Android apps are designed differently for smartphones and tablets or a single app is optimized to work on both?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 07:07 AM PST

Hi, I would like know that are apps designed differently on android for smartphones and tablet or it's just same OS optimized for various devices. Their is an app for a online course which works only on android phone. My problem is smartphone screen is not so good for elearning because of it's screen size. I am going to purchase a samsung tablet just for elearning but i am not sure will that app work on tablet. It would be waste of money as i don't really need a tablet other then for elearning. How does android works. Is it same like iOS and ipados or just a same OS which works fine on both android smartphone and tablet.

Any way to run Android 5.0+ apps on Android 4.0 and up?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:18 AM PST

Ok so I have a pretty old phone, it runs good enough for my needs and besides I don't even use my phone that much. (Mostly at night when i'm not asleep and have nothing to do, I mainly use my laptop.) But it still would be nice to run Snapchat (Bcs i'm getting out of date wit tha peeps) and Reddit (bcs i enjoy browsing reddit at night.) On a device that runs android 4.0+ (I don't remember specifically, and cannot specify the version since my phone is waiting for a replacement battery. It was something among the lines of Android 4.3.3)
Thank you in advance, it would be nice even if it's a simple "You can't run them on 4.0" or a "Yea, there must be a way!"
I welcome ROM patching and modding android.

    No VPN works.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:51 AM PST

I can't get any VPN to work, no matter what I try. Changing DNS screws up the entire internet connection, including my ability to connect to a server at all, and if I don't change it, then connecting to a VPN server works, but it kills my internet. At a complete loss here. Any help would be great.

Phone is an LG Velvet with Fido as carrier.

Get all pushbullet/app notifications suddenly. Can't download from Google Play store, but in app wifi/lte is fine...WHY?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:25 AM PST

    So as topic title suggests...

This issue is both on Wifi as well as Data.

I think somehow that background syncing and checking for app notifications and server networks syncs and updates etc is being affected somehow. That said scrolling Instagram or Youtube etc works just fine... So connectivity within these apps is not being affected clearly.

This major issue has started off from PushBullet.

I have been consistently using it for yeas, but for the past week or two it has not been pushing items consistently and smoothly.

I know it's not just a Pushbullet related issue because I'm having similar issues with things like downloading from the Google Play store too. It gets stuck forever on waiting for download and never pulls through.

I can't nail exactly what issue might be going on in the background. I checked battery optimization and I don't have a battery optimizing app on my phone.

    Anyone have any clue??

EDIT : Also worthy of mentioning, phone doesn't sync evernote nor the date and time widget I have on the front screen either, but when everything works, it all works together!

How to clear lock screen notifications on login

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:17 AM PST

    Hello,

I've been using an Android phone for a while now (Galaxy S10). I come from an iPhone background where the behavior for notifications is different. On the iPhone notifications show up on the lock screen, but when you log in, those notifications will no longer show up on the lock screen later, almost like clearing them. I much prefer this approach as I don't want to have to go through the extra step of clearing my notifications manually. Is there anyway to replicate this behavior on Android? Thanks!

Will flashable font zips made for older Android versions work with newer versions?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:05 AM PST

So I downloaded this flashable font zip for Google's Product Sans font from this XDA thread, so that I can get this font on my phone without rooting it.

I have TWRP 3.4.0-0 installed on my phone and I am running LineageOS 17.1 (Android 10) (not rooted) on a Xiaomi Redmi 7. Flashing a zip was the only way for me to install a custom font without rooting.

Now, the problem is, according to the thread's author, all the flashable zips on that thread work with Android 5 through Android 8.1, but I have Android 10 installed on my phone. So, will the zip work for me? If no, is there a no-root workaround? If the zip will work, will I have to reflash the zip after every software update? Thanks!

Is there a program I could use to transfer photos/files from my Pixel 2 without turning File Transfer on?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 04:44 AM PST

My Pixel 2 screen bugged out last night and was only showing slivers of readable screen while half or more was black. All parts of the screen were useable even while black. I put my phone in rice while still powered (I couldnt figure out how to turn it off it just kept restarting)and now the screen is completely black (still feels responsive). I would like to make sure I have every photo downloaded, is there a 3rd party program I could use since I cant figure out how to turn "file transfer" on?

    Thanks!

Really terrible audio on Moto G8 power

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:24 AM PST

The headphone output has a lot of noise and it has a really horrible and poor quality noise filter that I have no idea how to turn off. I tried using an external DAC/AMP but for some reason the output of that was even more noisy whereas on my previous phone it was much better. Is there anything I can do to make sure android isn't messing with my audio? I've looked all over but I have no idea why it is that android is messing with the audio and it can't be the hardware cause using better hardware made it worse. Can someone please help. Thanks

Android Messages - how to exempt one person from Do Not Disturb?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:13 AM PST

I want to exclude one person from being blocked in Do Not Disturb. I realize I can exclude all starred contacts from DND, but I don't want to do that. I want to keep a few people starred for easily calling them, but just want one person's texts to not get blocked in notifications when DND is on.

