Android Questions: Are Chinese phones secure?

Android Questions: Are Chinese phones secure?

    Are Chinese phones secure?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:42 AM PST

I was thinking about purchasing the Cubot x19 which is a phone from a Chinese company. The specs are great for the price but I've been wondering if that's a catch after reading this article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2020/04/30/exclusive-warning-over-chinese-mobile-giant-xiaomi-recording-millions-of-peoples-private-web-and-phone-use/ and learning of other examples of pre-installed spyware in other Chinese phones. How do you all feel about these privacy concerns? Is purchasing a Chinese phone a risk that trades functionality for personal security? Imo the Chinese government cannot be trusted and I'm not sure how much that should affect the faith I have in using a phone from a company that is based there.

Info: I'm in the United states

Edit: I was using the phone for about a month before I stumbled across this article. I'm going to just replace it. Do you guys have any recommendations for how I can secure my data? Should I just change my passwords?

Phone keeps restarting when connected to a particular WiFi

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 06:23 AM PST

I use a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro running Corvus OS 10.0. Whenever I connect to a particular WiFi, my phone restarts in a few moments (if not instantly). I checked by connecting to other WiFi networks and my phone works fine. I only have this issue with this particular WiFi. I tried reinstalling the Custom ROM but that didn't fix anything.

    How do I fix this?

PS: I installed Magisk and NikGapps modules along with Corvus OS

What are the downsides of custom ROMs such as Pixel Experience or LineageOS?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:42 AM PST

I'm always seeing phones from Chinese brands like Realme/Oppo/Xiaomi offering great hardware for incredibly low prices, but sometimes with questionable software (looking at you Poco X3). If I have concerns about bloatware/advertisements/privacy, doesn't installing a custom ROM on one of these phones basically solve that problem, or is there a major downside I'm missing?

I know this option isn't available for every phone, but I'm curious as to what the other downsides are. When is using a custom ROM really worthwhile?

Is it possible to turn an android phone OFF without using the power button?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 10:07 PM PST

Long story short the power button on my Nokia stopped working nearly entirely (it works once in a few dozen tries, but I doubt I could manage a long press to bring up power menu). I'm waiting for a new phone to arrive in a day or two, but in the meantime Irrealized I'll need to power down the Nokiatto ttake out the SIM and SD cards. Annoyingly this model doesn't have a scheduled power on/off feature, and it's not rooted either so that cuts out majority of options I managed to find via Google search. Anyone know if there is something else I can do, or will I simply have to wait for the battery to run dry?

    I require assistance

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 11:56 AM PST

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I need help finding a stock rom for a wileyfox storm. It needs to be the CM12.1 android 5.1. The phone came to me in a bootloop and recovery mode also boot looped. I tried flashing cm13 however since the bootloader is locked it will not work. I tried looking for a cm12.1 but I can't find one, if anyone can point me in the right direction or suggest a different idea that would be helpful.

Downloaded Spotify Music Files Won't Uninstall

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 07:12 AM PST

Last night I was managing my storage on my Moto G7 Power and saw that I could transfer Spotify over to my SD card. It previously wouldn't let me, and the reason why I got the SD card in the first place was to download more music. I transferred Spotify over, but noticed that the internal storage still had 30 Gb leftover from Spotify. Additionally, if I transferred Spotify back over to the internal storage, all of the downloaded music was still there in the app. So then I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it to the SD card. The internal storage stayed the same after I uninstalled it, and when I transfer Spotify back over to the internal storage it doesn't show any downloaded songs.

So now I have 30 gigs of mystery files and have no idea how to get rid of them. Here's what the storage screen shows. Notice that the numbers below it don't add up to 54gb. I've looked through my files and couldn't find where the downloaded music was at. Any ideas on how to get rid of them? Would I have to root my phone to get to them?

    App to ping network resources?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 10:58 AM PST

Is there an app that will allow me to ping network resources?

I often need to connect to internal networks to make sure that resources are communicating properly. I'd like an app that I can use to ping an internal server so I don't have to lug around my laptop and deal with the tiny battery that was spec'd for it. Seriously. Who orders a brand new laptop with 2 hour battery life?

