Why androidx/android.support APIs are a huge mess?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 03:26 AM PST

Firstly, I create a project. By default Theme.MaterialComponents is used by themes. I choose some colours I like for the app themes (day & night) and then I try it on my device (Galaxy S9): day theme has correct colours, night theme does not have the colours I have chosen, it is grey/black instead. But it's ok, let's use Theme.AppCompat then.

After this, I start to work on the code of my app (the idea was a simple music player app) and documentate on the media APIs like MediaBrowserService and MediaSessionCompat only to find after some time that those APIs will make you create a Service, in which music is going to be played, that will die when you close the application from multitasking, and that's not what I wanted. I wanted a service that remains alive until playback ends, with a notification on the status bar. Seems there is no way to get those APIs to do that, I am not sure though, but I am sure I can do it if I get rid of the APIs.

And also, when trying to understand how APIs work and how to do things etc., 90% of times you will find answers on sites that are not developer.android.com.

That's what Android developing is to me at the moment. Maybe it is my fault, maybe I misunderstood everything, I don't know, I only know that often programming elsewhere is easier.

Ditch all ads, offer only in-app subscriptions

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 04:06 AM PST

Do you think that is possible to live only by offering in-app subscriptions/purchases?

Do you think that there is enough people out there that will value this kind of move? To offer 100% ad-free apps to everyone; and try to sustain the development (and make a living) by only offering purchases and subscriptions.

Right now I make the majority of my income via ads...but I don't feel good about it, I totally respect ads but this kind of business is related to privacy concerns, I would like to live as a developer in a more clean and respectful way.

Do you think that this is achievable?

What is hands down the best stack/set of libraries for fast android development?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 08:35 AM PST

I'm coming back to android dev after a year, want to get back up to speed quickly.

Would love to hear your thoughts on specific stack/design pattern/architecture choices that you like - specifically those that allow you to build apps faster.

Anything from UI libraries to architectures - what all do you use to speed up app development?

Android Studio - Emulator will not stop

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 08:03 AM PST

TLDR: Why won't the emulator stop when I close the emulator window, - or - click AVD manager, click my emulator's dropdown menu, and click 'Stop' (not greyed out) ? I have an empty project as of now.

Ive searched reddit, duckduckgo, google, and stack overflow.

I'm new to Android development. I have finally got my emulator to start. I also know logcat throws all kinds of messages at us that I shouldnt concern myself over. However, when I click Stop (my emulator), I keep getting logcat messages like crazy. One line even said something like google.gms 'how are you' and it freaks me out like I'm hitting googles servers over and over for some reason.

    ANY ideas are welcome.

How does Google Play Account Termination affect your other Google Services (like YouTube, Adsense, etc)?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 06:05 PM PST

I received a Google Play Account termination a few years ago when I was in college. I haven't made any new accounts or anything since then and stopped developing mobile apps. I have a question about this line in the email from the termination..

Google Play Publisher terminations are associated with developers, and may span multiple account registrations and related Google services.

What exactly does this mean with "related Google services"? I'm asking because I am working on building a YouTube channel and eventually i want to be able to join the Youtube Partner Program and I'm afraid that my Google Play account termination might somehow prevent me from joining. I never had ads on my mobile apps or anything, if that matters.

    Thanks

Can I get current device orientation in space?

I think the answer is no? As Gyro only registers change in angles and not actual angle. Pls prove me wrong or right!

Google play console won't let me upload my app with an updated key

Sorry for my english, A few weeks ago I lost the key to my application that I have in internal tests, I generated a ticket to google support and they helped me to change my key, I waited 2 days to see the change reflected, but when I try to upload my application, it shows me a message that my key does not match, they will have some idea what happens

Recently sold my computer and I'm thinking about developing on the last macbook air. Opinions and advices are welcome.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2020 04:30 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

Recently, as a life choice, I decided to sell my PC to avoid spending too much time on playing video games. However, I'd like to keep working on photoshop for UI / UX design and android /iOS development as those are my other passions.

In order to avoid going back to video games for the coming months, until I get used to finding new hobbies, I figured that a macbook would be great, as it's less easy to play on this OS and it's a completely new tool for me. I've always had thar visions that mac is for working and productivity.

While searching for a good one within my budget range, I found that the macbook air 2020 seems to be a great choice (portability, great performances and less than 1500€).

Do you think it is a good idea to invest in that macbook air, for android development and photoshop, or would you suggest another computer?

Thank you for your help !
