    Weekly "anything goes" thread!

    Here's your chance to talk about whatever!

    Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread.

    Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed.

    Is anyone else getting tired of Android Studio & Gradle performance?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:38 AM PDT

    I just ran my unit tests through the terminal, it took 6 mins. (~30 smaller modules so guess I'll have to live with that)

    Before that I was typing in Android Studio and the autocomplete was struggling to come up with something within 3 seconds. The Android Studio task is taking around 200% of my CPU when I start typing, according to activity monitor. It lies steadily at 4GB of ram + some java processes together taking another 5GB. I'm currently at 14,3 out of 16 GB of ram, with 2GB in the swap, no emulator only 5 chrome tabs, slack, and spotify open.

    I've got a Macbook Pro 2018, pretty maxed out with 2,7 GHz quad-core i7, 16GB ram. Do I have to throw this out and get the 16 inch, i9 & 64GB? I don't even want a bigger computer.

    Anyways, I had to write down my frustration. Is someone else experiencing this or am I going mad?

    Reddit android app : what pattern is used to navigate/open their "modals" on top of the rest of the UI ?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 06:00 AM PDT

    I am Using Android architecture patterns with : Navigation Graph, NavHost in a very basic / standard way

    Currently I have one activity, with inside its layout :

    - Material AppBarLayout + Toolbar

    - NavHostFragment

    Then obviously, I have a few different fragment that I navigateTo and their content gets replaced under my toolbar.

    All standard for now, but now how can I navigate to a fragment like it is done in Reddit App when :

    - clicking on the Search icon

    - clicking on any post to see it

    ? It seems like a popup/modal that take all screen space and having its own back button.

    Tried BottomSheemDialogFragment without success.
    Is it a new activity with another dedicated NavHostFragment ? :'(

    gif of the areddit app showing what I mean : https://gfycat.com/fr/bouncyfalseeidolonhelvum

    Thanks for the help

    Non-dev here. Is it possible to interact with another app's activity when it isn't in the foreground?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 06:46 AM PDT

    Disclaimer: I am not a developer, my apologies for the noobness.

    Let's say I have app named "Primary" with one view that displays 4 buttons, some prompt for user input and some are just a toggle type of action. Is it possible for another app, "Secondary", to press those buttons programmatically, and provide input when needed, while Primary is not in the foreground?

    The only methods I've found online so far are using ADB but that requires the app to be in foreground and using coordinates on the screen or shell input.

    Am trying to solve a problem at work on my own and figured before I sink any more time I'd ask whether it's even possible to do.

    Thanks!

    Why is it mandatory to upload 7-inch tablet screenshots to Play Console?

    Is this a new requirement? I'm trying to publish a game designed for mobile phones, but they're forcing me to include screenshots for a "7-inch tablet"..

    Tapatalk alternative

    Is it really that hard to make alternative to Tapatalk?

    I think this app really needs alternative, and I think there is HUGE demand for it, so just to ask here, is it really that hard to make it?

    Status bar.

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 04:40 AM PDT

    Hi, i wish to add an actively updated piece of system information to my status bar, but i can't figure out where the functionality for this is. What i want to add is along the lines of the battery percentage, but all i can find is how to change colors and dimming. Any idea on how to add custom system information to the status bar?

    Tried uploading a new APK to production but can't upload on the new Play Console. But I switched to classic Google Play Console and was successfully able to upload.

    Anybody experienced the same issue? And how do I resolve it in the future? I am using Safari by the way.

    Update to Android Studio 4.1 caused lagging!

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 02:59 PM PDT

    The UI is choppy when scrolling and highlighting is taking forever to update.

    Is there a fix to this? My specs are fine according to task manager, so it is definitely a problem with the update.

    Edit:

    I followed this guide to increase speed: https://medium.com/@Albert348/is-your-android-studio-too-slow-4baae2d0f32c

    I can go several hours without it lagging now. It does appear to start lagging, but I'm not certain yet, if it is transient or not.

    Making your own Dialog Fragment/Alert/Popup/Whatever you call this.

    Making your own Dialog Fragment/Alert/Popup/Whatever you call this.

    Could anyone identity what this popup-thing is and how to make one? Just a simple one that shows a TextView or something. The Android docs aren't really helping that much and a lot of the tutorials are telling me to use 3rd party libraries, but I know that's unnecessary for something so little. Thanks in advance.

    Is the Jetpack Compose is just a Wrapper for XML based Layouts and Views in Android or a parallel UI ?

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 11:09 AM PDT

    I am curious about new Jetpack Compose . But my doubt is ,

    Is this a new parallel UI library OR just a wrapper for XML based layout building ?

    For example , consider this compose ...

    Text(
    "A day wandering through the sandhills ",
    maxLines = 2,
    overflow = TextOverflow.Ellipsis)

    Now my query is , does this got converted to something like this ...

    val txt: TextView = TextView(context)

    txt.text = "A day wandering through the sandhills "

    txt.setMaxLines(2);

    txt.setEllipsize(TextUtils.TruncateAt.END);

    OR no conversion (a parallel lib...).

    I'm finding it frustrating to find a decent guide on developing with prebuilt C/C++ binary files using NDK.

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 08:52 AM PDT

    I am sorta new to Android Dev but overall I have found a lot of support online for learning and understanding. That was until I started to look into implementing native C/C++ programs.

    I love using the iperf tool on my command line and want to see if I could implement that into my own app. My first thought was just using a runtime process exec() but I wanted to see if there were better solutions. I found about android NDK, so I took that route. iperf has prebuilt binaries, which for some reason, someone thought was a good idea to put a period in the file name, so the raw file download is messed up (problem for later). They specify the android and NDK version to use, so I was still optimistic.

    I like project guides that are linear and explain how to set a project up and what certain aspects mean. It teaches me at least one way to get started and I can then change/adjust it. That does not seem to exist with NDK.

    Everything is just there online, no page to start with, just every documentation piece that's relevant. I create the project with the C++ template, and then could not even find any sort of help of what to do to start. Android documentation mentions all these different things about ABIs, using JNDI, what to put in the CMAKE file, editing Android.mk, and a lib directory I can't even find but not even sure if I'm supposed to make it. They all just assume I set those up already. Clearly I am missing something about all this.

    end rant
