    r/android reviews: Samsung Galaxy line.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 11:09 AM PDT

Device reviews are everywhere these days. From big name technology websites to lesser known blogs, and to the rising stars on YouTube. You can find hours upon hours of review content on most any well-known device out there. However a lot of these places do not focus on long term usage and fail to mention how devices hold up over the long term.

Additionally for those of you who like to hear about devices from actual users, it's hard to find a good place with reviews that aren't scattered all over the place.

This thread is where you, the /r/android community, can share your experiences with your device. Hopefully users who read this thread can gain some valuable insight into a device they're researching to see if they want to buy it. This week we are focusing on the Samsung Galaxy line of of devices.

Samsung are the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world by shipments according to Counterpoint. Samsung's phones have been praised for their innovative hardware and software features with a lot of industry firsts and have arguably been as important as Google in making Android the most widely used smartphone operating system in the world.

    Past threads:

    Rules:

Please leave a top comment only if you own a Samsung Galaxy device running the Android operating system. Anyone in violation of this rule will have their comment removed. Any feedback should be directed to modmail.

    1) Please specify if the device was purchased yourself or obtained from the company or a third party as a review device or a gift.

    2) What device do/did you own?

    3) What were your initial impressions of the device?

    4) How did your impressions change over time? If you currently own the device, how do you feel about it now?

    5) Feel free to talk about anything else you would like (eg. sensors, software, customizability, strength of the custom ROM scene, etc.). Remember, reviews are personal, so emphasize the things you feel are important! If you love or hate something about your device, let it be known!

The android website is neglected quite a bit.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 05:56 AM PDT

So, the phones and tablets section android website, until July 13, 2020 showed previous generation phones (Galaxy S10 5G, Mi Mix 3 5G, etc) in the 5G phones section, and for camera phones it showed Moto G7, OnePlus 6T (2018), and ofcourse Pixel 4. While Google is always quick to include the latest of the Pixel series on android's official website, they don't do the same for other OEMs.

Oh and then there's the 'Android is for Everyone' section that hasn't been updated (or taken down) since 2016, and still shows the Galaxy S7 series and Mi Note 3.

It's only fair that Google put a little more effort into the main website for all things android.

(Edit : Looks like the featured brands section still has thumbnails of older gen phones, along with the Pixel 4 ofcourse)

Inconsistent Nav Bar across Google apps

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 10:28 AM PDT

The bottom nav bars across android app's are very inconsistent.

Here is a link to a compilation of a few apps: Image

Here are the few things that I think are inconsistent:

    • Dark mode Colors: The colors across apps are really different

    Apps RGB Color Code
    Files Go 53,54,57
    Drive 54,55,58
    Pay 54,55,58
    News 49,50,53
    Play Store 32,33,36
    Voice 54,55,58
    Dialer 32,33,36
    Fit 54,55,58
    Photos 45,46,48
    Podcasts 32,33,36
    YT Music 29,29,29
    YouTube 40,40,40
    Maps 255,255,255
    Discover 48,49,52
    Clock 54,55,58

    • Inconsistent Icons : The icons for home and Explore are different across apps

    • Text in the nav bar: Some apps have text for all icons, some only for selected icons and no text for some

    • Animated Icons : The icons in Google Fit are animated, Play store icons have a fill type animation, but these are not found in other apps

    • Bottom Pill transparency - Even after a year , most google apps have not been optimized.

What do you think about Huawei's response to Trump's ban (HMS and so on)?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 10:36 AM PDT

After Trump's ban, Huawei is trying to maintain it's customer base through initiatives like the HMS and App Gallery, but I would never buy one at this stage. Could they have done something better? Would you still buy their products, regardless of the alleged complicity with the Chinese government?

Sunday Rant/Rage (Jul 19 2020) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 04:12 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.
