| Weekly Questions Thread - July 20, 2020 Posted: 20 Jul 2020 03:56 AM PDT This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, our Discord, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:
Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged. Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead. Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail! Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. | JetBrains is porting Compose to desktop and other platforms Posted: 19 Jul 2020 10:27 PM PDT It's no news that JetBrains employees are working on Compose. But this job offer: https://www.jetbrains.com/careers/jobs/ui-framework-developer-401/ makes it clear what the goal is - "Our team is working to port it to desktop and other platforms.". | I have some queries about real time database for my app. Posted: 20 Jul 2020 07:09 AM PDT Hello, /r/androiddev I recently received a project from a friend of mine. The app is basically a marketplace app where people can buy/sell stuff. I never worked on big apps like these luckily i have another friend who is also an app developer who i am going to work with. That being said, I'm a noob when it comes to database related stuff. I did use Firebase for storing images, login credentials for a personal project but other than that nothing else. I don't know what i need and its confusing to get the pricing right. Can anybody guide me in the right way? [link] [comments]
| Beagle debug menu library v2 + showcase app Posted: 20 Jul 2020 12:34 AM PDT This debug menu library has been rewritten from scratch to support more ways to display its UI (side drawer, bottom sheet, dialog, etc), custom modules, easier integration and a simpler API. I'm still actively testing it (that's the reason for the beta tag) but I'm not aware of any blockers at the moment so I'm very much looking forward to see what you think about it! I've also created a showcase app to convince you that you need it in your project, and it also acts as a tutorial for implementing the different features. The source code for the app, as well as the library itself can be found in this GitHub repo. Without going into details about what can be done with the various modules: one of my main goals was to make this as simple to use as possible, and based on the feedback I got from colleagues as well as QA people working on projects where Beagle is used, it's well worth the 5-10 minutes it takes to add it to the apps. Let me know if you have any questions / issues / ideas to make it better :) [link] [comments] | ||
| Posted: 20 Jul 2020 08:21 AM PDT I have some custom hardware running an Andriod app(100s of miles away) and I was wondering if anyone knew of any remote ADB tools that'd allow me to run ADB commands from my computer? Looking to debug and potentially modify the device from afar. Thanks! [link] [comments] | ||
| [Noob ask] Recommend me "Site to App generator" that complies with G Play policies Posted: 20 Jul 2020 07:13 AM PDT Hey folks, I have an app which purpose is to mirror my site, I generated it from some "site to app" generator. I just got a mail from the Play Store that my app is not compliant with their policies. The app is not compliant with "the version of Vungle SDK which contains code to download install applications from unknown source outside of Google Play". Obviously, I'll need to get a new app. Can you please recommend me some "site to app" generator which complies with the Google Play policies. [link] [comments] | ||

| Exoplayer not work in huawei devices containing Huawei Mobile Services Posted: 20 Jul 2020 05:02 AM PDT In my huawei test device which contains huawei mobile services, exoplayer does not work both audio and video files. Do you know why? Does exoplayer not support devices including hms? [link] [comments] | ||
| What are the ways to read SMS and sub-second latencies? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 04:43 AM PDT I am making an app that reads users SMS and sends them to a secure server and then notifies about some actions on a web-portal. This complete flow is striving to do this in 4-5 seconds since the SMS is received. I want to discuss what are the pain points I can anticipate and if possible, how I can mitigate them. There are a couple on the top of my head:
Can there be more pain points that I am not considering at this moment? Any tips on how to take care of those. [link] [comments]

| Distributing android app outside of play store possible with app signing enabled for Google Play? Posted: 19 Jul 2020 04:37 PM PDT 0 I have an android app that is currently being distributed through google play store. Google upcoming deadline requires that apps must target API level 29 or I won't be able to update app after 2nd November 2020. I can not change targetSdkVersion My plan was to acquire new installs via Google Play Store and then update the app later from my own server or somewhere else. But I have opted for App signing for Google Play which resigns the APKs before redistributing them to users. My Second Plan was to upload the APK to play store and not publish there and download the signed APK and distribute that from outside. Assuming google play will let me upload the APK after 2 November 2020. To test it out I changed targetSdkVersion I am wondering if there is a way to distribute app updates to the existing user outside of Google Play store. [link] [comments] | ||

| S-Pen 10 Lite - How do I read the distance from screen, pen angle, pen orientation and pressure? Posted: 19 Jul 2020 09:21 PM PDT I found this, that suggests back in 2012 that a new API exposed the orientation/angle and distance from the screen.... https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557601 Stylusis from a Dev in Australia can read the pen's orientation and angle to the screen, but no sign of the distance... unfortunately the dev doesn't explain the AIP function's they're using: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ideamats.pentest I've looked for a while, and only see examples of X/Y coordinate reading. What's the functions for: 1: Distance from the screen 2: Pen/screen orientation (angle the flat pen's pointing if laid flat on the screen) 3: Pen angle (from straight out of the screen) 4: Pen action-button Imagine the GAMES, and cool effects we could use! I notice an Adobe Sketch program uses the pressure effect, and pen angle, but doesn't use the pen orientation for wide pen nibs yet... [link] [comments] | ||
