Our five year journey to Android 9 | Behind the bytes | Fairphone

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 09:19 PM PDT

This is a video from Fairphone, which sells sustainable and repairable phones.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcLmQp7ZdGU

In the video, they describe how Qualcomm is actually a barrier for long term support and how they have had to use Lineage OS to try to work around the lack Of Qualcomm support for older phones. Long story short, after Google releases the Android Open Source version of the new Android release, the SOC vendor (Qualcomm being the largest Android SOC vendor) must then take that and add drivers along with other hardware support.

Qualcomm doesn't support older SOCs. This has resulted in Fairphone using Lineage OS. This is acceptable for aftermarket tech enthusiasts, but not for a proper full release.

Apparently the Fairphone 3 and 3+ will have issues soon because the SOC, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 will not be supported past July 2021 by Qualcomm.

They also are critical of Google for the complexity of making Android compatible due to the increasing test requirements.

Fairphone ends their video by saying that although the work is challenging, they are trying to set an example.

Do you prefer 3 button or gesture navigation in your Android phones?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:39 PM PDT

Ideally, I would have loved to do a poll but since it's not allowed, putting up a post here. Needless to say that navigation is a core part of our phone experience. Till couple of years back, everyone was using 3 button navigation that worked well. But since I started using gesture navigations (swipe up for home, swipe right for back), I hate using 3 button navigation.

Recently, I got my Dad a new phone and while setting it up, asked him to try Gesture navigation which he absolutely refused to. He's very happy with the old 3 button system. I am sure, he is not alone.

Just curious to understand what navigation system you prefer using and why? As for me, I find gesture navigation to be much faster and modern. Plus I love having some extra screen real estate not being occupied by buttons. What are your reasons for liking (or hating) gesture navigations?

    Nostalgia...

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:18 PM PDT

I'm interested in hearing everyone's favorite android that they ever owned.

The first android I purchased for myself was a Nexus 6P and, to this day, it is my favorite device that I've ever owned. I've had LG's, Samsung, Apple, OnePlus, Pixel's..... nothing compares to the cold metal of the 6P and the stock UI.

What's the android phone you're most nostalgic for?