My volume randomly goes up too and videos keep pausing. I tried to post the video but the sub doesn't allow it.

Help with VLC file transfer: Android - iPhone / Mac

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 10:36 AM PST

Hi there, I have a One Plus 7pro and recently switched to iPhone. I'm in the process of transferring files and I have some pretty important video files on VLC that I don't know how they got there. What is the easiest and fastest way to transfer those VLC files to my Mac Book or iPhone?

I was trying to use the share via wifi option between phones on VLC directly and it isn't working for some reason. It can click on the download arrow, but nothing downloads. And I tried various file sizes so it's not that.

I tried downloading it using wifi on my Mac by using the IP address, and when I click download it says "No webpage was found for the web address"

Is there an "Air Drop" type of feature that works with VLC between Android and iPhone?

Being put on a conference prevents me from merging calls?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:33 AM PST

For work I often have to call people and then add my boss to the call - I usually do this by hitting the "add call" button then dialing my boss' cell and hitting merge to connect the 3 people (my boss, the person calling, and me). A few times however, when someone I am calling tries to add another person on their end, my phone tells me "you are in a conference with 123-456-7890" (insert their actual number) and I no longer can merge my boss to the call. Any solution for this I could implement, or even an explanation as to why it happens? It's happened with only 2 people out of over 100 calls.

Can't get rid of "tips" in the settings menu

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 05:44 AM PST

I got a new phone and can't get rid of these setup "tips" in the settings menu.

They always sit above the normal settings subcategories, if you click into them or even set them up, they will persistently stay in the same position.

Can't find anything in device settings. I've tried to look here and online but didn't find anything (also because of the associated keywords it's difficult to search anyway).

Contacted the phone manufacturer in case it was some additional tool they implemented but was told that it is an Android 10 feature.

    Can anyone help? Thanks

Am I able to upgrade my phone's OS from 7 to 8/9/10 ? Huawei

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 07:59 AM PST

I'm on android 7.0 nougat I believe and it has been that way since I've had this phone (Huawei Y7 Prime 2017, TRT-L21A)

Am I eligible for an upgrade to at least android 8.0 or 9.0 ??

I've been wanting to do this so as to adjust my Bluetooth codec (SBC default) to accommodate my new purchase of galaxy buds plus.

I just don't want any chance of my phone getting bricked somehow (I'm from a 3rd world country and things are just too tight on my budget rn to get a new phone) and hope to hear any testimonials from anyone else with the same model or similar situation (upgrading from android 7.0 to 8/9/10 on a huawei phone)

Anything more reliable than Google Assistant's reminders?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 03:28 AM PST

I absolutely love the idea of being able to tell my phone to remind me in 25 days to cancel a trial before a they charge me, but ... you know where I'm going. I didn't get a notification for some reason, while the "show reminders" command gives me a red bold "overdue" label on my reminder.

So I need something more reliable for such one off reminders. I need something that will keep nudging me until I acknowledge it, even if I lose the convenience of being able to just say to my phone what the reminder should be. Any suggestion for such an app?

PS: I've noticed one extremely easy way to miss a reminder is if you restart your phone. 1. reminder pops up in-between other notifications. 2. Have to reboot phone. 3. Reminder never shows up again. I think the approach should not be "nah, here's a crumbly notification for you. My job is done". It should make sure I've seen it.

Android keyboard, how to float again

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:34 PM PST

I have an app that only allows landscape orientation. I had a floating keyboard but I pulled too low and now it is glued to the lower half. How do I make it floating again? I searched and it said I had to click the "G" icon but there is no "G" icon. For some reason the landscape keyboard is different to the portrait/landscape keyboard when using chrome browser. There are no suggested words, no settings, nothing.

This may be my ignorance but I'm honestly quite pissed that it's like this and I'm having a hard time reverting it. Something like this should be instinctive to the UI or at least have a settings icon. I mean there is a row that only the voice type icon occupies. Such an empty space could've been used better.
