Are old SIM cards of any use or value? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:36 AM PST I used to have Sprint and still have a SIM card from an old phone from before I switched. It is just sitting around and I am thinking of throwing it away but I wanted to find out first if these can be useful to anyone? What can you do with an old SIM card? Who uses these? MIUI vs EMUI; Is it worth the switch? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 01:37 AM PST I currently have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro (6/64). While I'm fine with the hardware of the phone, the software (MIUI 12) is absolutely driving me crazy. Like, for example, when you have MIUI Optimizations enabled, your icons look perfectly normal and shaped. But the terrible background process management comes in and closes all your apps no matter what you do (Disabling power saving from both MIUI settings and the hidden settings, enabling the automatic startup thing, locking the app in the background etc.). But when you disable MIUI optimizations, apps no longer (maybe rarely) close, but the home screen icons look like garbage (Some older apps have custom shaped icons, and no the "Default icon shape" option does not fix it). Also, when you enable dark mode, MIUI automatically forces app backgrounds to be black since MIUI 12, making some apps look bad. Of course you can toggle it from settings, but it's super annoying having to do it every time a new app is installed. Also, I used to have random disconnect & instantly reconnect issues with the Wi-Fi too. But I managed to fix it mostly with a Play Store app called Connection Stabilizer Booster. And even though I fixed it, my Wi-Fi is still not great. Due to all of these annoyances, I was thinking about exchanging my phone with my brother's phone. His phone is a Huawei P20 (Not P20 Pro or Lite, regular P20). It has 4 GB RAM (2 GB less compared to my Redmi), but double the storage (128 GB). Both phones have about the same SoC/CPU performance. His phone currently runs EMUI 10 I believe, but not exactly sure. Also, his phone also has a far smaller battery (3400 mAh vs 4500 mAh) Now, I barely play any games on my phone (I use social media more), and I'm completely fine with having slightly worse performance on games. What I was actually wondering is, is it worth doing the switch? Is EMUI as buggy as MIUI? Does EMUI have the annoyances I listed? As I barely used EMUI before I know little to nothing about it. So I would like to hear the opinions of EMUI users. And by the way, no, unfortunately flashing custom ROM (Pixel Experience etc.) is not an option for now. My country's Xiaomi distributor clearly states custom roms void warranty. So I can't flash for a year (my warranty expires in 2022). TL;DR: Hate the software of my Redmi Note 8 Pro, and want to switch my phone with a slightly worse phone (Huawei P20) with EMUI 10 just for a better software experience. Was wondering if it's worth it or not. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:17 PM PST The most recent notification I've received in Google Play is (I'm not kidding) "Turn on important notifications You can choose which notifications you receive, such as security updates, in Settings". In other words, I'm receiving a notification telling me I need to turn on notifications. None of this makes any sense. Does anyone know what's going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:04 PM PST Ok, due to the pandemia right now, I can't visit my mother like I would normally, she finally just got her first android phone, she's 67 yrs old and has multiple health issues, she has an ipad that I can't remote control or anything from my house (damn security of Apple are idiots), but I'm nearly 100% sure we can control an android phone or tablet from my PC so I can install apps, add icons to her main screen and such, the main issue is most apps I've seen requires the android phone to be on the same wifi network for this to work, so I'm looking for a solution to control her new android phone (Galaxy A50) from my PC or from my android phone over the Internet, I'm used to apps to help people on PC (I'm a helpdesk tech), so I use remote control software like anydesk and Teamviewer often, but it doesn't seem they allow control of android phones from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:03 PM PST I dont know what could be the cause of this. I had the phone for about 8 months now. I even took the screen protector off just in case it was phantom triggering the notification bar. But that didn't fix anything. Moments ago while I was typing on reddit, I noticed my key presses were being interrupted almost every 3rd or 4th letter press, when I noticed the notification bar going haywire as if it was being touched. Then suddenly while I was typing, the whole notification bar came all the way down as if I did a full swipe down from the top of the screen. I almost accidentally clicked a app notification because of its sudden randomness. Right now as I am typing this. Its not doing it right now. But this happens way too often , especially for a newer phone. Anybody have any idea whats going on? Edit: I want to add some additional information that may be a clue. Sometimes the phone screen will stop being intractable at all, or only allow the notification bar to drag up or down. So imagine you on the browser and suddenly all key presses stop. Can't press the android buttons (home, menu, back) because nothing works, but the notification bar can still be dragged down like normal. Its weird. Doesn't happen all the time, but still happens about a few times a week. Also want to note: my phone doesn't have screen cracks or anything like that. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 11:42 AM PST I have a Xiamoi note 8 phone running android 9. It has 32gb internal storage and I used most of it, so I decided to buy an sd card to use as internal storage. when I open the file manager it shows the phone's data split evenly between the sd card and the storage. when I open the settings and go to storage it only shows the phone's original 32gb. Getting video output from an LG G6 Posted: 02 Mar 2021 11:26 AM PST I've recently played around with the idea of using my old LG G6 as a media centre for my TV, but upon researching I found that it does not natively support HDMI output. I have no other use for it however, so I'd like to see what I can do with it. Does anyone know if it's possible to get video output any other way, say by opening it and connecting something there? Ruining the phone by attempting something difficult isn't a concern either. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to make the lock screen the way it was? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:35 AM PST after I updated my phone the lock screen changed from this to this is there any way to change it back? [link] [comments] |
