What's the best app for remotely controlling, monitoring, managing childrens' android devices

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 07:35 AM PST

I'm looking to get my son set up with a phone, but I want total control over his device. I've seen a number of parental management apps, but being in IT, I was wondering if there is something more involved I could consider as an option. Any suggestions?

Previous to Android 11 you used to be able to move the navigation bar to either left, center or right. This made the 3 buttons grouped together and much smaller making one handed use easier. Anyone know if it's still possible?

Seems I don't have the choice anymore. This is how it used to be done.

    New Update Lock Screen Changes

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 10:00 AM PST

After last night's update I no longer see the player on the lock screen. On the lock screen, if I pull down, reveal the entire drawer, then push up then I can see the player. In notifications the setting is turned on for On Lock Screen. The app also shows that the lockscreen notifications are on. The apps I'm having issues with is Podcast Addict and Spotify. Also, calendar, text, and any other notifications that normally display in the lock screen also show up as a small bar, then you have to click on that bar to expand, then click on it again to see the full text. Is there a way to fix this? I guess, essentially the lock screen functionality is completely broken after the update.

    Phone not recognised by Windows.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 07:46 AM PST

My Nokia C1 is not being recognised. And I think it is something to do with the phone itself. I have tried countless methods. Any method a YouTube video shows you, you bet I have tried it.

So I decided I should plug it in another different Windows PC. Didn't work. Which leads to my conclusion that the phone is the problem.

Is there any way to fix this?

Is there an app that you can use to transfer files from PC over to Phone?

How to disable system updates on LG V60?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 05:53 AM PST

Hello all. I'm on Android 10 with a T-mobile LG V60 and I'm getting a notification for the Android 11 update.

Now I realize that most people would want the latest and greatest OS on their phone, but there are reasons I want to stick with 10 for now.

Is there a guaranteed way to stop it from forcing an update?

I went into the developer options and turned off "automatic system updates" but when I go into the update center it still says "restart phone to update" and there's a "Restart now" button at the bottom.

My question is basically... if I reboot my phone normally, but holding the power button for a bit and reboot... will it still update on me or am I safe do to so?

    Thanks!

UK user: Want to upgrade from Hauwei P20 Pro to P40 Pro, need to know what apps I can use and How

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 09:27 AM PST

So Love my P20, most solid, reliable phone I have ever had but all things come to an end. Obviously now Hauwei's come without google support so I am wondering if I should stick with the P40 Pro or look elsewhere?

My priority is massively getting the best camera I can. I don't really game on my phone. Secondly it would be internet browising, I use google chrome as my browser, and WhatsApp as my main message service. I also use the Instagram and Twitter apps but happy to access those in browser if need be. My other important app would be my Dog Tracker Nano app in case the mutt goes walkabout. I also use google maps. Also a banking app.

Would I have real difficulty replicating any of that on the P40? Either by using the original app or something very close? Its a difficult decision but I really want the P40 for its camera (either that or the Mate40)

    Cheers

    Jimmy

    Self-Updating Apps

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 01:02 PM PST

I've had issues with my old phone updating apps by itself even when they are disabled and auto-updates are turned off. I do not use these apps and they take up space so the best I could do since they are built in the phone was uninstall their updates and disable them, but in the time of 24 hours the apps update back to their current version. Again, auto updates are turned off in the Play Store and the apps are also disabled, and in Google Text-to-Speech's app case, it even reinstalls itself (when I uninstall the updates for it, it also gets removed from the list of apps in my phone but, as mentioned, it reinstalls itself back the next day.) This ONLY happens with inbuilt Microsoft and Google apps. If it's any help, the phone in question is a Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 and it's from Romania since I lived there at the time I got it. I was planning to put my foreign SIM card in it to reuse it but turns out it's a locked phone and only accepts Romanian SIM cards, so I'm now only using it for games every now and then or as backup in case something happens to my new phone. It runs on Android 9 currently and I've had this issue since day one when I got the phone. It's driving me insane with how they eat up storage and the phone is running low on that as is, I just wanna know why it's doing this and if I can somehow stop it.

What does this mean? "A certificate authority is installed on this device. Your secure network traffic may be monitored or modified."

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 12:17 PM PST

When I swipe down the notification panel, I always have this.

After clicking on it, it shows this

    It reads:

A certificate authority is installed on this device. Your secure network traffic may be monitored or modified.

Is it serious, related to the network provider, and how to remove it?

Thanks for your help in advance.

    Memory full of junk?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:47 AM PST

My wife's and my phones are both 32gigs and showing they're full on memory. Mine has roughly 3 gigs of photos, 3 gigs of videos and 26 gigs of "other" files. When the phone wants me to delete things it only shows apps and photos but these aren't even a big percentage of space used. How do I tackle this? Thanks in advance!