I can go into their individual notification settings and click Override Do Not Disturb. But that doesn't actually seem to work. I still don't get notifications when that person texts me with DND on.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am wanting to upgrade from my current Samsung Galaxy S8 to a newer phone, but I am getting confused when it comes to the phone's processor. Need assistance please.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 08:26 AM PST

My current phone - Samsung Galaxy S8 - was released in 2017 and has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (4x2.3 GHz). I am trying to find a newer phone that is not as expensive as a Samsung and I would prefer an Android One phone that is not bogged down with a bunch of crap-ware. I found a Nokia 7.2 Android One phone, but the processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 (4x2.2 GHz), which "appears" to be a lesser processor. The phone was released two years later, but the processor looks to be a lot less powerful. Am I reading this correctly? Do I need to stick with a Samsung Galaxy S10 in order to get a better phone? Even the latest Nokia 8.3 (which was released less than a year ago) has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G (1x2.4 GHz & 1x2.2 GHz & 6x1.8 GHz - whatever that means), which is still lower than an 835 processor. I admit that my understanding of Android hardware is very limited, so I was hoping you all could help.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 08:01 AM PST

I'm still deciding between the Realme X50 Pro or Mi 10T Pro, I currently own a Poco F1 and not sure which to choose... The price difference between the 12+256 (X50 Pro) and the 8+256 (10T Pro) is just less than $100. I'm looking for the +s and -s of these two phones, thanks

Luddite switching from iPhone to Android - help!

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:12 PM PST

I'm sure this question shows up here all the time, but I'm still having trouble finding the specific info I'm looking for. I'm in the process of making the switch and I'm looking to transfer over all my SMS AND iMessages from my iPhone. I'm tech-averse and have never really figured out backups or syncs or anything, so pretty much everything except messages is manually backed up to Drive, Google Photos, etc. and I'm not worried about it.

I managed to back up my messages to my computer for the first time, so now, supposedly, I have my SMS and iMessages in whatever weird output the iPhone gives you. I'm now wondering how to populate them in my new Android messages app. Ideally, I'd like to be able to see the full history of all my conversations, whether they were iMessage or SMS, and just continue where I left off.

Most of what I find on the internet only talks about moving SMS, not iMessage as well. And everything seems to require a third-party app, and I'm not sure which are real and trustworthy. Finally, I don't use iCloud, so I'm looking to do this by connecting my Android to my laptop (which is a Mac).

Can anybody ELI5 this, or point me in the right direction? Thanks!!

Edit: So it sounds like it's not possible to transfer my iMessages. How can I transfer my SMS?

Wireless Sync Folder from Windows PC to Android Phone?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 07:48 AM PST

I like to keep my music stored on my sd card and use a 3rd party app to play it. I was using Plex sync, but just got a new phone and the media app (Poweramp) isn't able to reconcile the new Plex sync with the old file data so it's not going to work as expected.

I'd like to just wirelessly sync my pc music folder to my phone without the use of a pc media player (like itunes) and store the files that way. I feel like it will be simpler than trying to fight with Plex.

What app can be used to accomplish this? I have a Samsung phone (S20 fe) if that helps, but I'd rather not use something Samsung specific in case my next phone isn't a Samsung. Thanks!

Samsung P580 won't update OS, can I force it to update without rooting?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 07:25 AM PST

    Hello all,

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A w/S Pen from 2016 (P580) running Android 6.0.1. It still runs well, but I'd really like to update to the next Android OS. For whatever reason, when I try to find updates, the device says that it's up to date. My mom also has the exact same tablet and hers is actually running a slightly newer version of Android.

The easy fix would be to root it, but I don't want to risk bricking a perfectly functioning tablet. Is there a way I can force an update without any rooting?

    Thanks

    Video streaming pauses

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 06:40 AM PST

Hey, I have a 1+6t, when I stream videos on any browser, it pauses the video every couple of seconds, it's not a buffering issue. It can be improved by restarting the phone or clearing the cache (less effective).

Phone is about 2 years old, was thinking of getting a new one but would hold off another while if I can fix this issue, any ideas?

Need help figuring out how to install a custom rom.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 06:18 AM PST

So I have galaxy a20. I already unlocked the bootloader and booted twrp and magisk. But can't seem to find a rom that would install properly. Don't wanna brick my phone just winging it so trying to gather more information. But it's overwhelming, how much much info there is on so many different things.

I just want to install a clean rom with long term stability. Doesn't have to be customized.

Can anybody help? What rom should I install and how do I do it. The instructions at xda are hella confusing. Like this one page it says to install cdroid but to do that have to install ultimate Q and the whole thing would work if magisk is 19.3 but going to the ultimate Q's page there's no link for ultimate Q the one there is, it says magisk 20.3 is already in it.

Someone with some knowledge please help out a newbie.

    TIA.
