Intresting take on charging battery to 100%

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:47 PM PDT

I saw a comment in eli5 sub that talks about charging a battery to 100, thought I wanted to share here where most people advice to charge between 20-80%

Nothing charges to 100 since 2015. What you read as 100 is actually slightly below the batter's rated voltage for exactly that reason. Charge to a hundred all you want. Leave it on the charge cable, the engineers know what they're doing

Edit: Yes, naysayers. Your opinion is noted, stop sending me threatening messages. Follow the sources, Wikipedia is actually right you'll find; anything that says I am wrong is generally, at a minimum, 8 years old. This sort of technology does not stagnate and if you can't be bothered to stay informed, stop spreading your bullshit.

Kiwi Browser gets its first update in months, now based on Chromium v85

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 04:43 AM PDT

Changelog taken from Kiwi's page in the Play Store:

This version has improved stability and resolves some issues that were reported lately (notably with the anti-AMP filter, or with hcaptcha that you can find on many Cloudflare-powered websites).

I'm reading all the reviews here, and plan to make another update with additional fixes based on it.

Keep in mind that Kiwi is free to use, and fully open-source. If there is a functionality that you want, you can also ask your developer friends for help.

I'll do my best as well.

    Enjoy Kiwi!

It doesn't seem to be widely available yet (only 1 of my 3 Android devices has it right now), but at least it proves that the project is still alive and there is more to come in the future.

Screen Ratios - 20:9??? Bring back the "GIRTH"!!!

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:22 PM PDT

Hi all, long time Android user and have always edged on the side of bigger phones/screens ever since the days of the Samsung Note 2 (or II to be precise!).

My question/discussion/topic is not necessarily about screen size, or screen to body ratio but more about screen width (when holding the device in portrait).

Over the last 10 years or so I've jumped around devices (every 4-6 months approx) but what stands out is the devices I've gone back to, I've owned various Note 4's & Mate 9's, and I'm now on my 3rd Mate 20 (non-pro of course). I've also owned a Mate 10, Oneplus 7 Pro and Note 8/9/10+'s too.

So... the commonality here is the big WIDE screens, which I love and of course generally fit video content much better.

I recently bought a Poco F2 Pro with an idea of finally leaving Huawei and moving on from Mates/expensive Notes, but I immediately put it up for sale due to the screen being too "narrow" at 20:9.

Does anybody care about screen width anymore? I certainly do, not just for videos but for general day to day use (gaming, reading emails, web browsing etc).

I know there have been trends in the smartphone industry that are not necessarily popular (non-removable batteries & the disappearing headphone jack come to mind) but screen "shape" is way more important to me.

This is my first post to Reddit so go steady folks, not even sure if it's in the right category! Just really interested to hear people's thoughts on this...

Get the new Google Pay UI now

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:33 PM PDT

I've found a way to (almost always) get the new Pay UI now.

It might require multiple attempts, but it's worked for a few people now.

    1. Uninstall Pay
    2. Head here: https://myaccount.google.com/deleteservices
    3. Delete Google Pay from your account
    4. Reinstall Pay
    5. Tada!

Google Assistant: Still unable to report air quality on its own.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 01:38 PM PDT

We've had 3 really bad summers/falls of wildfires in California now and we're entering our fourth consecutive year. One thing I have noticed is throughout the years, Assistant struggles with displaying air quality.

Today I tested Siri vs. Alexa vs Assistant and here are the results:

    • Siri & Alexa: No issues at all.
    • Google Assistant: Asks you to connect to a 3rd party app which must be fed a location and cannot use your current location. This is a marginal improvement over 2019 where you would just be fed the definition of air quality. It makes me wonder. Do Google engineers ever step out the door or look out the window? Is it maybe because Apple's history of having to send engineers to China so much that they are familiar with air quality?

What's also interesting is the stock weather app on iOS shows air quality, whereas it is not shown in the Android weather card. I also distinctly remember Series 4 Watch having a face that shows AQI.

As much as I love Google Assistant, and how much it can generally do, there's just a few mind boggling things it simply cannot.
