S20 FE: wifi is slow when using randomised MAC. Normal when using device MAC.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 11:11 PM PST

I just bought my S20 FE. I noticed the WiFi speed was much slower compared to all my other devices. Did a few speed tests and it was consistently about 20% of the speed it should have been, never going above that.

I played around with the settings a bit until I changed the MAC address type to using device MAC, that made the speed how it should be.

Every time I switch back to randomised MAC the speed is always around 20%.

What's causing this? I have other android devices and this hasn't happened before.

EDIT: The private DNS setting under "more connection settings" was off. I added one to match my other android phone and that seems to have fixed the speed issue. The WiFi is fast even using a randomised MAC address. Now even if I remove the DNS the speed is totally fine. Not sure what was causing this!

What's the best way to transfer data between phones when getting a new device?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 07:13 PM PST

My previous 3 phones have been from Samsung so it has been pretty straight forward to just let Samsung's own app transfer everything after connecting the old and new phones via USB cable.

What would be the best way of doing the same thing if moving to a different manufacturer's Android device? Are there any apps that transfer all your settings, data and app and set it up the same way on the new phone or is it a more tedious/manual exercise if you're going from one manufacturer to another?

    Encrypted partition on SDcard?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 08:09 AM PST

I would like to have an encrypted LUKS partition on my SDcard that requires an encryption key every time this partition is mounted. Does Android support this since its kernel is based on linux? Does one need to root their phone to be able to do this?

Any custom ROMs for Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10.1?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 07:58 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

my parents are still using this tablet with the ancient Android 5. The tablet is still working great apart from the fact that a number of apps no longer work on it. That brings me to the question: Are there any custom ROMs available for this model? I've been googling my ass off but to no avail. All the download links that I've found for LineageOS 14.1 and other versions seem to be dead now :(

    Thanks in advance!

Why does my phone keep using in-call volumes when I'm not in a call?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 07:42 AM PST

This has been a recurring issue for me for a couple years that I've never been able to find an answer to. Sometimes when I finish a phone call, my phone continues to use the volume settings for while I'm still in the call. My media is much quieter, I still have an in-call volume slider, my notifications do the short in-call pings instead of playing my usual notification sounds, etc. The only way I've found to get it to go back to normal is to restart my phone.

Currently I'm using an unlocked galaxy s20 ultra with Verizon, but I've also had this issue with an unlocked google pixel (the first one) on Verizon and that same pixel on sprint before that. I have tried force quitting my calling apps but the problem persists. I had factory restored my pixel several times due to other issues but this was a problem that never went away while I was still using it.

Does anyone know what causes this? How can I prevent it? Is there a faster way to fix it than restarting my phone? Thanks!

Help with type of charging to use

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 06:45 AM PST

Hi, i currently use a Google Pixel 4A, and left the charger (cable+power brick) at a friend's place. I have a spare power brick (from Samsung Galaxy A8) that I want to use for the moment, however I'm worried that it might damage my current phone's battery. The spare power brick output is "9.0V/1.67A or 5.0V/2.0A". The pixel 4a charger output is 9.0V/2.0A. Is the spare power brick safe to use? Or is it safer to, for example, plug the phone into a laptop? Thank you!

Hidden apps non Android 11 not that well hidden

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 05:59 PM PST

I have a Samsung galaxy s20 and an Android 11 came out. On the old version hidden apps did not show up when you hit the ||| button, but now they're there. What's the point of hiding Reddit and ebooks if they show up on |||. Picture bc Idk what ||| is actually called. https://www.reddit.com/user/CrashtestO8/comments/kka5kn/_/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

I need a suggestion for a good call recorder that will turn on automatically and without making any noise. Thanks in advance.

Home swipe options in Android 9

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 02:40 AM PST

I love how home swipe bar is in Android 10. I love its ease and functionality but I don't have android 10, I use android 9 on a Samsung Note 8, completely stock. I have a question related to Launcher settings and home buttons.

Can Samsung's one UI change home buttons to android 10 like a bar and made it work just like that?

If yes then why do companies don't do that for us peasants

Need data recovered from Samsung tablet (details in the post)

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:11 AM PST

(English is not my native language, sorry in advance. Also, typing this on mobile)

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite (SM-T111), Android version 4.2.- (don't remember, but it's Jelly Bean). One thing for sure, though, is that it has stock firmware - I wanted to try reinstalling firmware w/ Odin, but ultimately I did nothing.

Hello! Quite a problem w/ my device. Died a long time ago (think it was in 2015), it was updating while connected to the charger when something happened (I believe it was... what was it called, a power surge?) Well, I think it interrupted the update.

Back in 2015 I tried to turn the thing on, it'd been getting stuck on the second boot up screen (pulsating Samsung logo, just kept pulsating) until I did something in the debug mode (sadly, I do not remember now), after which some other issue appeared (again, I do not remember)

Now I found the poor thing, charged it a bit. Currently, I can only access debugging mode (Power+Volume Up+Home) and some kind of custom OS installation warning screen (Power+Volume Down+Home). If I try to boot up normally, it gets stuck on the first screen (where it says the name of the device) just as the boot up jingle starts playing - the sound cuts off and the screen freezes.

