Is there a faster/better way to thumb up/down videos?

Currently it's 6 to 7 clicks on the remote. The app needs a long press option.

Android TVs have the same problem as Android

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 07:30 AM PDT

Hear me out. For a long time Android phones were, and still are by many, thought of as shit. Now a real Android enthusiast knows the difference between an S series and a what the fuck even is that Android phone series. However, the layman doesn't. They don't separate the hardware from the software.

This same cycle is now evident in Android TV devices. Look at this sub. Nearly every post about something having giant failures is some no name tv running Android. Others, like there one that inspired this post, are from low end brands like Xiaomi. The enthusiasts know to buy a separate box and the shield tv is the defacto gold standard.

You look at a sub like cordcutters when best device is asked, there are so many people responding Apple TV. Apple's lockdown of software makes all Apple TV devices perform at the same level. If someone's only interaction with Android TV is on a shit devices they believe all Android TV is shit and they're not going to want to drop money on an expensive device. Whereas any interaction with apple tv is identical, the consumer has faith their money will be well spent.

We need more Android TV devices so we get more developer support but just in the last year this sub has went from - my shitty Chinese Android box - to my shitty no-name Android TV. The Android brand once again takes a beating from it's open source nature and Google's push to get it widely adopted.

Not sure what the solution is, but i can't imagine the trend changing. A shitty soc in a tv with a few gb of storage and you can to market it as a smart TV. It's hard to blame the manufacturers.

Chromecast with Google TV randomly changes volume without user interaction.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 12:40 AM PDT

For the past week, after a factory reset, I've been getting random prompts on my screen saying "Use a remote to adjust the volume. See Chromecast settings on this TV for more options." on certain apps even when I'm not touching the remote. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I've already uninstalled and reinstalled the YouTube, Hulu, and HBO Max apps I've experienced this issue with. I've factory reset the remote and reinstalled the remote firmware. Surround sound is turned off and the Chromecast is connected directly to the TV and set to allow the remote to control the tv volume. As an experiment, when I've set the Chromecast to allow the remote to control its own volume and its set to 100 volume instead of that prompt the volume bar drops to 50% randomly.

Google TV app refuses to acknowledge premium services

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 06:15 AM PDT

I recently downloaded the Google TV app for my pixel 3 and it doesn't want to display anything at all from the premium services that I have selected. I have basically every streaming service out there but the app will ONLY show tubi, Pluto and Crackle. It even shows me a rental price for movies that I have access to through other apps. It only shows that access once I actually go in to the movie info page.

I also have the new Google TV Chromecast and everything works fine on that. That will show movies from Disney, Amazon, Hulu...tv shows from things like CBS, NBC, etc. It seems to only be an issue with the app on my phone.

I took a few screenshots to show what my recommended page and settings look like, as well as the rental price despite having Disney+.

    Any help is appreciated.

Is there an ad muter for live TV?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 06:59 PM PDT

I sideloaded an app called ad-free on my phone that automagically mutes Spotify ads. Is there a similar app for live TV on an Android TV?

Is the xiaomi mi tv stick good enough for chromecasting 1080p?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 04:40 PM PDT

I've been wanting to upgrade my 1st gen chromecast to a chromecast device with an interface, remote and bluetooth support. Currently for me it's between the chromecast with google tv, xiaomi mi tv stick and xiaomi mi tv s. In my region the mi stick is definitely the cheapest option at 30€ with the others costing around 60-70€. However, I've heard some bad things about the xiaomi mi tv stick's performance. If I'll mostly be casting to it, not browsing, using apps etc., that shouldn't be a problem, right? I'd like to hear from anyone who has used the mi stick as a chromecast decvice if it works well enough for that purpose. Also, if there is any major reason to spend more on the nicer chromecast compatible devices please tell me.

Bluetooth controllers not working right with hisense 55h8g?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 08:50 PM PDT

Hi. I just got my hisense 55h8g and have been trying to use bluetooth controllers, eventually hoping to play retroarch.

Ps4 controller: kinda works, does triple inputs or no inputs frequently, unusable.

Xbox one controller: does not show up to pair with the tv.

Switch pro controller: same as ps4 controller.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I turned off wifi hoping it was interfering, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

    Management at scale?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 12:39 PM PDT

Has anyone managed AndroidTV in any sort of 'large scale' scenario (more than 5 :D)?

I'm looking to deploy ~35 TVs in a school and am curious about any tips or tricks to make the setup consistent and speedy since I'll have to customize a bit and turn on restrictions.

The TVs will primarily be used for Airplay 2 and Chromecast.

Player with Network Streaming and AudioPassthrough

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 12:12 PM PDT

I have tried Kodi, VLC and Mx player pro.

Kodi works fine if I complete the movie in one go. The moment I pause the video, I have to start it again. ( blackscreen with audio, casting to Kodi over DLNA) There are many audio-cuts as well during playback.

Vlc and Mx player don't provide surround sound even when audio pass through setting is enabled.

Is there any other option available for me to play streams with surround sound.

Does anyone know what can be done with a MiniM8Spro android box that was used as RvealTv? Can it be factory reset and loaded with new content?