Google maps not tracking properly Posted: 02 Mar 2021 11:19 AM PST I have a Samsung Android phone, but I think my problem is with Google Maps location tracking. When I try to use Google Maps to navigate, there are frequent problems with positioning that make the app unusable. I can't recalibrate the location constantly by making figure eights. Sometimes recalibration doesn't even help much. There are times when tracking works fine and times when it goes haywire: The little arrow representing my position will point the wrong way, as if I was walking backwards. My location won't update as I move, or it will update wrong. Sometimes the little arrow will keep moving when I'm still, or even better, spin around. These problems also affect Google Fit, which can't keep track of the distance I have traveled, it just knows the time I have spent traveling and it is able to categorize it correctly is riding a bicycle. Another map app that I used today seems to work fine. It updated my location quite precisely and I was able to find my way. [link] [comments] |
Arbitrary limitation of password length: Intentionally flawed? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:31 AM PST As you may know there is a very unusual and odd limitation on the maximum password length (not the minimum length!) on android. Furthermore the password characters are limited to common ‚special characters'. Exotic characters are excluded, drastically limiting keyspace. This isn't normal. Cryptographically there is no requirement to do so. If you can hash a 17 character password you could also hash a 34 character password or 170 characters. Hash size is still tiny. On the other side a 17 character password would be still in range for a powerful (state actor) brute-force attack while 34 characters would be off limits for sure. Anyone knows any context on why the password length was kneecapped? Keep in mind the NSA successfully infiltrated other cryptographic standards in the past, critically weakening them to make them breakable. (eg very weak SSL browser implementation; browser would oddly still accept very weak keys ) Any thoughts? Anyone knows exactly which hash algorithm is employed by android ? [link] [comments] |
Can I flash the desktop linux kernel on my phone? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:49 AM PST I saw many people with custom recoveries install custom kernels that were made for their device. My question is whether I can install the stock linux kernel from kernel.org onto my phone with my recovery? My phone is the Xiaomi POCO F1 and I'm using TWRP Recovery. [link] [comments] |

Android Error: "Music FX has stopped working" Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:28 AM PST Hi guys, I recently did a factory data reset on my Android 10, as my best solution for clearing ROM space. Before, I had installed a 3rd party Equaliser app (PowerAmp Equaliser) (PE) and it was working fine with my Apple Music (AM) Android App. After my factory reset and after reinstalling both AM and PE, both equalisers are not working! This includes the native equaliser on AM, meaning that I'm left with no equaliser and a pretty flat listening experience! I have tried completely uninstalling the PE and on attempting to access the native/ original AM equaliser on multiple tries, the Android error I get is that "Music Fx has stopped working." I've noted that Music Fx is an Android system app that comes default on Android and seems to control the equaliser settings, whether it's the native equaliser or a 3rd party app like PE. I've also tried to disable/ re-enable Fx, to no avail. I've also tried numerous suggestions from Apple Support eg Force stop the app, clearing cache, logging out, restarting phone etc. No success. How do I sort out this issue? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Can I change my default microphone? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:19 AM PST Recently I've realised that the microphone built into my phone is faulty and people find it difficult to hear me. I was wondering if it would be possible to have my gear S3's microphone as my default microphone. I do have root and magisk if that helps. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Need help with finding a hacker app Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:32 AM PST So i just had a fight with my family about the wifi plan and went through my phone and saw that something called removed apps and users used up 65 GB of data this month and did the same thing a month ago. I didn't download 65Gb and then delete the apps and i read somewhere there are some apps that do this kind of background usage. How can i identify and solve the problem? [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to permanently sync photos to another account? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:07 AM PST I thought I fixed this. I didn't. I put all my Google photos on a different account, but then the photos weren't on my gallery. So I took a screenshot of every photo in my library and they were back on my gallery. When I delete a photo off the original account, it doesn't effect the files on my other Google account, but it deletes them off of my gallery. Also, whenever I take a screenshot, it saves to both accounts. I don't want that. Is there a way I can sync my gallery and my new google account and stop the old account from saving all the screenshots I take? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 08:43 AM PST I'm torn between the two devices On one hand, the note catches my eye since I'm currently using a Note 10+ and I love it! On the other hand, the S21 Ultra is a newer device and is probably going to bring me better value and longevity as an up to date device They both cost roughly the same. I'm trying to sell my Note 10+ so I can upgrade, and I feel like the longer I keep this device the more it will decline in value so the sooner I sell it the better! (Trade is value is a scam so I don't feel like throwing a couple hundred in in trash trading it in) Anyone have thoughts on this, I need help deciding! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Mar 2021 03:56 AM PST Yesterday my phone was acting up, AKA being laggy yesterday. So I decided to restart my device by holding down the power button and tapping on restart. Afterwards it shut off, and it turned back on to its logo screen. Its now been 8 hours since then and its still on that screen. Any help? [link] [comments] |