Connecting the tablet to the computer only charges it, it doesn't show up in the connected devices list.

I do not need the tablet itself, I just need what's on the hard drive, even if it means some brute force.

Maybe it's possible to get that hard drive and connect it to a computer. I don't really understand file systems, but I know Android has this very Linux-ey file system, so even if it's possible to take the hard drive out, will I be able to connect it to a Windows computer? I don't think anyone in my town uses Linux.

If not, perhaps I can recover the device itself without a factory reset? As I said before, I don't really need the tablet, just what's on it.

Feel free to ask me for details, any kind of help is appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Help with Music on Motorola Edge

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:05 AM PST

So I got the Motorola Edge for Christmas this year and I just copied all of my music (mp3) to the device's "Music" folder. Unfortunately, Motorola doesn't seem to have a default app to listen to music with, all it has is YT Music. How can I listen to my music on my phone?

Forever having silent notifications from the Android System and not sure how to get rid of them.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 07:45 PM PST

    Hi all,

I almost ALWAYS have the following 2 notifications at all times lately: - Choose Input Method: Multilingual Typing - Gboard - Wi-Fi Networks Available: Tap to View Available Networks

So the thing is, the first one only comes up when I have my keyboard open somewhere. But like... Why does it need to be there? And nothing happens when I type it/it doesn't let me remove it. The second one is strange because its been coming up even tho I'm already connected to my homes wifi. This one I can swipe away, but it returns within a few minutes.

    Thank you !

For example, X/A is considered to be circle/B and Square is considered X/A and i think something other than the joystick is mapped to it but im not positive. Anyways, can someone answer how I can fix it?

Google Pixel 2 XL crashing when Airplane Mode is turned off?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 10:10 PM PST

My Google Pixel 2 XL phone was working fine ever since I got it. In the last month or so, I had not installed any new apps or really done anything out of the ordinary with my phone, and was even in my pocket when the issue started occurring. My phone kept crashing every single time I tried to boot it up. I later discovered that the only way to make my phone work was to keep airplane mode on. Whenever it is turned off, it instantly crashes again. Even in safe mode, if Airplane Mode gets turned off, so does the phone. Wi-Fi will turn on fine, however. I tried removing my SIM card to see if that was the issue, but the issue still occurred. I have cleared storage space, cleared caches, removed apps, force stopped all my apps to see if anything happened, tried changing network settings, tried looking for system updates and app updates, tried disabling features such as location, Bluetooth, NFC, wifi, etc. and yet the issue still prevails. Is a factory reset my only option? I'd rather not have to go through with the process.

Doing file recovery and trying to locate the Download directory. That's all I need help with, but it's a lot more difficult than it should be.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 09:53 PM PST

Without getting into a long sob story, I used the "Free Up Space" option and it deleted some files from my Download directory that I didn't want to delete. So I'm following this tutorial to recover them.

Note that I have several directories in my Download directory which were not removed. i.e.: I had /Download/foo/bar.txt and bar.txt was deleted but ./foo is still there. So in principle even if bar.txt was unrecoverable, I should still be able to locate ./foo.

I have internal memory, mmcblk0, and an SD card, mmcblk1, and have copied both of those over to my laptop to work on them. TestDisk can indeed read them and identify the file structure, and I can find a Download directory, /media/0/Download, but neither /foo nor bar.txt are in it.

Now I had thought that Downloads were stored on the SD card, but mmcblk1 contains almost nothing. A single partition, with /LOST.DIR and /Android/data/ and a few com.~app directories in that. Nothing else.

If I look at my tablet using Amaze or adb shell I can still see /storage/emulated/0/Download/foo, it just isn't showing up in the images that I copied over. So my question is: where can I find the Download directory?

Google Play Store Saying not Enough Storage to Install App Even though there is?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 09:40 PM PST

I am having a problem with Google play Store. As of today anytime I try to install an app it says I need to free up some room, but I have 9GB of room left in Internal storage so what is going on? It will not let me install any apps. This is on my crappy backup phone running Android Pie.

Is there by any chance that when we download any image, video and audio from the internet, that we can set it to go directly into the microSD inside and not to the internal storage? And if so, how?

    Physical keyboard enter/return key behavior

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST

I'm using a physical keyboard with my android tv box. When I press the enter key it inputs whatever key is highlighted on the virtual keyboard. If I close the virtual keyboard it doesn't do anything at all. I want it to act like a send/ok/go type of key. For example if I type in an address in the nav bar of a browser and hit the enter key I want it to actually go to that address but instead it inputs a letter on the keyboard. Is there a way to do that? English isn't my first language so apologies. I appreciate your help.
