/r/android reviews: Huawei and Honor line.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 06:00 AM PDT

Device reviews are everywhere these days. From big name technology websites to lesser known blogs, and to the rising stars on YouTube. You can find hours upon hours of review content on most any well-known device out there. However a lot of these places do not focus on long term usage and fail to mention how devices hold up over the long term.

Additionally for those of you who like to hear about devices from actual users, it's hard to find a good place with reviews that aren't scattered all over the place.

This thread is where you, the /r/android community, can share your experiences with your device. Hopefully users who read this thread can gain some valuable insight into a device they're researching to see if they want to buy it. This week we are focusing on the Huawei and Honor of devices.

Huawei and Honor are the second largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world by shipments according to Counterpoint. Huawei's phones have been praised for their camera performance and innovative hardware. Honor is Huawei's online centric brand which brings similar hardware(with some downgrades) for a lower price. Lately Huawei and Honor have had trouble outside China since they have lost access to Google Mobile Services so they cannot launch new phones with Google Apps and the Play Store.

    Past threads:

    Rules:

Please leave a top comment only if you own a Huawei or Honor device running the Android operating system. Political comments will NOT be tolerated and may result in a ban. Anyone in violation of this rule will have their comment removed. Any feedback should be directed to modmail.

    1) Please specify if the device was purchased yourself or obtained from the company or a third party as a review device or a gift.

    2) What device do/did you own?

    3) What were your initial impressions of the device?

    4) How did your impressions change over time? If you currently own the device, how do you feel about it now?

    5) Feel free to talk about anything else you would like (eg. sensors, software, customizability, strength of the custom ROM scene, etc.). Remember, reviews are personal, so emphasize the things you feel are important! If you love or hate something about your device, let it be known!

Am I the only one who misses the lock animation?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 04:21 AM PDT

In the old times when I used to push the lock button (or the screen timed out) the screen would turn off like a CRT monitor in the older versions of android like the below videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zFwpb_LDHQ
but nowadays it's just subtle animation. it just feels very plain!

Edit: Guys I found an app that does exactly this. Its called screen off and lock. It will emulate the CRT animation.

Sunday Rant/Rage (Jul 12 2020) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 04:12 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Do you think we'll ever see subscription based or purchasable GSIs on Android?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:33 AM PDT

This thought came to me while discussing the Pixel 4\4a(5G)\5 with friends this weekend.
Do you think we're getting close to a point where Google\Samsung\LG\Sony\etc could start offering a GSI (for a price) which could be flashed to any (fully Treble compatible) phone?
It would give people more freedom to purchase hardware based on personal requirements and also get the software experience we lean towards?

Personally I think its what google could possibly be pushing for long term with all the requirements they're setting out with project treble with each major Android release. Either a bare bones Android GSI with the google play framework to flash on phones no longer getting software updates. Or a premium Pixel GSI which would essentially turn any phone into a pixel device.

Hardware advancements aren't going to get much better over the next few years so it makes sense from a business standpoint to focus on the software side. (Correct me if im wrong) but i'm also pretty sure that the functionality is present in the play store to be able to install GSIs as well?

How would people feel about when they got a new Android phone and booted it for the first time they got an option to choose the OS flavour? For Example:

    • Google Pixel
    • Samsung (with the KNOX API for better large busiess MDM control)
    • Microsoft (for tighter integration into the Office365 Service stack)
    • Sony (integration with Playstation services)
    • 3rd party GSI

Id love a choice like this going forward but on the flip side it could easily decend into complete chaos, be open for abuse by bigger players by charging no less for a device and then again on top for the OS for example.
Interested to hear peoples thoughts on this as ive not seen it discussed anywhere up until now.