How to prevent android 9 from creating a new screen for every app installed

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:38 AM PST

I have a K10 tablet with stock Android 9. Every time I install a new app it creates a separate desktop for each icon. I have turned off the adding of icons to the homescreen but it continues to do this. How do I prevent Android from creating a new screen for each icon.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get Google Assistant back to announcing who is texting calling me, when I have it connected to a Bluetooth device?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:23 AM PST

I recently moved from a LG V40 to a Galaxy S10+. When I first migrated over, my Google Assistant continued announcing who I was getting text messages, or any notification from in general. But shortly afterwards, it just stopped. I've tried figuring out if there is the Bixby setting interfering with it, but didn't see anything. Admittedly though I might be overlooking a simple option if Bixby indeed is the problem. Regardless of it is Bixby or not, is anyone able to give me some direction on how to have Google Assistant back to announcing who is texting/calling me when I have bluetooth connected? If Bixby has the same functionality as Google Assistant does, I'm not totally against making the change, but am a creature of habit. Hahaha.

Trying to format microSD card on my Samsung/Android phone, but having major issues. I need help please.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:21 AM PST

I have a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and I bought a 400 GB Sandisk microSD card to give me extra storage space on my phone. I put it in my phone and wanted to put all my music files onto the card. I transferred it over from my computer to the card, but I noticed all or most of the files I transferred aren't there. It seems like the issue is that the microSD card needed to be formatted. So I'm trying to do that on my phone, but now this is where I'm having the issue. The formatting process gets stuck at 20%, then my phone reboots on its own and gets stuck on the Samsung logo bootup screen. I have to hold down the power and volume buttons to get my phone and unstuck and to completely reboot, but I've tried 2 more times to format the microSD card and the same thing keeps happening. I just want to be able to use the microSD card and have no issues here. I don't have a microSD or SD card reader on my computer, so I can only format the microSD card through my phone.

Edit: On my phone it says that the SD card is corrupt and needs to be formatted, but like I said, I'm having the above issues trying to format it.

Using 3rd party fast charger on S6 Lite

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:13 AM PST

So I just got an s6 lite, rated for 15W fast charging, and a Qualcomm Q183 fast charger with a max wattage of 18W.

What I don't get is how it comes with a voltage range for its output. It says 3.6-6V/3A.

Is it safe to use the charger? Would the charger be automatically set to 5V/3A to accommodate for the tablet's 15W specs? Thanks :)

Tesla 9.1 smartphone turning off suddenly- battery?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:08 AM PST

I own Tesla 9.1 smartphone. It works OK, but battery drains out really fast.

In last month, the phone started shuting off suddenly- battery goes from 100% to 60% in 2 hours (screen on), and then shuts down, and says its ran out of battery. I turn it on again, and it says 60%. Then shuts down again.

    Any advice?

Android phone enrolled in MS 365 Endpoint/Intune no longer syncs non-Outlook calendars (aCalendar+, ActiveSync) - workarounds?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 10:23 AM PST

Because the native Outlook Calendar for Android is rubbish, I use aCalendar+ for calendar management on my Android OS 10 phone. However, recently, the syncing of my work MS 365 calendar (enrolled in Endpoint) stopped working, whilst calendars from another non-Endpoint MS 365 account continued to sync.

The change seems to have coincided with this notice from my IT Department (the one hosting the MS 365 Endpoint account):

In alignment with the direction of global leadership, Tech (IT) has been retiring legacy apps and services in favor of more standard, secure, and up-to-date solutions as part of our global strategy to enable us to strengthen our security posture to keep our data, and our clients' data protected.
ActiveSync is an application developed by Microsoft in the late 90's. Its intended use was to synchronize your email & calendaring functions. You may not be aware that the ActiveSync service is synchronizing your email and calendaring functions, because it works in the background. Microsoft will soon be discontinuing support of ActiveSync and recommends the use of their Outlook app which uses a modern authentication method.
You have received the e-mail message as system logging indicates you are still making use of the ActiveSync service. Per February 1, 2021, ActiveSync will be disabled at our company. The Microsoft Outlook app can be used to continue to access your email and calendar information from your device.
Outlook will help you to work efficiently with email, calendars, contacts, tasks, and more - together in one place. The Outlook app is our recommended app and available for all main platforms, installed by default on all our pc's, and can be installed from the provided links below.

If for some reason you need an alternative email client, please update to a version that supports a modern way of authentication.

This date my MS 365 Endpoint calendar stopped syncing is rougly in line with this notice above.

I seem to recall that in the past I had used a dedicated "Exchange Sync" or "Active Sync" app from the play store to enable aCalendar+ to sync my Exchange calendars with it, however that app seems to have disappeared from the Google Play Store.

Do you have any thoughts on restoring sync functionality of Endpoint-enrolled MS 365 accounts to non-Outlook calendars on Android phones?

    Mods not working after installing

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:52 PM PST

I'm trying to download a mod for an app on my phone. When I download the APK and install it, it gives completes and says "app installed". When I go in to the app, the mod doesn't take affect.

I've checked online and the mod works for others. The mod version matches the version of the game and it's supported by my OS version. I've tried uninstalling the game and downloading it completely new using the mod, but that didn't work either. Not sure how it works as it's my first time modding an app. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

All Android One phones have an easy to unlock bootloader?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 08:01 PM PST

Do all Android One phones have an easy to unlock bootloader?

I have searched a lot but while I can see that many phones do have Pixel-like unlockability to enable community support past the initial 2 years of support , I wasn't able to find if this is part of Google's requirements for Android One.
