How to know if YouTube is playing a video in HDR?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 12:43 AM PDT

We just bought a TCL 50" P8M, and it has certification for HDR10. How can we know if the video playing in YouTube is in HDR? In my phone (that can display HDR), it would say HDR next to the video quality. In the TV, there's only the quality and no HDR next to it. The picture preset is set to Smart HDR.

    Best Android TV today?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 08:40 AM PDT

Well, my Fire TV shit the fan a few weeks ago (stutter, glitch lines in the screen, random reboots), so I'm in the market for a new Android TV.

What's the best one around today? Is there any upcoming device I should wait for?

    Thanks for any replies!

How to transfer files to shared internal storage usb device?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:07 AM PDT

Hello, I have an android 9 tv, where I already plugged a sandisk ultra fit usb and reformatted it into shared internal storage. When I use x-plore app, it doesn't detect the storage device. Is there any other way to transfer files without having to use dropbox and the like?

Update: Oh, I see that I have to select the usb device under Storage, & set it to "Migrate data to this storage". Then x-plore can detect it and I can now transfer files to it. :)

Run Shell Script at boot without root?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:29 PM PDT

I recently installed button mapper and was able to remap the four colored buttons to individual hdmi inputs. However, to do so you have to run a shell script via adb each time the tv reboots. I didn't know if android had a Linux rc equivalent to place the shell script without requiring root so it starts with each boot automatically. Thanks!

[CUH-ZT1H] Finally managed to connect DS4 to ATV 9 (Pie) but DS4 doesn't responds while I can connect it like a charm on my Huawei P Smart 2019 (Android 9 Pie). Android TV what the hell?! The point of ATV is to watch Netflix, YT, HBO and to use gamepads for gaming.

Creating a daydream screensaver from a website for Android TV

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 06:11 PM PDT

I live fairly close to a train station and I would like my Mi Box to show a live feed of the next trains when it would otherwise show the screensaver. Does anyone have experience with this?

Ideally I'd want it to use a website like this. Thanks in advance.

    Android TV Home app corrupt?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 04:27 PM PDT

    Hi all!

I'm having a bit of a weird issue with my Philips Android TV. Basically what's happening is that the default launcher (android tv launcher) keeps crashing (or at least that's what it looks like to me).

I believe this is related to Google's Movie & TV app as I'm able to interact with all other channels in the homepage (add/remove) but everytime I click on the movie&tv channel the laucher crashes every single time.

Another thing is that for the other channels (youtube mainly), as I've just mentioned I can add/remove them, but they simply do not refresh with new recommendations or update my subscriptions. They have been showing the same results for about a month now.

Couple of things I've already tried:

    1. Cleared data on both Android TV Home and movie & tv apps. No change.
    2. I've already wiped all and re-installed the TV (factory reset), but the behaviour stays the same and my channels in the launcher itself don't refresh or reload and stay the same as they were before the wipe.
    3. Tried disabling the movies & tv app, and despite it desapearing from my app drawer (OK!), the channel still shows on the home screen (NOK!)
    4. Connected to the TV's terminal using ADB over wifi and removed the movie & tv app. Although the app is removed, the channel still shows on my home screen and if I try to remove it the launcher crashes (same as before), but if I try to open it says the app is not found (guess that is expected!)
    5. After removing the movie & tv app, since the issue was still present I went on and removed the android tv home app and reinstalled it via ADB. Lo and behold, I'm presented with the exact same home screen as before with the movies & tv channel still present. Even if I clear the data for the app.

This is driving me mad I can't seem to find a way to resolve this.

Anyone had this same issue before? I googled for people with the same issue but all I could find were people that resolved their problem with #1, #4 or a mix of both.

The only reason why I haven't put a screwdriver through the screen yet is because my wife and my daughters are the main users of the TV and I wouldn't even dare to interrup their netflix binge for any reason. This is starting to drive me mad.

Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts you can spare.

    Cheers.

(PS: while I sit here writing this post down, the home screen has crashed at least a dozen times)

    Peacock at a glance

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I signed up for the advert free premium tier. Still get adverts for content. Went to play NBC Nightly news, shows a segment from the weekend. :( Didn't dive deep into other content offerings but looks good at quick glance. Here is a link if you have trouble installing the app:

    Update:

Here is a positive review from Gizmodo. They say there are some old but very popular series that are worth watching like Law and Order, parks and rec, etc... I never watched those.

PSA: Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital conversion is NOT available in the New Mi TV Stick

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 11:53 AM PDT

While watching some videos on YouTube I found out the Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital conversion is not available, otherwise the "5.1" logo on Netflix would be always visible (like the Nvidia Shield 2019), it only supports Dolby Digital Plus passthrough unfortunately.

It can't compete with the Fire TV Stick in that regard, so let's see if the new Chromecast device stacks up.
