2021 /r/AndroidDev plans, and a call for new moderator applications!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:54 AM PST

    Hey all!

You might only recognize my name from the AMA spree 18 months ago (if at all), but I've actually been head mod here for a year or so. I firmly believe in staying "in the background", but I think the sub would benefit from more openness.

In 2021 I'm hoping to bring /r/AndroidDev back to its roots; being one of the best places for Android development news / discussion. There's 4 steps to this, that I reckon can be sorted in early 2021:

    Step 1 (Now!): New moderators

Without being too revealing, most of the mod actions in the last 3 months have been mine. Obviously everyone's modding interest comes and goes, and all the mods do help. However the workload should be distributed across multiple people / timezones, posts shouldn't be waiting days to be removed!

    Step 2 (Dec/Jan): Rule revision

There were fairly significant rule changes earlier in the year, and I think most of them were for the better. Now we've all had time to judge them, I'd like to initiate a much more community led discussion / vote of rule changes.

    Step 3 (Jan/Feb): Automation & optimisation

There are quite a few manual mod actions that can be pretty easily automated. This could be automatically posting important Android dev news, detecting spam faster, and generally leaning towards automated rule enforcement. There's also things like CSS tweaks, wiki tidying, flair options etc that can be improved.

Step 4 (March): Promotion & feedback

This step is a bit up in the air, but I'll be trying to get more AMAs / partnerships with dev ecosystems like Google & Gradle that have reached out before. Similarly, I'll be talking to more companies like Reddit / TomTom / Bumble to share their development processes / solutions. Hopefully knowing how "big league" companies do things will help!

So, as part of Step 1, please leave a comment (preferred), DM me, or send a modmail with your application to become a moderator. I'm not expecting crazy 5hr/day dedication, just a willingness to help out a few times a week and spread the load! I'll be looking over all the applications in a week or two.

Ideally, let me know your timezone, Android experience, and any online community moderating experience.

Thanks, and please let me know any feedback to my super vague 4 step plan, listening to the community is one of the main focuses!

tl;dr: /r/AndroidDev 2021 is gonna be good, if you want to help let me know!

    Cracked apks?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:16 AM PST

Anyone wondering how cracked apks works? i will give an example : Spotify it has a lot of annoying ads and skip limit and all that stuff i came across revdl.com which offers a cracked apk with all premium features unlocked without any ads and all stuff except the downloading feature which can't be cracked as it is a side-server you can't get the files unless you crack spotify servers my question is how did they manage to do this me as a developer i use a de-compile protection which protect my app from decomilation to get the source code for sure it works and obviously spotify source code isn't cracked then how did they manage to edit the source code to remove ads with the protection also i read somewhere that it is done by editing the manifest file in the apk which i think its impossible as far as i know its used in the UI stuff like theming and icons and scaling no real code in it anyway any answer is appreciated

    RecyclerView optimization using RecycledViewPool

Wise people of Reddit, I need your help!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:10 AM PST

I'm currently developing an android app, which has Home Screen. In order to navigate between the different screens I have a home button at the top-right corner of the phone. But, and here is the question, do you think that the home button is necessary? Or the user should just go back until he reaches the Home Screen.

How to achieve that kind of view(connecting grid item vertically, horizontally while swiping) without using any game engine?

Which is better for developing an editing image app Java 0r Flutter?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:14 AM PST

    Hello Android community,

I want to make a photo-editing app that performs functions such as (Crop - add Text - filters - add stickers, etc.) and I am a little confused.

What is the best language to making this app, Dart with Flutter or Kotlen/Java ? Why?

What are the possible reasons my app has a massive uninstall rate?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:02 AM PST

It's got an install rate of 705, an uninstall rate of 676, and 143 active devices.

I asked another sub if they could help out by installing my app and seeing what the problem is but instead I got downvoted and was told my app was probably just bad. Don't know why this question gets people angry. All I'm looking for is some feedback to know why I have such a large uninstall rate like perhaps something is malfunctioning, or the UI is off-putting. If this question gets you angry please don't downvote, just ignore and move on.

I've been using Adobe XD for a while for designing elements within the app although had to switch to linux to learn ROM Development, dual booting was never an option. What are by far the best alternates for XD on linux

Android Custom View: Extending The Views

    choose a development phone

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 01:43 AM PST

Which Android phone would you recommend as a development device for a network security-related SDK that does not care about the camera, ML, and targets the widest range of clients?

Most work has been performed in emulator, but we must see that it works well on a real device, also we will occasionally install the client apps that use our SDK, in case they want our guidance or, God forbid, help debugging their integration.

Need suggestions about Facebook Audience Network

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 04:09 PM PST

Facebook audience network is one of the worst ad networks in the world. Their support is also the most useless support. I was monetizing 14 apps through it and on 13th of september ecpm for one of my apps was more than 500$ and their bots blocked traffic for all of my apps. I appealed for 2 apps and none of the appeal hasn't been answered yet and they have put my payment on hold which is more than 4500$ and I am making nothing from my apps.

And cherry on top is, there is a bug in their system which does not allow me to contact their support. Any suggestions what should I do?

I migrated to audience network from admob because I received ad serving limited notification and from that day my apps which used to make more than 100$ a day are receiving not more than even 5$.

Currently I am monetizing my apps through mopub only and mopub only makes around 9$ everyday for me, I haven't yet received any payment from mopub yet.

Past few months have been really tough for me, I have even spent my savings, please guide me what should I do?

How much income can I expect from AdMob?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:26 AM PST

I've got an ad-free (and just free) application on Play Store. I am planning to monetize my app through AdMob. I am curios how much income can I expect from this? And how it will affect my KPI. That's I don't want to loose much users and reduce my downloadings (currently my app is absolutely free). Can you please share you experience on this? Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.
