miflash tool. SPEAKERS WITH DOLBY: This is where it gets good, I tried equalizing the phone before dolby, using neutron/poweramp, and I tried my best to make it deliver, however the sound came noisy, compressed and lacked air. so I turned that off. Dolby however magically boosted the bass, it even made the phone produce more vibrations, its like nothing I have heard with this phone, its like some voodoo stuff, and I've had dolby on older phones but its not as big as the difference I saw in this, believe me it worths the update, and while it still had that 3-4k massive hump, I put it on music preset and lowered mids and it became super sweet for any song and very natural sounding, mids were too good, bass was punchy and treble was biting, however it wasn't as loud as without dolby and eqing, I guess with dolby it gets to 82-86ish db, on average, while it gets to 88ish on average without dolby. so its not as loud as other phones. so its fairly average overall. HEADSET AUDIO: ok so this phone doesn't come with a headset I think, I dont even care enough, I use my own headset. So this phone, Idk, maybe the dongle is just buffering something and the dac is in the phone? amps must output in analog, so my guess the amp is in the dongle, I am not keen about dongle "physix" , but what Im sure of: this is the worst sounding phone without 3.5mm jack, I like to believe that phones with headphone jack can sound better than any phones without headphone jacks after using the axon 7 and giving some modern lg v lineup a try and comparing them to current iphones and galaxies, so this means that its the worst sounding phone ever, phones with dongles can sound good, like iphones and galaxies, this is just the rock bottom of dongle audio. the sound signature is dark, heavily muffled, the bass is not clean, the treble is cutoff, I had equalized my headsets on other phones prior to this phone, I used the same equalization for the headset and it did nothing like it did in other phones, also I supposed that 2021 phones audio should improve on dynamic range and such, this phone gave some additional noticable "ticks" that wasn't supposed to be there in quite parts, that I never happen to hear on any other phone. so its both a colored sound signature and a noisy performance, that is what makes it the worst, heck, even my very old nokia 5 was more neutral sounding than this thing. so if you are keen on audio, get yourself a dac/amp portable combo, plain and simple, dont think twice about it. sadly for my case, Im getting studio headphones, and driving them correctly on this would be the joke of the century. MICROPHONES: Just don't know exactly how many mics this phone has, maybe 3, however they are just ok, they dont provide deep rich sound, but they're fairly loud, I would call them perfect for making calls, but I tried recording myself in stock app and dolby on record, it was just tiny sounding and cringy. CHARGING AND BATTERY LIFE: The phone comes with 4520mah, it lasts me 8 hours with medium to heavy usage, however I don't play games, I only edit small vids, pics, browse heavily and do root stuff, so it could be even less than that. like 7 hour-ish or 6 and half. which is decent. HOWEVER I am entitled to think that the optimal battery capacity should be 6000mah, the reason for that is batteries degrade with time, your poco f3 will end up being a sub 3000mah phone after 2 years if you keep being a medium to heavy user profile, so you'll have to buy yourself a phone after a couple of years. or have the guts to dismantle it and replace the battery, that's if you're lucky enough to find reasonable priced batteries for this phone after 2 years. Also Fast charging in 2021 should be 65w only, 33w fills it about 1 hour and 10 minutes, reviews say 1 hour flat, but it's not the case for me, also if you're gaming and charging, good luck! that will be an additional two hours to the charging time, with temps reaching 55, but not exceeding it, again I have to admire the thermal management of this phone. FEATURES AND OTHERS: This phone has usb 2.0, yucky, and you know, 2021...usb 2.0... However, this phone boasts an IR blaster, I couldn't believe it! a phone from 2021 having an ir blaster! I thought it was extinct, I use it for my acs, fans, tv etc, it became so useful for me. other things like connectivity, I found the phone to get better wifi signals than the rest of the phones I used, I stay in 2nd floor and the router is in 1st floor, but this thing doesn't drop a single bar. NFC does not work for me, I don't even use it, I just use it for file transfer, I tried the restore nfc functionality in hope to make nfc file transfer happen again, but it didn't work, so be careful if you really want nfc! check it at the store. MODDING AND SOFTWARE: unlocking the bootloader and such was somehow slow, apparently for xiaomi devices you have to wait 7 days, also I was unaware and careless, I felt like I could trust google top results from quora and such which was like "xiaomi unlock isn't regular unlock and doesn't wipe your data" which I gladly took, till I was met with the inevitable, because unlocking WIPES EVERYTHING ON YOUR XIAOMI DEVICE! I moved a lot of files to my poco f3, I had a backup, but sadly it wasn't a recent one, however thankfully nothing of value was lost. however Im still annoyed that BL unlocking wipes data, why is this even a thing? I don't remember any phone that wipes data when unlocking bl, or maybe my memory isn't correct about that detail since I haven't unlocked a phone for quite a long time. Rooting the phone was another pain in the rear, googling root for poco f3 will give you....nothing benefitable, some results suggest that you should flash xiaomi.eu ROM then doing a ton of steps, which made me depressed. however I was ought to take another risk and just follow regular magisk steps, download firmware, get boot.img and patch it. HOWEVER! since I was updated to 12.0.3 to get dolby as I mentioned earlier, I found out the firmware has no boot.img in it, I tried to get the fastboot version of it, I did not found it anywhere! So I stuck with this one day until I gave up and decided to download 12.0.2 and get its boot.img, patch it and hope its the same as 12.0.3 boot.img, which was correct, and now that is the happy ending to this story. conclusion? you're better of buying a oneplus if you like modding. easy and simple solution, don't even think it twice, the extra price worths it. as for the software, forget all the rumors about MIUI, its literally propaganda! MIUI is super smooth, I heard folks complaining that the UI is laggy and such, just put it to 120hz and marvel at how smooth it is, yes it does drop to 60hz when throttling, that's one thing to note tho, but in optimal conditions it's as smooth as it can be, no lag, 0 framedrops, the only exception is the google cards on home, which lags on pretty much every phone ever. MIUI packs a decent amount of features, the dark mode is application-level, meaning it turns every application you have to beautiful black bg, and screenrecord records internal audio and lets you edit the capture on the spot, just what you need. And thats all for the POV of me using the poco f3. [link] [comments] |
