Some things I did to improve privacy (and battery life?) Posted: 04 May 2021 07:48 AM PDT (Everything I did was without rooting my phone) I love my Noki 7plus, but when I got it, it was just insane how much bloatware (Evenwell or Google) there was. With all that facebook criticism about privacy, I really wonder why there is really nothing like that concerning Google. I personally dont like google to know everything, gather personal data, have access to my files, personal notes, Photos, searches and more. So here are a few things I did before I was comfortable using my phone (those things are subjective of course and I am no expert) - I used AppInspector, Minimal ADB and Fastboot and the tips from this page to delete a lot of unnessecary bloatware - I deleted google search, Google Chrome, Google Fotos, Google Files, Gmail, Google News, Google Notes, Google Drive and google calendar AND the google keyboard (what is the use of good apps if google saves every input you put into your keyboard?) - Every app I can find there, I download from F-Droid, a privacy-focused app store for ad-free open source apps (every app gets checked and many get removed because of bad functions, every app has just the permissions it needs) -> a few Apps I can recommend: - Carnet for taking Notes, has all the funcions of Google notes. The Nextcloud Sync did some bad stuff to my files, so I sync the folder "manually" through autosync using the Nextcloud App, ever time my phone charges. (Android/data/com.spisoft.quicknote/files/) and have full control and transparency - Simple Gallery Pro, File Manager and Music player from Simplemobiletools (shows hidden folders and is very customizable, the contacts app is also better than the google one I think) - Fito Track and openWorkout for Sports - LTE Cleaner as a really good cleaning program - LibreAV as Anti-Virus Software - Tasks.org for To-Do Lists, Etar as a good Calendar App - AnySoft Keyboard, with a bit customization its perfect. Doesnt have autocorrect tho (I turned it off anyways as I dont want weird corrections, I prefer readable spellos) - Red Moon as a perfect bluelight-filter (as the system integrated one isnt really strong) - a good offline dictionary instead of google translate - of course Firefox with a few privacy Add-Ons and duckduckgo or Startpage as search engines - Wire instead of Whatsapp or Telegram, free, always ETEE (End to end encrypted), can run on multiple devices, is open source - I got Nova Launcher premium, but until google allows 3rd party launchers to use gestures, it is useless poorly. I got it to make my device faster, but I will have to wait, maybe it gets never implemented (cant open recent apps right now and multitask) - Mega.nz as an encrypted Cloud storage, on my phone I also use MegaSync, you can only synchronize one folder with the free version but thats ok. I use the Nextcloud server of my university, pretty damn handy, I sync from my phone to the server and from the server to my laptop. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know that this isn´t perfect, as I have Youtube, Whatsapp and Google Maps, as there are no good/ commonly used alternatives and I wasnt able to convince many people to change at least the messenger. But I try to keep it low. - enable developer settings and see what you find useful, I turned on USB-Debugging (needed for ADB) and disabled all animations, making my phone faster. You can limit background processes too, but there is a debate if that doesnt decrease battery life. I heard using Greenify or other apps should help, what is your state of knowledge? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Privacy settings: - Check out the permissions of every app, turn off what you dont want it to do. There are some apps (you would´t find them on F-Droid) that have A TON with no visible use for yourself. Especially location, microphone, body activity and calendar are some would absolutely turn off or swith to "only when app is running in the foreground" - You may disable googles automatic fill in - I would turn off googles location history and delete whats already existing - Turn off customized ads in your google account, should provide a bit less sourvaillance of your online activities, if you trust Google... - Diagnostics data is something difficult, as it may be helpful to improve the software, but I turned it off. - I disabled, that my device would improve GPS through Wifi or mobile data information, as well as switching off the permission that it could search for nearby Wifis and Bluetooth devices even when turned off - In the google settings I turned off Tracking (Web and App activities, Youtube timeline, location history) and deleted what was already there ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battery: - I have two home screens, as I deinstalled the clock app and the google search engine, I only have one weather widget and the widget of Tasks.org. The weather app is from F-Droid, very customizable with changable refreshing intervals and no transparency, so it shouldn´t eat up a lot of battery (as I am german I use "Kleine Wettervorschau", can realy recommend) - I have my device on dark mode and wallpapers and chat backgrounds too, as the display is the number one battery user. - I turn off Bluetooth, GPS, Wifi and mobile data off when possible, at night I have it on flight mode -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am curious, have i forgotten something important? If you did, what did you do to make the device you payed money for more like your own? I look forward for more tips, especially about battery life. (As I am german I may have named some settings etc. by the wrong name, keep that in mind) EDIT: couldnt be submitted because of several links, I linked some apps I named to make downloads easier, seems as if thats forbidden. The yellow dictionary with the name already in said word (the one Reddit doesnt allow me to write?) Is good btw. EDIT2: A bad thing I did was remove file manager using ADB (not google files) as I use the one from simplemobiletools all the time. But it is needed to grant second party apps the permission to use the SD card. As it isnt completely uninstalled, you can reactivate it though, it opens when needed, but there is no icon.
